1393.0. "Tyson vs. JC Snead ???" by DPDMAI::VENEZIO (never drink SLICE while golfing) Thu Nov 07 1991 09:47

It seems that JC Snead may be a formidable opponent for Mike Tyson or
    E. Holyfield. This conclusion is based on a recent fist-a-cuff with
fellow senior tour player Mike Hill.

It appears JC and Mike Hill (of Alro Steel fame) got into it on the
driving range at the Silverado CC in front of 3000 spectators watching
    a clinic.

As the story goes, Mike Hill had gone to the opposite end of the range
to practice long shots. JC was also hitting long shots toward Hill and
the shots were getting very close to one anothers spot. A P.O.ed Mike
Hill walked the length of the driving range and swung a club over the
head of JC. JC raised his 1 iron to block the shot. The force was
strong enough to snap the shaft on JC's club. The two wrestled to the
ground and JC (50 pounds heavier and a few inches taller) pinned Hill
with a knee to the throat. Players and officials had to separate them.
According to several witnesses, Hill yelled "I'm going to pay $4500 to
    have you shot"

Hill suffered a bruised cheek and a cut left forearm. Hill expects to
    be fined.

Of course JC has a reputation for being just plain miserable. There was
an incident years ago where a Pro-Am partner of JC's slammed a short
putt off the green because Snead would have made money if he had made
    it.

This is the kind of stuff the Tour doesn't need. With a sterling
reputation of gentlemanness over all the years, the Tour will probably
come down hard on Hill and Snead. It will be interesting to see what
    action Deane takes.

In a separate incident, Seniors Jerry Barber and Mike Fetchick got into
a shoving match in the locker room. Barber was apparently shoved into a
    sofa.

There is a preliminary report Don "Hairball" King is talking to both
    Fetchick and Snead.

I was at p.v. one year when j.c just finished the
15th with a bogey and then a kindly old man in his 60's had
the nerve to ask j.c for his autograph. Well mr. snead just
bit his head right off.
J.C. is without doubt the my least liked pga player.

    Worse liked than Hale Irvin?????????????????????

I see that Bruce Devlin has trouble getting practice area space, so the
same will be the case with J.C.! These old pros have a way of
    punishing people like J.C..

1393.3A few tarnished halos?VERGA::F_MCGOWANFri Nov 08 1991 12:5313
I guess Jesse (J.C.) has been raising quite a ruckus - made some
remarks shortly after joining the senior tour about how most of the
guys just complained about everything all the time, nobody seemed to be
having fun, etc. I'm sure this didn't sit too well with the others.

As for Jerry Barber...I've seen him in action at the Digital Senior
event, and he is a most unpleasant man. Whoever caddies for him really
earns his/her pay. I also saw him displaying rudeness to his fellow
competitors by carrying on a loud conversation adjacent to the first
tee, as a group was preparing to tee off. One of them had to ask him to
knock it off. I guess they can't all be angels.

1393.4it's THORPE vs TYSONUSEM::VOUTSELASMon Nov 11 1991 11:4023

As far as Tyson goes , the guy the could take ANYONE
    is Jim Thorpe.
Several years ago at PV, I had the chance to talk to him
while he was hitting sand shots in the practise area.

He said he could have gone into the pro game since he never lost
a bout in amatuer boxing contests, and had many knockouts.

In fact he said at the time he would love to meet "Marvelous
Marvin Hagler" for a few million!!

And looking at his build, I wouldn't doubt it!

JC is in the same "bigger than the game " mode as Hale ,
Bruce Devlin , Gary Player , Bruce Crampton ,and getting there
    Curtis Strange !

I scored for Mike Hill one year at the DEC classic and found him
real freindly and down to earth, no doubt in my mind who
    instigated this thing.

    I never lost a bout when I boxed amature....But that dosn't mean I had
the ability to turn pro. Pro is totally different.

>> In fact he said at the time he would love to meet "Marvelous
>> Marvin Hagler" for a few million!!

If I were to fight pro, I'd sure as hell like to start out with someone
who's at least 3 weight classes below me too. Jim Thorpe must weigh in
at about 220 or more. When Ali was fighting in his prime he only
    weighed 224.

      Mike,

My instincts tell me that a 160 pound pro boxer could still take
a 190 pound golf pro. I weigh in at 196 and Thorpe is not as" bulky"
as I am. Plus his arm reach is not in the same class as Hagler's.
My brother was Paris Island boxing champ at 2 levels,
so I say when you got "punch", you got punch!
His arm reach and arm "bulk" was that like Popeye's!!
But only weighed at the time 140-146 ??

But your right, big difference between pro and "amatuer".
It's like me playing the 120th guy on the PGA money list.
Even with a stroke a hole, he's going to win! So would Hagler.

I'll call Don King and set you up with my brother!!

    Ang,

I never said that Hagler wouldnt' kill him. But he'll have a much
easier time beating him, then Tyson (which is the weight class he
    should be fighting in).

As for fighting your brother, well I haven't done any boxing in over 15
years. And I'm now 1 amature or 2 pro weight classes heavier. Ask me this
15 years ago, and I would have accepted.

Kind of on the subject (arguments,etc...)

In Golf Digest - Paul Azinger was quoted as saying "Johnny
Miller is the biggest moron in the booth".

He then says he was misquoted - "No, what I said was... Johnny
Miller is the biggest Mormon in the booth".

    	Pretty funny

1393.10Dave Hill not Mike HillFLAMES::THRASHERMon Nov 18 1991 10:365
I just read a recent blurb in one of the golf rags that it was Dave
Hill, not Mike Hill, that got into it with J.C.. This makes more sense
since Dave Hill has been known to have a bad temper.

now that makes a LOT of a sense!!
          Two hot heads!
Plus Mike is bigger than Dave Hill, and JC wouldn't like that!
