1385.0. "Titleist being sued by Nevada Bob's" by DPDMAI::VENEZIO (never drink SLICE while golfing) Fri Oct 25 1991 10:44

There seems to be a law suit pending between Nevada Bob's and Acushnet
makers of Titleist balls. Nevada Bob's is suing Acushnet for alledged
price fixing on balls to the tune of $100M.

Nevada Bob's is the largest retailer of balls for Titleist and
according to Nevada Bob's founder Bob Elton, "Titleist has been price
fixing for 3 1/2 years and I tired of it"

Titleist retricts retailers from advertising balls at anything below
list price and selling for anything less than three dollars over cost.

Everyone speculates this is really a fight against on-course pro shops
    and off-course discounters.

How would you feel if you couldn't buy balata T's at your local
    discounter??

I'll keep you posted as I hear more. I read the story in Golf World.

    Interesting,

Because I know for a fact that Roger Dunnes has gotten around this by
selling "experienced" golf balls, Balata T's all boxed up like new for
around $10 dozen. Seems like the fight is on.

1385.2T's are poor 'scuse ballsAKOCOA::BREENBill Breen Ako2-3 244-7984Tue Oct 29 1991 16:0229
I am superbly qualified to answer this question because of my
    impartiality:

    	1. I consistently cut Titleist Balatas

    	2. I am extremely cheap; I can prove this

        3. Therefore, I would not be inclined to purchase the Ts from
either Bob's, Green Meadow or Vesper*

    QED

Aside from all that this seems to come down to any
manufacture/distributor stipulating what price its end-retailers can
sell at and being able to enforce contracts to that effect.

Personally, I generally buy balls from discounters and look for
sales etc; I have, of course, one very good reason not stated above
for avoiding T's and that is they are a very poor 'scuse ball. It just
doesn't fly to miss a shot and curse the ball manufacturer when playing
a Titleist Balata although I have used that scuse for most every other
ball, especially the x-outs which I buy specifically for that purpose.

Now that I think of it how about - "Damn, I didn't notice that I
had a cut on that Titleist I just hit, I should have stayed with the
    Pinnacles - wouldaputitrightonthegreeeen"
