Right! He won $1,000,000.00 and gave half to charity (according to the
Boston Globe). The tourney was won in a playoff between DA Wybring (SP?)
and McGee by McGee...

| calrification on the $1M
the way i read it, he won $1m, $500K for him and
$500K for charity of his choice. it was not his choice
to give to charity. it was the way the prize was structured.
he may be a benevolent guy but don't use the 1/2 mil as
an example

1381.5 | Al Did Win! | CXCAD::ARSENEAU | Tim Arseneau | Tue Oct 15 1991 07:59 | 4 |
| To answer the question about whether Al Geiberger won the tournament when
he shot the 59, on this Saturday's golf broadcast they said that he did
win. What was interesting was that Al won the tournament without shooting
any scores in the 60's (i.e. he shot 3 rounds in the 70's and his 59).

| Re: <<< Note 1381.6 by WMOIS::FLEMING_D >>>
Well, I guess everybody knows that this topic refers to the fact that
Chip Beck had a 59 at the tournament in Las Vegas this past weekend, but
his name hasn't been mentioned yet. And he didn't win the tournament (I
think he finished about 3 strokes back).

1381.8 | no practice round!! | LUDWIG::TREMBLAY | | Wed Oct 16 1991 00:36 | 9 |
| The amazing thing to me was that he never played a practice round on
the Sunset course. His caddy did all the legwork of scouting the
place out and it was the first time Beck ever played the course. Also,
even though Geiberger was on a more difficult course (Colonial), the
weather had been real wet and they were playing lift, clean and place.
Beck played the ball down all day which, to me, makes it a greater
feat.

1381.9 | Geiberger gets my vote | SIOG::OGRADY | | Wed Oct 16 1991 05:24 | 18 |
| Comparing the two scores is difficult.
Yes, the fact that Beck hadn't played the course before is astonishing.
Playing the ball as it lies is important. But I think Geiberger's round
was the greater because of several factors.
- The next best score that week was a 68. That makes a 9 shot gap which
must nearly be a record in itself for a pro tourney. I know for sure
that some 63's were shot on the course that Beck played on, if not
lower than that.
- The course that Geiberger shot his round was 7200+ yards. Beck's was
on a 6900+ course. The Geiberger feat was on a course which was rated
one of the toughest on tour that year despite the 59.
It's a mugs game trying to say which was better. Beck's achievement was
fantastic.

| Pardon my ignorance, but are y'all talking about the Senior Tourney in Las
Vegas? If so, who won?
Sunday eve I thought Chip Beck and D.A. W(sp?) were tied, am I in the
wrong note???

I don't know if you're in the wrong note or not ;)
But .3 had it right, Andrew Magee defeated D.A. Wybring in sudden
death.
Re which was better? I'm in awe of someone who can shoot 13 birdies
and 5 pars even at Green Meadow, let alone a tour event.
But there were a dozen players -28 for 5 days at this course. It
obviously wasn't very challenging to the pros. Geiberger's 59 seems
more impressive.
How about the choking Walrus, eh? Poised at -26 starting Sunday,
he throws up a nifty 75. Rumor has it there were many helicopter
sightings around his group...

Thank you for setting me straight! #;-)

1381.14 | Hey, 59 is 59 | SAHQ::LIVNGD::LIVENGOOD | What good am I | Mon Nov 11 1991 13:43 | 12 |
| Both Beck and Geiberger scored amazingly well. 59 is unbelievable whether it is
pick-and-clean or down-and-dirty. Like many of the folks in earlier replies,
I'd say Geiberger's round as slightly more impressive.
I'd prefer to throw the pick-and-clean stigma out. If not, then I'd have to say
that any National League world series champion is better than an American League
world champ because the NL doesn't have the DH. And I don't always believe that
to be true either.
Hell, add 10 strokes and I'd take it anyday!
