1356.0. "Boston Area Courses??" by KAOFS::D_SWITZER () Thu Aug 29 1991 19:44

    Hello from Calgary!

    I will be in the Boston area on a training course at
    the end of September. I'm wondering if somebody can
    give me the names of a couple of golf courses which
    allow public play.

    I have a 4 handicap so the tougher they are the better I
    like them.

    Thanks

    Dennis Switzer

1356.1Not Much to Go On...MRKTNG::VARLEYFri Aug 30 1991 11:009
    If you'll have a car, I can name a couple that'll buckle your knees and
    slap your eyes shut - Shattuck Inn and Crumpin-Fox. Unless we know
    where you're staying, the time and day you'll be able to play and your
    ability to travel it's kinda hard. George Wright is supposed to be
    pretty good in Boston, Stow Acres (Stow), Far Corners (Boxford),
    Crystal Springs (Haverhill), Ponkapoag #2 (Canton) and Poquoy Brook
    (Lakeville) are all pretty good.

    Sorry for not giving you all the info, I'll be in Boston
    from Sept 22 until Oct 4 and will be staying at the Princeton Park
    apartments in Lowell, and yes I will have a car.
    I will have 1 weekend in which to play, hopefully 2 courses.

    Thanks Dennis

    	Well if you're staying in Lowell, you should try to get up to
    Nashua and play Sky Meadow. It's only about a 15 minute ride from
    Lowell and a vary nice course to play. It will cost you about $60
    though to play on a weekend, cart included....
1356.4Trull and Green MeadowAKOCOA::BREENBill Breen Ako2-3 244-7984Fri Aug 30 1991 14:485
    TRULL BROOK and GREEN MEADOW , neither difficult but decent for public
    are fairly close by. GM is next to Merrimack river about 12 miles
    north; Trull also is on river opposite direction but ask directions.

    I truely suggest that with a 4 handicap and one weekend that you should
    drive out west and play Crumpin Fox!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Crumpin Fox is one of the highest sloped courses in New England and it
    will be very hard to pay to a 4 there.
    At the same time, try to drive south of Marlboro and play the Franklin
    CC which is now sloped at 141 and was opened in 1898(?). The length of
    the par 4s and the difficult breaks in the greens continue to make this
    the premier private course west of Weston(also Worcester and Mount
    Pleasant, but neither will honor a request for guests!).

    Enjoy New Enland golf.

    If you would like to try Sterling CC, I'd be glad to take you out. I
    am a member and you would get a discount. I don't think you would play
    to a 4 HC at Sterling either. Let me know.

1356.7Franklin ? Hmmmm...MRKTNG::VARLEYTue Sep 03 1991 12:369
     I hope this reply is appropriate here. I was interested in the comment
    on Franklin C.C. I've never played it, but friends who are good players
    who have say it is great. Is it now possible to have your Pro call and
    make arrangements to play - say on a Monday, for example ? I'd sure
    like to see it.

    Thanks guys,

1356.8"Franklin is a golf course"NEMAIL::GLASSTue Sep 03 1991 14:2214
    There are two fine junior golfers coming out of Franklin that reflect
    the level of golf they need to play to be good there or anywhere.
    One is named Maki and the other is Brian Higgens who is my friends 14
    year old son who plays off a 4 at Franklin. Each place well in the
    local events.
    The recent club champion just one his 15th there and plays to a scratch
    at age 55!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Play it. The price and challenge is worth the minor effort to get on
    the course. It is East on RT140 as you leave I495. It plays on the
    south side of RT140 and is hard to miss.
    They have a range to warm up on and I suggest you do before facing the
    very difficult and long Par 4 first.

1356.9Try ShattuckCHRLIE::HUSTONTue Sep 03 1991 14:3217

    If you want a tough test go to Shattuck Inn in Jaffery NH, it would
    be worth the drive. It was sloped the toughest course in New England
    I believe.

    re last couple about Franklin.

    Has any work been done at Franklin CC recently. I graduated from
    Franklin High in 82 and played on the golf team there. I was not
    impressed with anything about the club, and would not consider
    it a tough course. From what I hear about places like Shattuck and
    the Fox, Franklin just doesn't compare. Have the done any work to
    change things in the last several years??

1356.12"WHAT a Country !!"MRKTNG::VARLEYWed Oct 09 1991 14:4122
     You mean that approach actually WORKED ? Or is it an idea that "Just
    seems to make sense..." If it DOES work, a lot of y'all ought to start
    loitering around the "Shrines" in the area and "Spare change" the
    members.
     I guess I lack the necessary chutzpah, but the idea of walking in off
    the street and telling a pro that I didn't know anyone at the club but
    I wanted to play, so - would he find me a member who would play with me
    or sponsor me is pretty raw. Ahh, whatever it takes, I guess. Some pros
    are pretty nice guys and probably won't dial 911.
     Vesper IS a real nice track, especially the par threes, and it's worth
    seeing. I'm always in a quandary about stuff like this, because I wish
    we had the same attitude about making our private courses moderately
    accessible as the British do. Generally, proper introduction is all you
    need - within reason. On the other hand, if I sat on a waiting list for
    7 years and put up a large "Downstroke" for initiation and paid heavy
    dues, I'd probably not be too happy about someone who had no member
    introduction and knew nobody, being able to just walk in and play. I
    guess there's no right or wrong answers.
     O.K. guys, who's going to Brookline tomorrow, who's going to Salem and
    who's going to Myopia ?
