I wanted to add, that by 'best tournament to watch on TV' I didn't
mean to imply that it's the best event (I prefer the Masters). I meant
in terms of a unique setting for a golf tournament. The course looks
like nothing else the pros play. The terrain is completely different.

1343.2 | Clearwater takes early lead... | SNAX::ERICKSON | What? Me Worry! | Fri Aug 16 1991 09:50 | 21 |
| Keith Clearwater took the early lead with a +18 points, a new first
round record. He had 9 birdies and 9 pars for a 63. The scoring system is as
follows.
+8 Double Eagle
+4 Eagle
+2 Birdie
0 Par
-1 Bogey
-3 Anything else
Some of the pro's like the format and other don't like the format.
They play Thursday and Friday, then the field is cut in half. On Saturday
everyone starts at 0 again. After Saturday's play the field is cut to the
top 24 (i think). Then everyone starts at 0 again on Sunday. So to win you
have to have good rounds on both Saturday and Sunday and be fairly consistent
on Thursday and Friday. Greg Norman likes the format, probably because he
usually can't do anything great on Thursday or Friday. He manages to make the
cut though and shoots good rounds on the weekend.

1343.4 | Daly +3? | WALTA::LENEHAN | | Fri Aug 16 1991 13:32 | 12 |

Hi Jim,
I'm pretty sure John Daly was +3 after the first round...
Keith Clearwater went mental and made 9 birdies and 9 pars!,
to score a new record +18 . Ouch.
I'm sure the others are VERY happy with the way they'll
start everyone from zero after the cut! :)

1343.6 | I don't like the format | SIERAS::MCCLUSKY | | Fri Aug 16 1991 22:33 | 6 |
| The original question about the format. I think it "sucks". I prefer
match play for excitement. Then I'll take medal play. I think that
the International is a Rube Goldberg invention arrived at late one
night in the bar after many pitchers, toddies or whatever...

1343.7 | defending the format | CSC32::J_KLEIN | | Sat Aug 17 1991 05:17 | 25 |

In defense of the format...
1. "You should get points for making par" some say (like Ben Wright)
Come on...If you're in stroke play at -10 and you make a par,
you're still at -10. At the International, if you're +10 and
make par, you're still at +10. How can you argue that?
2. The biggest, and probably best argument, is that good play in early
rounds means nothing going into Sunday (the final 24 start even).
Look at the Final Four in College basketball. Last year The UNLV
Runnin' Rebs rolled over everyone in the early rounds and when
they got to the Final Four they started even (and eventually lost,
their earlier fine play meant nothing)
I think it's refreshing to see a gambler's shoot-out event, appropriately
played in the beautiful American West.
(I can hear the Europeans saying I'm laying it on a bit thick) ;^)
