    I own an almost antique, hickory shafted Berwick (brand name) putter
    that belonged to my Dad.  It's still in good shape except that it needs
    to be re-gripped.  (Dad's idea of refreshing the grip was to put a new
    layer of black electrician's tape on it - he was a little cheap).  I
    don't want to bring this putter to a Nevada Bob's for obvious reasons,
    but would like some recommendations as to whether it's even do-able
    given the age (40 or 50 years old) and where I could have it done.
    I'd like to be using the putter.
    
    Suggestions?

    I've used a wood shaft putter for years that has a wrap type of leather
    grip. The back of the leather must be treated with a tacky substance:
    it doesn't come that way. The top of the grip (where you start winding)
    is held down with a large round "tack" that actually goes into the top
    end of the shaft. The leather is then wound down the shaft to the
    requisite point and cut off. On mine, the loose end is secured by
    something that looks amazingly like plain old electrical tape. I doubt
    that's what it actually is, but it's what I've replaced the original
    with. You can buy the leather wrap material in some golf supply
    catalogues I've seen, including Golfsmith ...

    you plan to use it and don't care so much for the $$ value of the club
    then go ahead.
    	There are several people in this conference who do club repairs 
    regrips,etc, maybe one of them can help you.

	But, if the grip is good old electrical tape already, its antique value
is already deminished...

    The Golf Collectors Society(GCS) always has good info on auld clubs.
    
    If you send call John Mross, (414)421-2739, he will send you brown
    leather grips for hickories @ $2 or $3 and wool underlistings with
    tacks @ $1. He also asks for $2 to cover shipping.
    You can then either do it yourself, take it to a cobbler shop or take
    it to a club repair person.
    You will have a lifetime treasure and something to keep, show it play
    with.
