1267.0. "Shattuck Inn GC in Jaffrey,NH?" by MCIS1::NANCYZ () Thu Jun 06 1991 12:16

The Globe sports page awhile back had some complimentary things to say
about the Shattuck Inn Golf Course in Jaffrey, NH. Has anyone played
it, and also would you have any recommendations about the Shattuck Inn
as a place to stay for a weekend of golfing?

I've also posted this note in the New Hampshire conference.

Although I personally haven't played it yet it sounds like a treat.
Bring lots of patients and golf balls because I understand the slope
from the back tees is 151. That compares to 155 from the Tiger tees
at ITT in Bolton. Word has it that this course will be a future site
for the US Amateur a couple of years from now. Rumor has it the course
record so far is 75. The former pro at Torry pines in Francestown, NH
Lyman Doanne is running the place. Should be in mint shape. I have
plans to play it in two weeks. Will let you know.

1267.2Ya gotta play it!GEMINI::JACOBSENThu Jun 06 1991 14:2927
Ah yes... I have played it!

I was formerly a member over at Tory Pines and was shooting in the mid
80's that last half of last season ... then when Lyman got the job at
Shattuck Inn, I became a member over there.

Right now, all they have to offer is GOLF ... with a driving range to
open by July 15th. Until such time as they are able to open the Inn,
the Benjamin Prescott Inn in Jaffrey is offering a Golf package for two
(bed and breakfast plus greens fees) for $99.00. There phone # is
    603-532-6637.

As for the golf, it is spectacluar! With Mount Monadnock as a
back-drop! It is a true test of golf ... as an example, during the
Memorial day weekend, I posted scores of 100, 109 and 98 ... if it
hadn't been for 9 penalty strokes, the 98 could have been an 89.

Every hole has at least four (4) tee boxes and many have six (6) so the
course can satisfy ALL golfers and their abilities. The only
complaint from the low-handicappers has been that they don't get to use
their driver as often as they would like.

Short and straight is the 'name of the game' at this course ... a true
    challenge.

    I highly recommend it...

Going west on route 124, it is about 3 miles outside of Jaffrey Center

There is a BIG sign pointing to a Bible Center and a smaller sign
pointing to the Shattuck Inn ... they are both on the right going
    west on route 124.

It opened for limited play last October but officially opened May 18th.

Riding only has become an issue and may change...

Tee times are pretty good ... they start at 7:00 (walking between 7:00

members can call on Tuesday and public can make tee times starting
    Wednesday at 7:00 A.M....

I played the course last week on a week day. What a great course- extremely
well cared for and beautifully layed out. It was a real treat to see each hole
unfold and to enjoy the surroundings. We were all extremely pleased we took the
time off and played there. It is a real jewel and sparkels like one.

The degree of difficulty is dramatic. The course record is 75 and I'll bet par
will not be broken in my lifetime. Accuracy is key with a premium on precise
carries as many greens are protected with marsh, traps, and rocks. You need to
know your clubs and swing within yourself. The first time out should be to
familiarize yourself with the course because there are so many things to learn
before you could even hope to shoot your regular game.

1267.10Nice recreation but good golf?MR4DEC::TDAVISFri Jul 19 1991 19:1817
I played there last weekend. It's beautiful, but I'm glad it's not MY
club.

I think Silva did a beautiful job of blending the course into the
landscape. Nice bunkering (aesthetically, at least). Spectacular
views. Perfect condition. No doubt about it, it's a great walk in the
park. I don't think its a great golf course though.

You don't have too many options. Keep it in play or pay the price. The
fairways are sometimes generous, sometimes tight, and almost always
bracketed by red stakes. Rough is as scarce as water in a desert. I
played it from the tips and lost seven balls en route to a 90.

Sore looser? Maybe. Like I say, its worth making the trip. It's like
climbing Mt. Monadonock. It's a nice way to spend a morning, but I
wouldn't want to make it a regular commute.

Yup. The red stakes mark a hazzard. There's fairway and hazzard-- and
rarely anything much in between.
1267.13fun, despite some miserable rainNHASAD::BLAISDELLKeep an even keelMon Sep 16 1991 09:4444
Got a chance to play the Shattuck Inn yesterday in the steady depressing
rain. We played from the whites since they were designated as the tees
  for the upcoming CCIII tourney.

The course is in perfect condition. Tees, fairways and greens are
fantastic. The course is built in and around wetlands and as a result,
the wetlands make an appearance on what seems on every hole. Hazards
abound but given the short length of the course 6000 yards (seems shorter
than that even), it really isn't that difficult to stay out of trouble.
I guess what I'm saying is that the course played a lot easier than what
I expected. The blue tees look like a completely different story though!

The greens putted true and you can leave yourself some tricky putts
on a few of the greens. With all the rain yesterday, they accepted
approach shots superbly. They seemed a little slick, course the greens
I normally putt on are incredibly slow. I can see real problems if the
greens dry out and don't hold the approaches well. Didn't notice a lot
of problems around the greens. The second cut next to the fringe is long
and you can find yourself with some awkward chips, but other than that,
not many problems. If you are way off-line with the approaches, than yes
you will be in deep doo-doo.

From the tees, a couple of holes provided unpleasant surprises, but overall
it was WYSWYG. The fairways were wider than I expected. Because of the
short length, woods off the tees will be a rare sight. Approach shots to
most of the greens are the real treat, and with the fairways cut fairly short
and in perfect condition, it is real hard to miss the greens.

As far as the holes, other than a couple of real outstanding par 3's and
a great par 5 on the front site, no particular hole jumped out as particular-
ly difficult or great. All the holes on this course are very very good
though and it is a very beautiful course. For those that like the bump and
run courses, forget it. This is target golf.

Overall, I liked the course very much although the difficulty wasn't
as high as expected. The CCIII champs will be the team that is rock solid
and straight with the irons and have the putters working. It will also help
if someone on the team can hit a high approach shots with the irons. Length
will not be a factor at all. Those that cannot play this course prior to
the tournament will be at a severe disadvantage.

1267.14Play it back! Play it back!MR4DEC::TDAVISMon Sep 16 1991 15:5317
We're not playing from the blues???? A scramble should definitely use
the whole course. I vote for changing the tees to the blues. It's
still a short course. Only two holes that I can remember demand a long
carry off the tee. One of the par 5s (I can't remember which) starts
out over some wetlands, but that's only if they use one of two
possible tee placements. The day I played, the blues on that par-5
hole weren't at the hardest position. But even there, while it looks
like an impossible carry, I don't think it's over 200 yards. The 17th
is actually a longer carry, but I still got to the fairway with a
1-iron into the wind (probably about 220).

I could see not playing the tips at International, where EVERY hole
demands a 250+ carry; that would be unfair. But there's no reason to
play this course up. With two player's playing each shot it SHOULD be
tough.

Well, I "Bit the bullet" and played Shattuck Inn yesterday. The course
has flaws sprinkled throughout, but I loved it. Played it from the
tips, and it's the hardest thing I have EVER seen. Harder than Medinah
#3, harder than Shinnecock Hills, harder than Pine Valley - I'm talkin'
HARD !! What a beautiful place, and very nice people. The guys in front
of us had a tote bag full of balls on their cart, and were laughing
    about it.

I'd like to go back when I was playing o.k., and during the week when,
I'm sure, it's quiet and just take my time and enjoy it. A range would
help, too. I liked the back 9 better - less "Goofy golf," but the
first two par 4's and both par 3's are terrific. The second par 3 might
be (From the tips) the hardest hole I've ever played. Plus, there's
gotta be bass in those wetlands... As Arnold says, "I'll be back !"

    hi Everyone,

I was out for a while and forgot to mention a funny thing that
    	happened during Challenge Cup III...

My partner and I were playing the par 5 (sorry I don't know the
number) but you know the one, it has the green just over a creek,
with a WALL of rock behind it.

Anyway, we had a decent score going... and at this point played
this par 5 poorly. We were hitting our approach shots from
175yards (making that green look itty bitty) . The wind was REALLY
    	gusting, from all directions.

My partner went first , and hit what looked/sounded like the right
shot... PLUNK! airmailed it into the creek.

My turn;	I use a 6 iron from 172, but the wind was in my face... so I
dropped to a 5 iron. As I was setting up to play the 5 iron, the wind
shifted and was almost coming at me from the side. I quickly grabbed
the 6 iron and began my swing... right about at the top of my
backswing the wind started gusting at my back! I tried to ease into
the shot... and ended up hitting it flush right at the stick.

As I stood watching the ball fly toward the green , I wasn't sure
whether to cheer for more distance or less? But right about when
I expected the ball to start dropping toward the green, it kept
rising! I felt sick. Helpless. I just ended our chances. The
ball soared over the green and "BOING" hit the mass of rock
about 15 feet up the mountain.

I stared hoping to keep from loosing "another" ball. But instead
of ricocheting into the woods.......... The ball
went high into the air back toward the flag! Once again,
I didn't know whether to cheer for more distance or less? It could
either land up near the rock in the rough, or worse clear the
green and end up with my partner in the creek?

The ball flew just past the flag and came down 5 feet from the
hole! It left us a very makeable 5 footer dead straight uphill
    	for birdie!

What a fun game this is ;)

1267.21Update on Shattuck InnKOALA::DEFELICEWed Jun 01 1994 14:4327
Finally got the chance to make it out to Shattuck Inn for this past
Memorial Day. Actually, I ran across some great discount coupons
worth $20 per player so I decided to make the trip.

Reading through past notes on this course will give you some
indication of the layout and difficulty. Visually, a very stunning
place compared with anything else around here. I liked it and the
people there very much. Pretty laid-back and rustic, but the course
itself is quite dramatic. Each hole (with maybe one exception) was
an adventure in itself. I used to think Shaker Hills was tough until
    I played Shattuck...

The greens were a bit disappointing, especially after reading the
past notes on how well kept Shattuck is/was. Due to the coupons, the
greens, and the lack of traffic on a major holiday, I wondered if
they were experiencing some financial problems. Anyway, couldn't
hold much of anything except short irons, which made the course
really tough to play. My good friend found a dozen balls tracking
down one of his errant shots. Before the day was over he had lost
    every one of them.

All in all, a great day. I loved the course and I am definitely
going back, soon. Hope the greens improve by then.

(Make sure you save this place for when your iron game is on. Most
approach shots are all carry with very little forgiveness is you are
    strong or wide.)

Got to play Shattuck on Sunday, a beautiful day at least
weatherwise for the first 18 holes. We played it from the tips and
if the blue tees weren't on the backmost tees, we played it the
backmost teeboxes except for #5 since it basicall shares the teebox
with #3. I was happy to shoot 107 :^) and managed to clean my bag of
about 12 of my old scruffy balls... Managed 4 pars on the day. The
course was in good shape, some fairways had brown barren spots but the
    greens were in great shape!
Cost $35 w/o cart and $10 for a cart so I walked with my pullcart
as I didn't find it a difficult course to walk previous times. They
now have a weekday special there for $25 with or without cart. They
hope to remain open until Nov 15th.

The only way I know for sure is 495 to Rt 119 in Littleton, at LKG.
Take 119 west toward Groton. (this should sound familiar).
Follow 119 to Rindge N.H. at flashing yellow light turn right following
the signs to Cathedral of the Pines. Follow that road to the end.
Turn left onto Rt 124. The road to Shattuck will be on your right about
3 miles after the center of Jaffery.

The other way is 495 to Rt 2 west. Take the exit after the Mt. Wachusett
exit which is Rt 140. This is where I'm not sure..... Follow 140 north
to Rt 12 to Rt 202. You want to get to Rt 202 north. When you get to
Rindge you'll pass a Wal-Mart on the left, go through the lights and
watch for Rt. 124 on your right. The road to Shattuck will be on your left.

Maybe someone can correct or confirm how you get to 202 from 140.

I wouldn't quite describe it that way...

You're fine 'til you get past WalMart. But to be perhaps a little clearer:

Take Rt 2 to the Rt 140 north to Winchendon. Follow that until you come to
a stop sign, which is Rt 12. Take a left. Go down about a mile to Rt 202 to
Rindge/Jaffrey. Just stay on 202 past WalMart, through the lights at Rt.
119, until you come to the lights in downtown Jaffrey. Take a left (I think that
puts you on Rt. 124, but I'm not too good about names/numbers). Go down
about...I'm not real sure here... about, um, 3 miles (?) - the road to
Shattuck is on the *RIGHT*. There's a sign on the corner, but it's not
particularly conspicuous, so keep your eyes open (you should be doing that
anywho, since you're driving :')). Shattuck is just a little ways down that
road.

LAst I heard (last year) conditions had gone down hill some. Don't know
whether it has new, more caring owners now. Good luck. And bring lots of
balls. My recommendation: Enjoy the surrounding nature and forget the
score, else Shattuck is truly "a good walk spoiled."
