1265.0. "US OPEN BETTING." by WELCLU::MEIKLE () Thu Jun 06 1991 05:19

Now that the US OPEN is nearly upon us, I am interested to know who you
would consider putting your money on.

I prefer to choose "outsiders" that could come good, I saw Seve play at
Woburn in the Dunhill British Masters last week and he is obviously on
a hot streak at the moment which is why he is favourite.

Here is a list of a few odds from Surrey Racing What's your choice?

    8 Seve Ballesteros 50 W Grady 66 M McCumber
    9 Nick Faldo 50 H Irwin 66 P Mickleson
    10 Ian Woosnam 50 D Love III 66 J Mudd
    16 Greg Norman 50 R Mediate 66 M O'Meara
    18 Paul Azinger 50 L Mize 66 N Price
    18 Mark Calcavecchia 50 J Nicklaus 66 R Rafferty
    18 Bernhard Langer 50 S Pate 66 S Simpson
    20 Payne Stewart 50 T Purtzer 66 B Tway
    22 Curtis Strange 50 T Simpson 80 R Davis
    28 Lanny Wadkins 50 J Sluman 80 M Donald
    33 Ian Baker-Finch 50 C Stadler 80 S Jones
    33 Fred Couples 50 H Sutton 80 B Mayfair
    33 Mark Mcnulty 50 F Zoeller 80 A Magee
    33 Corey Pavin 66 J Cook 80 L Nelson
    33 Tom Watson 66 R Floyd 80 J Osaki
    40 Chip Beck 66 R Gamez 100 A Bean
    40 Tom Kite 66 S Hoch 100 M Brooks
    50 B Andrade 66 J Huston 100 J Gallagher
    50 B Crenshaw 66 P Jacobsen 100 M Harwood
    50 S Elkington 66 B Lietzke 100 G Morgan
    50 D Frost 66 W Levi 100 G Sauers

Names that I think could be worth an each way bet are:

Corey Pavin, Steve Elkington, Steve Pate, Steve Jones, Phil Mickleson.

For shorter odds Jose Olazabel is my choice, I look forward to hearing
    yours.

Please explain the quoted odds. Is each number adjacent to the
golfer's name, the odds against a single bet? So that for a $1(U.S.)
bet the return is $50(U.S.) when Jack N. wins? Also could you please
explain "...an each way bet...". Thanks for helping.

I'll still go with 10000-1, the twin trifecta:

1265.3PLACE YOU MONEYWELCLU::MEIKLEFri Jun 07 1991 07:4218

RE.1 Yes, a $1 bet on Big Jack would return $50 which is why an each
way bet is a good idea.
ie.$1 each way is $1 on the win at 50-1 and $1 on a place in the 1st
4 giving 1/4 odds. Not a bad bet at 12.5-1 to come in the 1st 4.
This means that you pass over $2 MAC.

RE.2 ANG. Is'nt Jim Hallet the guy that wears the Funny Cowboy style hat?
No-one wins majors wearing a funny hat!
(Whoops-Ben Hogan may argue that point!)
         I think i'd have a $1 at 10000-1!

Can anyone support me in Phil Mickleson as an outside bet?

My money is going on an outsider. Mr Sourface himself - Mark
Calcavachia- . He has got to be the most miserable player ever to set
foot on a course. What a difference from Lee Trevino. By the way my
money is also going on in respect to both his golf and I really come up
trumps if the guy breaks into a smile- the odds I've been quoted are
    350-1.

I tried to scan the list for a smattering of European players then I
remebered this is after all the US Open, and you have to walk across
the Atlantic to qualify. A feat some of our tour are well able to do.

With odds like those, I'd bet on Andrade (2 wins in a row and hot), Kite
who keeps the ball in play and Mize, who also hits out of the short grass a lot
and can get streaky. I'd also put something on Faldo.

I like Mcnulty at 33/1. He'll be close.....
Hit's the ball straight and always comes with a late finish.
    Worth 5 !!

My money is on the Woos. The way he was treated at the Masters
nothing would please him more than winning the U.S. Open.
    Love that guy.

OK, here I come with my eternal favourite: SEVERIANO

Boy, is he back!!! Two major championships in a row in Europe,
British PGA and Masters, and a very good showing this weekend at the
Buick Tourney, better than any other european player who came for the
    US Open.

He was interviewed after his last round and all he said on why he was
back was because he was making his putts.

He will definitely be in contention this Sunday.

    My national bet: Pavin

I'll support you on Phil Mickelson to finish in the top 25. Heck of a
player even though he didn't win the NCAA's. (4th or 5th i believe).

    My money as follows:

    Watson
    Seve

Can't see any of our European guys having their game in shape to win at
Hazeltine. Whilst Seve's been playing great, he sprays it about too
much I feel. Bernhard's got a good chance though.

My bets have been placed !

I think that the winner will be from Seve, Faldo, Azinger, Olazabel and
    Woosie.

Thats why i've put my money on Elkington,Pate,Levi and Watson !!!

Theres nothing like an outsider doing well is there ?!

From 17 replies not one of us even mentioned Payne Stewart or Scott
    Simpson !!

I thought he had a stiff neck !!? and Scott was a one win wonder !!?

Oh well, it just goes to show how unpredictable this game is.

1265.19A couple of great swingsTSO02::STACKSun Jun 30 1991 14:2116
I was pleased to see Payne back in action. The guy has such a great
swing. Beautiful tempo and so smooth. Both of these guys have great
    swings.

It was great to see Jerry Pate back in action even though he didn't
make the cut. Talk about great swings. I'd put him right up there
with the great swings in golf. So smooth and classic. Too bad he had
injury problems throughout his career. Here's a guy that could've made
a fortune on the tour if he had remained healthy. Too bad, a nice guy
too. He had a personality also which a lot of these flat-stomachs
    don't.

Hopefully we'll be seeing more of Mr. Pate in the future.
