1255.1 | Doubtfull on par 5's | MEMORY::HUGHES | Life is too SHORT to take it serious | Fri May 24 1991 15:01 | 11 |
| I know of a guy back home who hit a hole-in-one on a par 4.
The hole is a dog-leg right, about 345yds. The last 120yds in
front of the green slope from left to right down towards the
green. I hit it on the fring once, but that was the closest I
have ever gotten on that hole.
There has also been a few hole-in-ones on the par 3 16th hole
of the same course. The card says it's 225 yds.

I got a Hole-in-0ne at a course in Tuam, Co. Galway (130yrd-PAR3).
Coincidently, it was the first time I played on an 18-hole course
and about my 7th game of golf ever. Needless to say I haven't had
any such luck since (probably never will again!!)

1255.3 | 2 net zero | USEM::VOUTSELAS | | Wed May 29 1991 10:18 | 16 |
| More Fresh Pond stories,
A freind of mine who will be 83 this year had a birdie net "zero".
On the 8th hole at Fresh Pond golf course( now the Tip O'Neil
GC) in Cambridge, birdied the par 3 with 2 strokes !!
He can't make it over the water( 170 yds) so lays up to the right
and chipped in .
He is a 29 handicapper who still plays 18 every other day and walks.
I think it made the Globe a few years back.Jim Natale is the guy.

Hi Everyone,
I was playing golf saturday with a friend of mine Don Poulsen.
We played Easton CC... they had temperary greens and temperary
tees. On one of the par 3's which played to approximately
70 yards.. Don hit a smooth 8 iron (bump and run) and it went
smack into the hole! Talk about a tough ace!
Question is; Does this count as a hole in one?
Merry Xmas;

| Is it a regulation size hole? (Was it the 6th hole?) The reason
I ask is that sometimes with temp greens they use a bigger hole/cup.
I would say if it's a regular size hole then count it as one.

Hi Bob,
It was the 14th hole... and the holes were the same size as
a regular hole. I was wondering if there was a distance
requirement? For difficulty, it was probably more difficult
than making an ace under normal playing conditions :) !

1255.7 | Good practice but not real | SONATA::FEENEY | non golfers live half a life | Tue Dec 24 1991 13:21 | 9 |
| Hi Walta
I was there Sunday. The course is great for practice given the $10 greens fee
and it is wide open with little or no snow but I would not count anything as real
given the frozen ground and temporary greens.
Regards Phil
p.s. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it!

Maybe the USGA can tell us for sure?

It cannot be anything else BUT a hole in one!
Afterall, he wasn't lying 1 when he hit the ball.
Seriously,he took one stroke=hole in one.

re .8 I don't think the USGA even cares what a hole-in-1 is. Don't
take that the wrong way but they don't rule on things like that.
Thwy would care if it was an officially sized hole, or club, or ball,
but a hole-in-1 doesn't concern them. I belive it would be up to the
local committee.
IMHO sound like a 1 to me. Congrats!!!!!

Hi Everyone,
Without any "official" response yet... it seems to me based
on your input, and it reads in the "USA Rules of Golf" a
par 3 is upto 250 yards.... that there isn't any reason
not to count it.
THEREFORE, CONGRATULATIONS Mr. Don Poulsen on your first
hole in one, I hope you have many more! I just wish I saw it...
I hit first, and QUICKLY ran for the nearest tree... when
natures calls you gotta listen! So I still haven't seen a hole in
one live! :( .

I can't find the note you posted a reply to regarding your buddy getting an ACE
at Easton Country Club last Saturday. I had said I would not count given it
being winter with temporary greens. Since my buddy got on on the sixth this
Saturday, we all decided to count it and got our drinks. It was a good shot and
we played from the real tees as the marked tees were too short. I guess ones
perspectve depends on what's in it for you.
It was his first ACE after playing 20 years.

| If it had been anyone else but Don, I'd say the hole in one doesn't
count -- just to be mean. But Don? I'd give him credit for an ace if
he put his tee shot anywhere NEAR the green. He deserves it.
Don caddied for me during a practice round at The Country Club for the
state ams. He was incredible. After playing against me in the DEC
league for several years, he had every right to give me the wrong
club, make me rake HIS footprints in the traps, and cough while I
putted. Be he was not only a good companion, he was an amazing caddie.
If you're listening, Don, get a bag on the tour. You'll be happier,
and, if you're lucky, you'll be richer.
So for putting up with me while I thrashed, hacked, and humiliated
myself on that US Open venue, I say "open bar," Don got an ace.

| Congratulations Don Poulsen on your hole in one!!!
All of my hole in ones have occurred on the Super
Executive Courses ( otherwise known as miniature
golf ) and I have counted them, so I see no reason
for Don not to count his.
Knowing Don, I have to wonder, was he aiming for
the temporary flag before the green or was he
aiming for the green itelf and hit it a little
fat?
Hope you saved the ball.
Congratulations again Don,
/Dave

1255.16 | Guess It Was My Turn... | MRKTNG::VARLEY | | Mon Jun 08 1992 10:46 | 31 |
| Sunday (6/7) I got my first hole in one while making my 3rd appearance
of the year at Crumpin-Fox. It was on the 15th hole, which was playing
around 165 yards from the right hand tee box. Here's the story:
Our opponents hit two nice shots on the green - couldn't really see
the base of the pin. My partner knocks it on, too. I said " I'm gonna
switch to a Pinnacle Gold, for no apparent reason. I guess I'll be
playing with it for awhile (I lost a couple of other balls
previously...)." Grabbed a 5 iron so I could hit it easy (no trouble
over, but the lake in front is a LOT of trouble...) and hit what looked
to be a good shot. One of my opponents (hate the term - these guys were
as nice as anyone I've ever played with) says "It's in the jar." Being
superstitious, I said "Naw, I kinda thinned it." I got to the green and
saw 3 balls - one right behind the pin, about 8 feet. I thought, "Gee I
must have rolled right by it," and went to look at the ball. Titleist
One. Walked over to the hole, looked in the cup and - Pinnacle Gold !
Goosebumps all over ! All the guys got excited, and one of 'em promptly
rolls in a nice birdie !
I've seen 'em, but never thought that I'd get one. I hung one on the
lip at Taconic, and bounced one out of the hole at Pine Valley, but - I
figgered it just wasn't meant to be. I'm not much of a hoopin' and
hollerin' kind of guy, but I sure did smile a lot - even though I
played like a piece of crap, and shot 90. Sometimes things happen that
make even bad days worthwhile. For me, the best part was playing with a
couple of guys for the first time that were about as enjoyable to play
with as anyone I've met. We're doin' it again, next weekend.

1255.18 | way to go JV | DPDMAI::VENEZIO | Perfect Practice Makes Perfect | Tue Jun 09 1992 19:47 | 29 |
| Congrats. Oh what a feeling Toyota!!!
When I made mine, it was a similar story only it was the big member
guest at the club I was playing at. I also didn't think it went in. My
partner is right behind the hole and mine was in. A long one for me
217 yds.
The only draw back was the guys we were playing against weren't as
nice. I take my ball out of the hole, my partner and I are high fiv'n
it all over the green and one of the guys is pissed because he gets a
stroke off my ball and needs a ninety yarder to halve. He claims we
were spiking the green and his ball didn't have a fair chance to go in.
True story
What a horses rear. The one part I remember vividly was hitting my tee
shot on the next hole. My knees were shaking so much, I hardly got the
club back. Needless to say I had the honors. I've been real close since
then but no cigars.
One day I played 18 holes at a place called Tumble Brook CC in W.
Hartford and came within inches on all the par threes. 4 tap-in gimmee
birdies. One shot lipped the cup for an ace. The other three rolled
right over or right by the hole. Thats scary. I had the flag keep one
out on a windy day at Brook Manor Rockville MD. Funny how you can
recall certain shots.
Good luck on the next one.

1255.19 | Classy Guys... | MRKTNG::VARLEY | | Wed Jun 10 1992 10:06 | 22 |
| Great story too, Ken. Truthfully, I wasn't nervous at all on the next
tee, but I was just so damn tired from a late night with 3 hrs sleep
that I got into the pull hooks. Always happens when I'm tired, and
Crumpin-Fox is NOT the place to have 'em...
It's too bad that when guys get into tournamenys, leagues etc. that so
many of 'em get so competitive and turn into dorks. As far as I'm
concerned, the only guys that can PLAY have their names on their bags
and are on TV on Sunday. Everyone else just plays bass, so we might as
well lighten up,
It's funny how golfers are fanatic about what really is a good shot.
The best shot I hit that day was a PW over the flag (and green...) on
#1. It was probably the best feeling, solidest iron I've hit in weeks,
but it wasn't the most effective. My partner birdied #s 18 and 1 (we
started on the back) with six of the most perfect shots I've ever seen.
I think that impressed me as much as my one swing. I asked the guys in
the shop to find out if Pinnacle (Acushnet) does anything for
holes-in-one. I might even get a small piece of memorabilia out of it,
but I'll get the card framed anyway. Wish I could erase the doubles...

1255.20 | Plenty Coming | DPDMAI::VENEZIO | Perfect Practice Makes Perfect | Wed Jun 10 1992 11:41 | 10 |
| Jack, you should get plenty of memoribilia. I got something from the
ball manufactuer (Wilson Hole in 1 plaque), club (Hogan trinket) Shoe
(Foot Joy key ring) and most memorable, got in the Golf Hall of Fame.
At the time, every hole in 1 was entered into a data base in the Hall
of Fame. Had a chance to go to Pinehurst and look it up.
These days, Johnny Walker Scotch does a big thing. Your pro should get
you the details.

| I got one myself last November (do you want to hear the part about how
I had started playing just the March before? my husband doesn't)
There's the National Hole-In-0ne Association where you can register
your HIO for free and they'll send you a nice certificate. Call
800-hio-golf. They'll send you other information about a golfer's
travel club, newsletters, etc. You can easily ignore that part, except
for the catalog of nice trophies, plaques etc, you can buy to mount
your ball and/or scorecard.
Also, Golf Digest has a HIO clearinghouse in conjuction with Johnnie
Walker. There is a registration form to fill out. They will send you a
nice certificate and will forward your name to the manufacturers of the
equipment you used. Then you'll get more stuff and be registered in a
sweepstakes to win more stuff. I just have the adddress for that:
Golf Digest HIO Clearinghouse, Box 397, Trumball, CT 06611-0397.
Golf for Women magazine prints your name and send a certificate to you.
That may not apply in your case. It's a lot of fun.
Enjoy!

holes-in-one in his lifetime, and he achieved them all on the same hole at

of them...exciting when you can watch one land on the green, and roll
