1215.0. "Strange Happenings" by RAYBOK::COOPER (One-ton Tomato !) Thu Apr 18 1991 19:28

         Had a most unusual occurence on the course the other night.
    I was playin a 145 yard par 3 hole. Hit a great appoach shot
    but it looked funny when it landed. I'm very nearsighted and can only
    follow a ball for about 150 yards anyway so I wasn't sure as to what I
    had seen. When I got to the green, I was shocked to find a dead sparrow
    lying right next to my ball mark. His little head had been crushed.
    I guess that is a literal birdie huh ?

    A friend of mine gave a rabbit who was sitting on the green a severe
    headache a few years back. Luckily after a quick visit to the vet the
    rabbit was right as rain again.

1215.6trained squirrels ?ATPS::MILLERWed Apr 24 1991 12:4917

    	A few years ago at No. 5 at the North Course at Stow Acres I
    	overshoot the green. While walking up to the green I noticed a
    	squirrel approach my ball, grab it in its mouth and run off up
    	a tree just to the left of the green. He deposited the ball in
    	a crotch in the tree. Me and member of my foresome tried tossing
    	some branches to dislodge the ball to no avail. After putting
    	out and walking over to the sixth tee we found the ball at the base
    	of the tree with two sets of squirrel teeth marks!

    	I showed the ball to pro shop attendent telling him that the course
    	was tough enuf with having trained squirrels to run off with our
    	golf balls. He did offer me a free one out of their used ball jar.

    	So, when your ball disappears after landing in the woods, look up
    	high on occasion.

Is this another of those April Fools stories? Chuck, give away free balls? I
find that hard to believe.....If it's true I hope you saved it. That ball is
rarer than a hole in 1!  ;-)

1215.8Phantom ball-thief at West Berks ?CHEFS::HEELANAndaluz por deseoWed Apr 24 1991 17:0126
    re: .6

    Playing a regular two-ball match at West Berks, near Newbury/Reading,
    UK....my opponent an I tee-off on the 7th hole, dead-straight
    150-yarder....I land slight to the left off the green..... my opponents
    ball lands two feet from the pin..... when we get to the green, my
    opponent's ball is nowhere to be seen (mine is OK)...we look in the
    hole (not there), we look for the ball to be 100% plugged (green too
    firm for that), we did not see any bird or squirrel steal the ball...
    we _saw_ it land on the green and _not_ roll off !

    What the *&*&^$$% happened to it ?

    Next hole, (250-yarder, straight), we both hit good tee-shots
    straight down the middle of the fairway, landing and rolling straight
    at the 200 mark.... when we get there, neither of the balls is to be
    seen !.....

    After the previous hole, we kept a careful look for birds, animals,
    humans, plugs.... nobody, nothing, no balls.....

    Puzzling, huh ?

    Could be a ball thief. I was playing a muni built around a housing
    development one Saturday afternoon. I hit a very close approach shot on
    a par five and saw two young boys run of with all the balls on the
    green and disappear into the housing devel. They must have been hiding
    between houses and waited until everyone reached the green.

    We all watched them but were 100 yds out in the fairway. Too far to
    catch a couple of 10 year olds.

    Just one of those things.

    Hi,

    	Children do the darndest things;

    	A guy I know told me when he was younger, him and his friends use
    	to wait near the green on a par 4, where the players would be
    	hitting their 2nd shot blind to the hole.

    	When the ball would land near the flag, they would run out and
    	place it in the hole... then hide in the bushes and wait for
    	the excitement. Boys will be boys!

1215.11ONE BALL Missing?CTOAVX::DAVENPORTMon Apr 29 1991 11:3330
          Playing this weekend I had a couple freak things that happened
to me. Saturday I was playing in a 2 ball/best ball at Quaboag CC,on the
second hole(it is a par 3 225yds) I had hit my ball into the green side
trap an my partner had pushed his almost into the first fairway. He was
down in a little gulley an I was standing next to the trap waiting for him
to hit. He hit the ball an bladed it lined drive right at me, I turned to
the side to try an get out of the way but the ball hit me right in the
hip. I said OUCH!,then turning to my partner I said,"Where did it go?" He
just looked at me an the oppenents in the foursome said they didn't see
it land. Well we looked around for a minute an I just happened to look at
my hip to see if there was any blood or anything cause I had white pants
on an I was hit pretty hard. When I said what the hell is this,I reached into
my left hand pants pocket an there was my partners ball!
   Ruling: Drop ball to nearest point of entry.

       The next thing that happened to me was Sunday at the same course
on the 4th hole. I had hit my drive to about the 150 marker an I had a
pitching wedge to the green. I hit my ball an my divot when flying,WHERE?
   My partner had a glass of soda in the cart an the divot flew right into
it! The foursome was laughing so hard that the hole was called a draw fro noone
could hit the ball after that.

    No secret,the green is in a little valley and the carry is a lot
shorter if it were just a straight shot. most of the time it kicks off
the slope of the hill an bounces on.

He gave you the correct procedure for returning the ball to play, but...

...it should have been 2 strokes. I agree with you, tho'. The pro should
know.

1215.17Nice shot! Too bad!INDEV1::SMITHI need two of everything...Mon Jun 28 1993 17:0218
    Here's a weird one.
    I was playing at Locust Valley CC inthe league last Thursday. On
    the par 4 # 5 hole I hit a totally ugly drive into the long, I'm
    talking almost knee deep hay-like grass. Somehow I found my ball,
    and actually it was sitting up ok. I took my 4 iron out and lined
    up the shot and swung. Out came NOT one, but TWO balls! I guess my
    ball was directly on the other one or nearly on it. My ball went
    pretty good, maybe 100 yards (not bad out of that), the other only went
    about 15yds. One guy in the foursome said 'nice shot', the other said
    'best you could do out of that stuff'.

    We laughed about it and continued on. in the club house, I asked if
    I should have taken a penalty stroke for hitting the wrong ball?

    It didn't matter because of the quota... but should I have?
