| | Neil-
Junior sets come in 2 sizes - Age 5-9 and 10-14. I purchased the
5-9 version for my son a number of yrs ago at Spags in Shrewsbury.
This past Christmas, I picked up a similar set for a friend at Spags
and shipped it off to Philadelphia. Cost was $69 and include a 2 wood
(metal), 5, 7 and 9 iron plus a putter. It also comes with a small bag
which is perfectly functional. Northwestern brand. My son is turning
10 this year so I've purchased the the larger size from a catalog-
Golfsmith out of Texas. The reason I used the catalog this time around
is that I wnated a little better quality although Spags offered some
clubs in the larger junior size. I can't remember if Golfsmith had a
set in the 5-9 age group. I can check if you'd like.
By the way....my son wore out that first set of clubs. He used them so
much, esp in the back yard. Well worth the $69!
He doesn't know yet that he's graduating to the next size. I got the
set from Golfsmith hidden and plan to give them to him for his birthday
    in early May!
    Regards,
    Denis

| | What I did with my son is that I ordered a set of starter set
components and he and I built his set of clubs. It's relatively
inexpensive and is a great way to get him really involved in the
    game.

| | Neil,

just be aware of what actually happens to a boy's golf swing during
    the "growth" years.
I introduced mine at 12, and during the "13 to 15" stage
his swing went "sour". We could not figure it out, other than
his plane changed so much while growing that he sliced everything.

Sour for him at that time was 94 on South at Stow Acres.
    He's now a strong 6 at 18.
    fyi,
    Ang

| | I don't think that cutting down a set of clubs intended for adults
is your best alternative. Youth clubs have heads that are smaller
and weigh less. It might be asking to much of your 5 year old to
swing cut down adult clubs. I too purchased a set of youth clubs
from Spag's for my son. I've also seen them at Nevada Bob's and
K-Mart. Got the best buy ($75) for a youth ( Ages 10-15??) set that
    contained: 1 & 3 woods plus 3, 5, 7, 9 irons and a putter. Lessons
this May for his birthday, gave him the clubs last year. Maybe some
one has a used set that is ready to sell them?? Good luck.
