Joe Dey passed away several days ago, and I didn't want his demise to remain unmentioned. Mr. Dey was the head of the U.S.G.A. for 35 years, and was the prime moving force in Amateur golf in America. He was a man of character and integrity who loved the game in its purest sense. When I compare a man like Joe Dey to Deane Beaman, there isn't much to say for the latter. Joe Dey was probably the last of the "Old school" of gentlemen who are articulate, intelligent and courteous and devote their life to golf. His like may not be seen again, but I think Sandy Tatum has a chance to be the next reasonable facsimile. --Jack

re Joe Dey Hear, hear... I saw Joe Dey being interviewed several times and also read articles that he wrote. He always came across as a man who saw himself as a humble servant of the game. Always a positive thinking man, he was a breath of fresh air amongst the golfing gurus. I think he epitomised the real traditions of the game which I think are fading away somewhat in modern golf. martin |
