Jack,
Gene's phone number is 603-895-0115.
Now that I put the number down, I wonder if it is correct.
I received a discount mail flyer from him the other day.
Hope his new venture is going well. Gene is in Raymond, NH.
I also believe he put a farewell note that listed his number.

| Thanks for all the help, guys. I just got off the phone with Gene, and
I'm meeting him tomorrow to give him the clubs for re-shafting. I'm
looking forward to messing around with these sticks. Probably can't hit
'em any more, but this is cheaper than buying clubs. The blades are
about as nice as any I've seen, too.

| Good move Jack. Gene is meticulous. He has given me many tips over
the years. I do alot of club work now, (hobby), and Gene kept me
straight early on.

1150.6 | Re-shaft kids clubs | OTOA01::MOWBRAY | from Newfoundland | Thu Feb 07 1991 09:22 | 13 |
| Just to wrestle this topic a slightly different way ........
Both my wife and are planning to take up golf this year (she played
years ago and I just started last year). We feel that it would be fun
to play as a family (i do recognize that there is a flaw in that logic
perhaps but we'll try anyway). The big question is what to do about
our 6 year old son ? I thought that I could get a cheap club, re-shaft
it somehow to the right height for him and then get him to play along
with us. A set of clubs would be overkill but I thought one iron and a
putter would be OK.
Does this make sense ? If so how do I go about it, if not what does ?
Thanks

| Get a ladies iron and wood at a yard sale, cut it down and regrip it.
Buy some wiffle balls and supervise the kid while he hits balls in the
yard. Then, get him in a beginners junior golf class.
IMO, kids who have never played don't belong on the golf course.
You'll hold up the whole course, whether you're playing or letting
people go through. If you have to bring him, let him hit a FEW shots
when it won't hold others up, to see if he seems to like it.

1150.8 | Austads "Toby" set-on sale | CSSE::STANZ | | Thu Feb 07 1991 09:59 | 17 |
| re:-1
In the latest Austads catalog, there is a "Toby" set for youngsters.
They have a set for ages 4-6 and a set for ages 7-9. The set includes
a putter and a 7 iron that are the right length, plus an instructional
book entitled "Play Golf with Toby" which "brings the game down to your
youngsters level, and presents the basics in a clear, understandable
manner."
The package costs 29.95 (on sale). The catalog # for 7-9 year old set
is #TC93. Austads toll free is 800-795-4653. MC/VISA/AMEX/DISCOVER
Hope this helps,
Regards,
Stan Z.

| RE: Kids and golf!
I'd have to agree with the Austads note. Cutting down a club, even a
ladies club, just might be to heavy for a 6 year old. As for playing,
take him along. I took my daughter when she was about 7 and this looks
like the year she'll catch on. What we did to speed up play was to
play a modified scramble format. I'd tee off, she'd take a couple of
wacks at it, then pick it up and carry it to my ball. I'd hit on the
green (actually toward the green but who's counting :-)), she'd take a
couple of mre wacks and carry it to the green. We'd only count her
putts for score. One piece of advice, don't teach him how to hold the
club, swing it,........ Just let him take a rip at it and never mind
where it goes or how it gets there. If it isn't fun, and easy then he
won't come back!

| Thats sort of what I had in mind .... I dont mind saying though I worry
a little that I might have to carry my ball to his but you pay your
money and takes your chances !
I think the weight of the club will be OK as he inherited my genes for
size and is pretty blocky for his age. Thanks for the advice and we'll
see what happens when the snow goes away.

Since it's been a couple of years since the last reply here,
Does anyone know of a good club repair shop/person in the Southern NH.
or Northeastern Ma area. I'd like to have a Big Bertha reshafted.
Thanks,

Mark,
Try Ken Collins at Collins Kustom Clubs in Manchester. He just
made a set of clubs for me and I would highly recommend his work.
He reshafted a 9-iron for me last year as well. A good man to do
business with.

You can tell him I referred you to him. Call soon because he is
starting to get very busy.
