| Hi Shane,
I too am a member at a 9 hole course ... It wouldn't be fair
to the others if we entered an 18 hole round. All the information
gained playing the first nine would definitely make the 2nd nine
easier. Compared to someone playing 18 different holes we would
have an unfair advantage.
Being that the tourny will last until Dec 1st, it'll give both of us
ample time to play many 18 hole courses to compensate ;) !! Did you
hear that Eunhwa? I said "Many" 18 hole courses :)))) !

Discussing 9 holes twice, versus 18 in ease of play. I understand
how you may feel it's arguable that 9 holes twice is more difficult...
a couple of other things can go wrong ; such as
-'s
previous bad results inducing fear of failure
lack of concentration (becoming lethargic)
even though, the +'s far outway the -'s ;
knowing what club to hit
knowing where to hit (whether the ball will hold or
release)
Knowing from the fairway which part of the green to hit,
to stay low of the hole.
Knowing the speed of each green, for putting and pitch
and rolls.
I find if I can fight the tendancy to remember my failures, and
stay allert... the back nine will almost always play easier.

| Walta, I'll muddy the water a bit and say "what about playing a 9 hole
course from 2 different sets of tees ?" Truthfully, I agree with you.
Perhaps there might be a separate category for the 9 holes twice folks
to resolve this. In any case, the 9 holers should have to play
different tees on the back 9 or they'll only be seeing 9 different
holes for the event - not 18.
It doesn't matter to me, because on the course I hang my hat on, I'm

| Hi Wally,
I have a suggestion. Since majority of the replies think that they
won't benefit from playing 9-holes twice and only the good players
may benefit from it, why not allow two 9-holes scores in the net
catagory? And, restrict the gross catagory to 18-holes scores.
I wouldn't want to mix the tees either because for women or
novice men playing from the white or the blue tees could make a big
difference.

Hi Y'all ,
I think Jacks idea is a good one... I see no reason why we can't
add another category for "9 holes x 2" , just make sure you hit from
a different set of tee's.
The idea behind the tourny is to make it easy enough that everyone
can compete... the more the merrier. Being that we're playing against
the course, you can even play a par 3 course.
the exceptions being - miniature golf, and chip and putts, indoor
golf
and no video games !
So if during this year you are out playing and just happen to get
hot , the round won't be wasted enter it here and you may win !

Well using different tees on a 9 hole course still leaves me out.
The course is new, and the owner puts all efforts and money into
the construction of the back 9. The tee boxes sometimes are so
bad it can be the hardest shot of the round, and he only puts out
one set of tees for hte men. He won't be putting out the blue
tees until after the course is done.
Oh well, maybe next year.

| We have a 9 hole course that has two sets of tees for playing 18 holes.
There are 2 holes on each green and players rotate the pin between the
holes. What may have been a par 5, the 1st time around could be 4 the
2nd time around. A short par 4 could be a longer par 4 etc - etc. As
for putting, the pin may be in the the same hole for 1 or 2 holes but
wouldn't be for all of the last nine holes.

Hi Pete,
When I first read how some people were feeling lefft out if
they couldn't play 9 twice, I felt the same way... thinking
geeesh, you have until Nov 30th .
But then I know a lot of members of 9 hole courses that spend
almost the entire season playing their course... they shouldn't
be left out. However I still think there's an advantage to
playing nine twice. So Jacks idea of making an additional
category will solve the problem.
It sure is interesting running a tourny though :) !

To keep this simple, it sounds like you will be ignoring course and/or
slope ratings. But, I do have two other rule questions.
1.) Should scores be attested by a fellow Deccie?
2.) Are only USGA handicaps to be used in determining net scores?
I assume this is a strict honor system which everyone pledges to abide
by. ;-> Oh, yes - should we keep the score card for verification of
the "posted" scores?

HI Shane,
Everyone who wants to enter is qualified... there will not be
any rule that will eliminate a golfer from competing. It's OK
that you voiced your concerns, usually tourny's are run with
strict rules but this isn't one of them. I was surprised that
the initial rules didn't cover everyone, but they didn't, so
with no additional hassles we can simply allow another
category of 9 x2 . There will definitely be a bunch of golfers
(including Moi) that will post both an 18 hole score and a 9 x2.
So , in your case... since you don't have multi tee locations
on your course. Tee off at the tee's the first time around,
then step off ten paces closer/farther away from the tee boxes
the 2nd 9. That will be fine.
No problem;
thanks Walta

Hi Barry,
Good questions -
To answer your questions and others;
1. Do we need the scores attested?
- No. We are working on the honor system.
2. USGA handicaps?
- Any handicap is welcomed. If you don't have a handicap,
try to get some help in getting one. Find a golf league
representative, and use their method. It will be your
responsibility to keep the handicap up to date.
If you have a league handicap for 9 holes, simply double
it for your 18 hole scores.
3. Play the ball down?
- This will vary. Play by the local rules for the course at
that time. Sometimes at Monoosnock we play preferred lies
of 6" sometimes 1 club. Some courses are soooo nice
(Green Meadows) that they always? play them down.
4. Score cards for verification?
- No. Just reply to this note.

1130.26 | How course rating and slope figure into net score | BROKE::PAL | Paul Lemaire | Wed Jan 16 1991 14:38 | 29 |
| RE: <<< Note 1130.20 by SONATA::BBONNER >>>
-< Is it really as simple as it sounds? >-
>>> To keep this simple, it sounds like you will be ignoring course and/or
>>> slope ratings. But, I do have two other rule questions.
If you have a USGA handicap, you should look up the equivalent handicap
on a chart posted at the course(s) you play and you this to determine
your net score. For instance, my USGA Handicap Index is 24.6
At Amherst (NH) Country Club, my home course, this converts to a 26.
This conversion takes the slope and rating into consideration.
When I play at my father's home course, Montaup Country Club in
Portsmouth, RI which has a higher rating and slope, my handicap
goes up several stokes.
If you have a league handicap, only, but you always play at the same
course, you could use the same table to estimate your USGA handicap
index. A typical table might look like this:
Hcp Index Handicap
.
.
23.8 - 24.7 26
24.8 - 25.7 27
25.8 - 26.8 28
.
.
Thus, if your league handicap is 26 at this course, you could estimate
your USGA handicap index to be halfway between 23.8 and 24.7, say 24.3

| Hi,
This sounds like a great fun idea for the year, but out of interest
(mainly mine) I was surprised to see the volume of responses referring
to the 9 hole issue. The reason being that here in Scotland 9 hole
courses are rare and would really only be used by people learning
the game.
As i have never been lucky enough to play golf in the US,can someone
verify that there is such a high percentage of 9 hole and possibly,
if this is true, what the history is behind this situation.
i.e. Is it just lack of space ?
It is also a mystery to me how the US handicapping system works
in so much as it can vary depending on the course difficulty.
In my country your handicap is constant ,regardless of the course.
How does "slope" work ??
Would it be OK therefore for people this side of the pond to
participate in this tournament.
hope you can help

hole courses. There are several reasons for this, available land
within a city and expense of building a course are the main ones.
In my area, several of the courses that are 18 holes, began as 9
hole layouts. As golf grew in popularity these courses were expanded
to 18 holes. Most new courses here are being built as 18's now.
I guess that going around the course twice doesn't seem like much
of an inconvenience. Maybe a 6 hole course would be fun !!!! Three

advantage in that they can play all year round. Maybe it would be
fairer if we handicapped areas of the world similar to the USGA slope
system and therefore the Northeast would get a higher degree of
dificulty rate and a higher handicap for the tourney but then again
maybe a rest is helpful. Also I'm sure players outside of the Northeast

Just so that I know how hard I've got to chase Dan, are we saying that

I.E. par 34 Gross 39 Hcap 8 = Net 31 +5/-3
par 36 Gross 39 Hcap 8 = Net 31 +3/-5
So here is the second score better than the first? The above is where

| Mad Hacker rips Rancho Canada West for new personal best !!
Hi Walta,
Well, here is one to post for everyone to shoot at when their
courses finally open. Saturday Feb 9th, Rancho Canada West, Mad
Hacker fires new personal best of 83 during a digtial GOLF league
event. With my handicap of 22 for the course that puts me in with
a net 61 !!
Rancho Canada West, Carmel, Cal.
slope = 120
rating = 69.6
par = 72
yards = 6205
front =43 back = 40 tot=83 hdcp= 22 net= 61
I did win my flight, (by 9 shots !!) and also had low net (by 8 shots)
Probably will win sandbagger of the year for this one but I will take
it. This was my first round under 85 so I have attained my goal for 91.

I hope you wear a medium shirt, I already put my order in for the
shirt with the bulls-eye on the back with Walta.
Congrats on your round. A net 61 will be hard to beat. In my case
I would have to shoot 77, possible if I could play consistently for 18
holes. I either have a good nine bad nine or two bad nines. Haven't
solved the puzzle yet.

Hi Everyone,
Gee MH... you didn't waste much time taking Dan out! Guess you'll
have to fit into the medium tee-shirt I ordered for Dan ;) !
With that GREAT score you may need a bullet proof vest, it
should hold for quite a while... congratulations!
The good thing is we all have plenty of time to bump him off !
I'll be out next week ... so the leader board will get updated
when I get back, unless someone wants to do it?
If you do, just extract the old one, and update it with the new

Good luck,

Last time I recall a blunder when they said 3 - 6 was the blizzard of

were right on.

Hi John and evreryone else,
Running a tourny can be a dirty job....
John Heelan's GREAT score of -11 net, which would have tied him with
the Mad Hacker will not be counted . The reason being that he
was playing temperary greens and didn't put out all 18 holes.
I feel bad because temperary greens or not -11 net is awesome
shooting... but to be honest I didn't expect scores to be counted
if temperary greens were involved.
So to be sure; If anyone has posted a score up to now, and didn't
put out on every hole, please let me know ... that score will not
count.
sorry , but I feel it would be most fair ;

Can't remember, but should we consider the course rating as well?
Seems that a 3700 yard course up against a 6900 yard course should have
some equalizers such as rating. Maybe variance should be against
rating so that a 77 on a coursse rated 74 is better than a 77 on a
course rated 68 or even 58 in the case of most executive courses.

I make this observation from many unreturned phone calls from folks

Is anyone out there getting close to our leader. Maybe you need to have

I have been shooting some decent scores (for me), but nothing
close to the 78 or so I would need to recapture first place. Another
problem is my handicap is coming down (dropped from 18 to 16)which

| I'm not sure about the rules for this competition , but I had a 73 (+1)
in a tournament round ( no gimmies ...honest! ) on Easter Sunday.
It was on my home course here in Ireland, a par 72 course , 6400 yds
SSS = 71.
The SSS is the measure of difficulty used in Ireland. Your handicap
changes as a result of the SSS score - your Nett score.
My handicap is 8, so it would represent 6 under the SSS ( Standard
Scratch Score ).
My handicap will not change, though, as the competition was a fourball
and is thus non-counting.
Normally one doesn't hole out on all 18 holes in this type of
competition but in that case I did. My partner was having an off day.
I'll be interested to see if it counts for the DEC World Open.

Hi Madness,
You are right. My mistake... When playing an 18 hole course
there is no need to tinker with the handicap to avoid half
strokes.
Forinstance if someone has a 9 handicap for 18, they won't
be a 4.5 handicap when playing a 9 hole course... they will
loose the .5 and become a 4 .
But in Mike's case he is entitled to the stroke, because he was
playing an 18 hole course.
Sorry for the screwup!
I'll post the new leader board next.

| Walta,
On this side of the big pond 9 hole course are handicapped/indexed 1-18
also. Typically the odd numbers are on the "first" 9 and the even on
the back 9. Therefore, a 9 handicapper would have 5 shots for his first
nine holes, and 4 for the second nine. Therefore it is necessary to
know whether a good 9 was either first or second time round the course
during the play of the 18 holes.

Hi Sean,
Hmmm... I see your point. A 9 handicapper shouldn't loose a stroke
he/she is entitled to.
When it comes to an 18 hole course it's easy to handle odd numbered
handicaps, but with 9 hole courses it begins to get tricky.
I want to be fair to everyone. Can anyone tell me how you give
strokes to odd numbered handicappers, when they only play 9?
If forinstance a 9 capper was to play 9 holes in an after work
match... would he/she get 4 or 5 strokes?
thanks for the help,

| if you have an odd handicap (i.e. - 9) and only play nine
holes of an eighteen hole course, shouldn't your handicap
be one stroke for each of the 9 most difficult holes on the
course. If only three of those are on the 9 you play, you
get three strokes. If 6 of those 'hard' holes are on your
9, you get 6.
makes sense to me.

Hi Hack,
For an 18 hole course getting as many strokes as you
are entitled via the difficulty ratings will work great.
Does that also make sense for a 9 hole course? Maybe all 9
hole courses have the tees further back on the first 9,
which would make the odd capper get more strokes the first nine...
Well I guess I'll just leave it up to all of you to figure out
the strokes you deserve when playing 9 ... I'm sure those
who have odd numbered caps will come up with something fair.
sorry for all the confusion;

1130.88 | Round of my life! | MACNAS::SPOMPHRETT | | Mon Apr 29 1991 10:18 | 26 |
| On Sun. 28 April, in an 18 hole stableford competition on my home
course, I beat my best ever previous round by SIX shots. The course,
Athenry Golf Club in Galway, is a 9 hole one, par 34 per 9 giving par
68 for the 18.
I opened up bogey, double bogey, bogey, par double bogey. Just another
mediocre Sunday morning score, I told myself. Then I freaked out. Pars
on 6, 7, 8 & 9 brought me to the turn 6 over. Okay, now it was a
resonable round in prospect. But the second 9 beat everything I ever
did before: bogey, par, par, birdie, par, eagle, par, par, par.
Needless to remark my knees were shaking over the last three holes as I
struggled to keep the score together, but thankfully the holes all
seemed about 6 feet wide as I sank a 4 footer for par on 16, 15 footer
from 5 feet off the green for par on 17 and 12 footer for par on 18.
My handicap is (was) 13, so my scores for the 2 nines and the 18 were:
First nine : Gross 40, par 34, H'cap 7, nett 33 (-1)
Second nine: Gross 32, par 34, H'cap 6, nett 26 (-8)
18 ovearll: Gross 72, par 68, H'cap 13, nett 59 (-9)
I reckon this should get me on the leader board for a while!
I would like to say I don't like to boast, but, shucks, one can only
take modesty so far!!

| Hi,
Although I am not too proud of the score, I will enter it just
to make an entry in the Women's division.
I shot a 52 at Monoosnock yesterday. It's par 36 for women and
my handicap is 15 for nine. So, I shot 1 over par for net.

| Walta,
Here's another score to put the Europeans back in the game. Sean Pomphretts
score needs some support (!).
I made a par round yesterday (72) over a 6300 yd course in Ireland.
I'm playing off 8 so the nett isn't mapped !
Pity it wasn't a competition round, just a friendly money game with
fellow Deccies.

you, Mike?
It's nice to see that all the real talent is showing its roots, though.
Now if only we could have an all Irish team in the Ryder Cup..........
Nice to see new names appearing every week. Keep the scores coming, as
this is one of the most fun competitions in the whole calendar.

1130.130 | Does this work??? | TRACTR::OSBORNE | | Thu Jul 25 1991 14:58 | 9 |
| I'm not sure if this will work here but:
I know for USGA handi-capping 2 consecutive nines can be submitted for
averaging, well, I shot a 40 Tuesday and a 41 Wednesday, two different
nines, for a 81 with a new handi-cap of 26 this nets out to 55. This
was at Green Meadow in Hudson, NH. My personal best ever. No brag
just fact.

Hi Stuart,
Only 18 consecutive and different, holes played the same day can
be entered in the "Best 18" category.
However, you may have a pop at best 9 net? I don't know what
you meant when you said " with my new handicap "... so
if you could post your 9 hole net scores it'll help...
thanks

| Boy this competition is tough. I just shot a 77 on Stow South from the whites
with a handicap of 14. This is the first time I've ever broken 80 in my life!
Though I shot 39-38 I don't even make the DECworld Open leader board is any
category. My hat goes off to you all.

1130.135 | Double Bogey Blues | TECRUS::DEVERELL | | Wed Aug 14 1991 17:12 | 15 |
| Might as well clutter the best gross 18 until someone
shoots sub-par!
Last Sunday, Aug 11, I double bogied the 18th hole
at Triggs Memorial G.C. in Providence to match my
lifetime best 18 hole score of even par 72.
There I was, standing on the 18th tee, 2 under par
with 5 birdies in hand (my best ever) thinking
of a birdie on the last hole and breaking 70
when all of a sudden the right hand decides
to "get excited" causing the ball to duck-hook
under trees on the right.........the rest is
better left to the imagination.

| I play in the DEC league on Green Meadows CC in Hudson, NH. I just
shot my best 9 this year with a gross 39 on a par 36 course. With my
13 handicap (for 9, ugh) it gave me a net 26 for 9. Now if I can only
gain some consistency. :-)

With Don Romano's entry of -10 for best net for 9, that means
that I've witnessed both the low gross (for 9, Mook's 3 under) and low
net scores this year (to date). I'm better than a rabbit's foot!
Hey, available anytime, anywhere. Just pay my greens fee and you
