1111.0. "Clubs for Christmas-HELP!!!" by COBRA::BRYDIE (Do the Right Thing) Mon Nov 12 1990 23:15

My brother and I were talking about taking up the game next year
and I thought it might be a good idea to buy him a set of clubs
for Christmas. The trouble is since I don't play yet I have no idea
what kind of clubs to buy him or where to buy them. I'd appreciate
any help anyone in this conference can give. By the way he's a lefty,
he's never played before and I was planning on spending roughly
    $500.

If you do a dir/key=clubs you will find a lot of info on clubs and
    equipment in here...

If your brother has never played before I wouldn't go out and spend
a lot of money on clubs for him...! He may hate the game...! IMHO,
he/you would be better off renting clubs for his first few rounds
and buy a good used set from there if he decides he likes the game
enought to continue... If you are set on buying him a real good set
(which you can for $500) then purhaps a gift certificate might be
    in order...

Check out the for sale note in this file. I am selling my set of
    lefthanded clubs fairly reasonable...

I wouldn't spend a lot for a first set of clubs either. In fact, when
I first starting playing half seriously 8 or 9 years ago, I bought my
set at Caldors, paid about $150 which included a putter and bag. Play
with them for a couple of years first, to see if you want to continue.
Then go to a better, more expensive set if you want.
