| IRELAND win !!!
Our three stalwarts do the biz, and win $100,000 each, by beating
England in the final. It went to extra holes after the regular matches
were tied 3-3. Our captain played the third playoff hole, the notorious
17th at St Andrews, perfectly. He made four, whilst Englands Howard
Clark made a five.
Ireland beat Spain 2-1, then New Zealand 2.5-0.5 to reach the final.
England beat Scotland ,then beat Japan in the other semi-final.
Come on the boys in Green.

| Divot of the Month to the organisers of this one!
The England v Japan semi-final stood at 2-1 to Japan (one match won and
two halved), and the Japanese celebrating victory.
<set mode=cynical>
The organisers invoked the little known law that a team of 'unknowns'
are not allowed to play in the final, in case gate receipts go down.
In their wisdom they deemed that the halved matches were in fact
'undecided' and had to be played to sudden-death completion (to give
England a chance to redeem themselves).
Justice was not done and England won the playoffs, turning a defeat
into a 2-1 victory!
The bemused Japanese team declared that, although they would be happy
to return next year, they suggest the organisers review the rules of
the tournament.

| I made the same calculation and was equally astonished. But I was informed that
I - and the Japanese team - needed to review the rules: in the Dunhill Cup
you get *nothing* for a draw. So after the three matches Japan stood 1-0. That
is clearly 'undecided'.
Well, we live and learn,
