1094.0. "Swing Trainers" by CURRNT::ROWELLW (Mertilizer set to DEEP FAT FRY) Tue Oct 09 1990 07:06

    I have just come into possesion of an item called a 'Merlin Swing
    Trainer'. Unfortunately, it has no instructions with it, but it
    seems fairly obviouse how to use it.

    In case I am going to use it incorrectly, does anyone have one of these
    items, and can they post the instructions.

    Also, are they any good, or are they just a gimmick ?

    This is a two iron with a funny grip to it, as depicted below.

           _____
           \    \
    grip -> \    \
             \____\
              \   \
               \   \  <- grip
                \___\
                 \
                  \  <- club shaft

    I believe that the idea is to help you get the motion of the hands
    right, but I'm not totally sure.

1094.1I've heard of it !!RAYBOK::COOPEROne-ton Tomato !Wed Oct 10 1990 12:356
    I read an article last year in one of the golf mags that mentioned
    this training club. The theory is that with the hands seperated on
    the shaft, you are forced into using your hands properly through the
    ball. Sounds reasonable to me !

    Anybody see Bob Murphy demonstrate the training device designed to
    prevent you from looking up? It was on ESPN's coverage of the Las
    Vegas event this past weekend...

    In case you missed it, it was a hook "strategically placed," attached
    to a string that was attached to a head band. Murphy stressed that it
    wasn't a "sharp" hook, but it sufficed to get his attention. Nevertheless,
    he advised against such gimmicks. I was amazed they even showed this!

1094.4Yup, hard to believeDICKNS::F_MCGOWANMi ho sbellicato dalle risa.Mon Oct 22 1990 19:197
    It (the Bob Murphy demo of the "training device") was pretty amazing.
    When it was all over, he said to Jim Kelly, "I can't believe we did
    that." To which my wife retorted, "Neither can I!" I wonder how much
    mail ESPN got in response...

1094.5ASSIST club???SCAACT::ONAKABorn to GolfThu Oct 25 1990 22:2111
    Speaking of swing trainers has anyone out there used the
    ASSIST(All Season Self-Improvement Swing Trainers)?????

    I've seen it in the Golf Digest and several golf catalogs such as
    Golfsmith and Austads. It's got a double-bent shaft near the head and
    they claim it uses the principles of physical dynamics to ensure a
    correct swing.

    I don't know if this gadget will improve my game (I currently shoot
    high 70's to low 80's) but if anyone out there has used it I sure like
    to know their results.

    My roommate has an ASSIST....she had never touched a golf club
    before this year and feels that the assist has helped her with her
    swing. I've screwed around with it a little....it's a great check
    for your grip and hand position through the swing.

1094.8Another Merlin Swing TrainerMOLAR::MALONEYMon Oct 18 1993 14:068

    I was just given a "Merlin Swing Trainer" as described in .0,
    which means they sold 2 of them. I am also looking for
    instructions or advice about the gadget--what am I supposed
    to do with this thing? Swing it all winter? Has anyone found
    this to be helpful? Detrimental? Should I take the plastic
    training grip off and make an honest 2-iron out of it?
