| I looked for the latest issue (which was October) and I did not see the
Top 75 courses (I assume it is the Nov. issue)
Were there any listed for California (LA, Palm Springs, Long Beach) my
wife and I are going there next week.

FIRST 25
Pasatiempo Santa Cruz 6,483 yds par 71 green fees > $50
Sandpiper Goleta 7,053 yds par 72 green fees $25-50
SECOND 25
Desert Dunes Palm Springs 6,876 yds par 72 green fees > $50
Torrey Pines (So) La Jolla 7,021 yds par 72 green fees $25-50
THIRD 25
Ancil Hoffman Carmichael 6,794 yds par 72 green fees < $25
Moreno Valley Ranch, Moreno Valley 6,684 yds par 72 green fees $25-50
Torrey Pines (No) La Jolla 6,659 yds par 72 green fees $25-50
And I just spotted another course on the list that I've played,
Arrowhead in Littleton, Co. That makes three, one in the first 25, one
in the second 25 and one in the third. They're in three different
states as well.
California leads the list with 7 courses. Florida and Illinois are
next with 6 each. Then NC with 5 and CO with 4. In all, 30 states
have courses that made the top 75 in G.D.

I haven't had a chance to check out the whole list, but I have played these
two courses. They are definitely two of the best public courses I've ever
played.

I played at Richter Park in Danbury.
The course is excellent and they keep up the greens nicely. I would reccommend
it highly.

I've played the following:
1. Jackson Hole in Jackson, Wyoming. Top 25
Just outside the beautiful Grand Teton National Park (south of
Yellowstone). Beautiful setting, flat course. The majestic Teton
mountains rise in the distance and really screw up your depth
perception for judging distances.
2. Torrey Pines in La Jolla, CA. Site of the Andy Williams Open, now
the Izusu Open or whatever on the PGA tour.
The South course (the one you see on TV used for the final rounds)
is rated in the 2nd 25 and the North course is in the 3rd 25.
I actually preferred the North course. One of the best Muny courses
I've played.
3. Arrowhead in Littleton, CO. Just outside Denver. 3rd 25.
Everyone has seen pictures of this course, mostly in Golf Digest.
Large, red rock formations jutting out of the ground, all at the
same angle, towering above the course. The 13th hole, or maybe it's
the 4th - they keep switching the nines, is perhaps the most
picturesque hole you'll ever see. It's a par 3 teed up from the
cliffs and played thru rock formations to a green below you,
lake behind it.
4. Golden Ocala in Ocala, FL. About 60 miles north of Tampa. 3rd 25.
This course has several replica holes from Augusta National, Royal
Troon, St. Andrews and Baltastrol. Certainly the closest to the
original, and most recognizable replica hole is the par 3 12th from
Augusta. It even has the stone bridge over the pond. Not nearly
as cosmetically nice as the original, but the hole is layed out
the same and it's a thrill imagining you're playing the real thing.
I actually like the original holes at Golden Ocala better than the
replicas, although the replica holes are what everyone talks about
and remembers.

Heritage, Oyster Bay, and Marsh Harbour - all in/around
Myrtle Beach. Had a tee time at Torry Pines but played
36 at LaCosta instead.

My Golf Digest arrived last night, I guess the Wells Fargo Riders must
have been delayed. I am very lucky to have played 3 or the top 25, one
in the 2nd 25 and 3 in the 3rd 25. One, Ancil Hoffman, I have played
hundreds of times, since I lived within walking distance.
My list is:

Some time ago, I caught some flack for listing Edgewood Tahoe as one of
the outstanding golf courses that I had played, along with Harbour
Town. Someone agrees with me. Also, I was chided for wanting a
beautiful environment for my ideal course - all 7 of these courses are
exquisite in their settings! The defense rests.

| Well things have quieted down just a little here so I finally got to review
the GD public course list. I've played:
Cog Hill (#4)
Kemper Lakes
Pasatiempo
Sandpiper
One quick comment it does seem that the public list favors the new courses.
However the one's I've played I agree with their selection whole heartedly.
