1091.0. "ESPN's Mastering Golf" by BTOQA::SHANE () Fri Oct 05 1990 10:59

    Has anyone else seen ESPN's "Mastering Golf", hosted by Jonny
    Bench?

    It's pretty good. It features a different pro each week giving
    lessons to club members.

    I've seen it a few times and I've only seen them do portions of
    the short game, but it's nice to see someone who isn't an expert
    working through a shot. Something I can understand a little more.

1091.2[ignore the 'is it a different pro every week question?]DECXPS::WEWINGFri Oct 05 1990 16:3913
    i saw it once when i went home from work early.
    it is on before 5 p.m., i'm not sure of the time or day.

    the day i saw it they did 'longer drives', 'lies on hills',
    and 'chipping'.

    i've only seen it once. is it a different pro every week?

    p.s. - the 'average golfer' for the long drive segment was
    former cincinnati quarterback, kenny anderson. the other
    two average golfers were just plain folks.

1091.3Worth watching...DICKNS::F_MCGOWANMi ho sbellicato dalle risa.Sat Oct 06 1990 09:468
    The time I saw it, they had Bobby Clampett, who worked with three
    average duffers on putting, long sand shots, and tee shots. It seemed
    like a pretty well done show, but the last thing I need right now is
    more advice on how to play golf. I'm ready to heed Sam Snead's advice
    to one of his more inept students: "Lay off golf for a couple of weeks.
    Then quit."

    This may be a daft question, but what ever happened to Bobby Clampett?

1091.7Clampett no hickDICKNS::F_MCGOWANMi ho sbellicato dalle risa.Mon Oct 08 1990 21:207
    In spite of the spurious association with the Beverly Hillbillies,
    Bobby Clampett is (or at least, appears to be) a thoughtful,
    articulate, intelligent person, who's able to get his ideas across
    with clarity and conciseness.

    Yes, but what happened to his golf game?

    All I remember about him in the UK was those first 2 rounds in the 78(?)
    Open and his subsequent honourary membership of the "Doug Sanders I
    Blew the Open Club".

    I guess just being intelligent, thoughtful and articulate doesn't mean
    you'll be a great golfer (look at me, for instance ;>))...
