1052.0. "Still getting better with age..." by DICKNS::F_MCGOWAN (It's only semantics.) Thu Aug 16 1990 13:31

Take heart, all you over-the-hill hackers...there may still be time.
My 75-year old father-in-law shot a 79 (for 18) yesterday at his home
course (Petersham CC). The high point of the round was:

    		An ACE at the 8th!

Slightly uphill, 120 yards - he hit an 8 iron.

Admittedly, Steve's not the stereotypical 75-year old. He's got his
share of aches and pains, and his knee joints aren't what they used to
be, but he still hits it a ton (he's a solid 220 pounds, with massive
forearms). He's worked hard all his life, and his idea of a good time
(besides golf) is getting up at 4 A.M. to chop wood!

It's encouraging to me to know that with a little luck (and a good
diet and proper exercise), I could have over 20 years of reasonable
golf left. Maybe I'll even break 80 before I reach it myself.

I think that is great. Congratultions to him from an under 30 hacker
who wishes he could break 100 consistently

Tell him to come to my place, I'll give him all the fun he can handle
    :-)

My fathers 73 and carries a steady 12 handicap at his home course
    Pine Grove in Northampton Ma.
He drives the ball about 200 - 225 yds but is deadly around the
green with his chiping and putting. We don't get to play much
with me at the other end of the state but it's always a challenge
when we do. His key is a good diet and regular exercise.

1052.4It's wet at the grove until the middle of JulyWFOVX8::GUGLIELMO_TFri Aug 17 1990 13:347
I play pine grove quite a bit it is a tough little layout that reqiures
a mountain goat for the back nine(17 is 600+ mostly uphill).I am
    impressed.

ted Who's partner is 64 with a 20 handicap after a major heart
    attack and a triple bypass.

Sounds like there is alot of hope for me now that Frank has shared with
    me his Father's GREAT health/results!

My school boy dream was to be a married professional golfer. I got
married. Now, I would be very happy to be a married GOLFER at 75.

Re. -1: Right, Tom...I'm on the "back nine" myself (turning 55 in
October); so it gives me a real boost to be around someone like my
wife's dad, who is so youthful at over 20 years my senior. Of course,
he's been anything but office-bound and sedentary, having worked with
his hands all his life, and being an avid golfer, hunter and all-round
outdoorsman: he's not golfing this coming weekend, because he and some
of his friends are off to Ontario for a fishing expedition! He still
hits his drives in the mid-200 range, and has no trouble keeping up
with most of the "kids"; and his short game's in good shape too. I
should add, that he didn't take up golf until he was in his 30's.
