Dear Golfing Travel Agent,
My wife and I will be driving from Boston to Chicago in late August. We usually
do (did) this trip straight-through in about 18 hours. But, for a change of
pace, we thought that we might TRY to enjoy the trip a bit more this time.
Since there isn't really much to see right off any of the major interstates
getting from here to there (except for maybe Niagra Falls...but we've done that)
we thought that we should at least be able to find a MEMORABLE place to stop
and play golf. So, I thought, where better than in this Notes file could one
go to get such suggestions? ...I couldn't think of anywhere, so....
ANY SUGGESTIONS???
There are 3 routes that we could take, each of which overlaps with at least one
of the others at some point:
a) Take 90 from Boston, then 84 through Conneticut, N.Y., to
Scranton, P.A., then 80 through Penn., Ohio, Indiana, to Chicago.
b) Take 90 all the way (MA, NY, OH, IN, IL)
c) Take 90 to Buffalo, cut across Canada to Detroit (trans-Canadian
Hywy?), and then on to Chicago via 7x(?).
Actually, something in the middle of the trip would work out the best
(Western PA, Ohio, Indiana, or Canada, Michigan), but if there's someplace that
"just can't be missed" anywhere along this track, we're interested!

P.S. I assume we're all set for golf in the Chicago/Southern Wisconsin area
since the folks we are going to visit also golf.

Years ago, I played the 18 at Mount Airy Lodge in the Poconos.
It was modeled after Sports Illustrated's 18 best holes in the
U.S. I remember it as being very enjoyable. At the time, about
8 years ago, the course record was 71 but I have no idea who
played it, etc...
Not sure if it "really" is close to the best 18 or they just
started out with good intentions.
Very nice place to stay besides!!

| Sagamore in Bolton's Landing (Lake George, West shore) is GREAT !
Closer to your route are Leatherstocking in Cooperstown, N.Y. and 7
Oaks at Colgate University (both meet my standards - 7 Oaks will
absolutely wear you out; in fact they had the Div. 1 NCAA tournament
there).

| I agree, Jack, Seven Oaks at Colgate is a truly fine golf course,
albeit a tough course. And I'm not only saying that because I went to
school there :).

| Me too. I forgot to mention in my initial note that it's in Hamilton,
N.Y. I must have destroyed a few too many gray cells while I was a
"Red Raider."

| I just returned from Michigan and on the way back stopped for the night
off rt 90 (2nd 490 exit heading east - rte 96) and ended up in a lodge
which had a 90 couples package which included golf and breakfast, pool
and health club - very nice - called the lodge at ???woodcrest??. take
right at exit; < 2mi on right up hill past condos (which border
course). course is exectutive, very tight with small greens and short.
In London Ontario I passed a RELAX inn about 10 mi east of London exits
on 401 which had a course nearby (flat) and right at the 401/402
meeting I saw another course (yes I had stayed in London off Wellington
rd and read for 2 1/2 hours while wife and baby slept not knowing
the course was there - c'est la vie.
I can get the name of the Rochestor Lodge if you are interested. Also
you might try taking 402 thru Sarnia Port Huron then 69/96/196 route to
Chicago - there are mucho nice courses in West Michigan (Grand Haven,
Sasketoon in Grand Rapids area for ex).

Bill, me too. I just got in about 2 hours ago. While I was out in Michigan
I found out that the public can get on Glen Abbey (which is where they
play the Canadian Open). It's in Oakville which is north of Hamilton.
Given the length of the trip between Boston & Michigan I think the detour
would be quite worth it.
Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to play it due to previous commitments.
(If I could have gotten and early tee time I would have done it, but the
earliest time they could get me out would have been 1:00). Next time it
will definitely take us 2 days to drive to Michigan.
