1029.0. "Cohasset/Plymouth Courses?" by ATPS::MILLER () Tue Jul 24 1990 14:12

Looking for information on golf courses in the Cohasset/Plymouth
area. Prefer something suitable for family play preferably with
riding carts available. Either 9 or 18 hole layout is ok.

    	Any information available?

Try Green Harbor in Marshfield. Good condition and a pretty easy
layout. I believe you can get tee times on weekends.

If you want something more challenging, go to Pembroke CC. It's
semi-private, so you can get out in the PM.

I agree with the last note. Green Harbor has "Vesper Bent" greens,
courtesy of Manny Francis. Halifax C.C. is pretty good too, and Poquoy
Brook to the East in Lakeville is REAL good. Pine Oaks is a worthwhile
(at least by my standards) 9 holer in Easton. Easton C.C., however
(which is right next door) sucks. The two best I've played in that area
are Thorny Lea in Brockton, and Plymouth C.C. Both are private, but if
you call Plymouth during the week and tell 'em you're a Donald Ross
freak and love the Hornblower tournament, it might get you on...
I forgot North Hill in Duxbury and Duxbury Yacht Club (latter is
private, but give them a call - better yet, have your Pro call).

This one may be a bit far, but you can try Norton CC. It's a new
course with a tough layout. I heard the MGA just sloped the back tees
at 137. The greens haven't quite come in yet though.

As an addition to the last reply, Thorny Lea and Halifax are both
    private.

    Jack,

Glad to see someone else plays courses on the South Shore. It gets
pretty lonely in this notes file sometimes. I agree with your
preference of Pine Oaks over Easton Airport... er I mean CC. (I'm a
member of Pine Oaks). Drop me a note if you ever want to get together
    for a round down south.

If you can't get on Poquoy Brook, (because of no tee time), try
Reservoir Heights. It's a great course, can get on easily during the
week, busy during the weekend. It's only about 10 minutes from Poquoy.

How about Pembroke CC? TOUGH course, semi-private. Should call first.

1029.5More on Courses Plus Heritage HillWAV13::MURPHYRThu Jul 26 1990 15:0440
o We have managed to play Plymouth CC several times during this season.
(In fact it has been easier geeting out there then on my home course
(Poquoy Brook)). Just give them a call and don't expect a morning time.
The pro shop staff had no qualms about non-members. The course isn't
the best for condition but it is an unmistakeable gem for design and
old-style. Some incredibly tough holes in a beautiful setting.

o Word is that Halifax CC is so private that you can't get on at all
    anymore.

o With apologies to Smitty I believe that Reservoir Heights is
dangerous given today's golfing public. (The original nine holes were
perfect and fit into the land available but they had to make it 18
holes on virtually the same amount of land - bring your helmets.)

o Poquoy Brook offers the most consistent conditiond and is arguably the
best public course in the state. Late afternoon tee times on the weekend
are easily obtained and mid-week play is available at most times of the
    day.

o No one mentioned Heritage Hill CC in Lakeville. Although this is a
par 3 course it is both well conditioned and challenging. Good for
family golf if that is your desire.

o Norton CC is an exciting layout composed of the old nine holes of
Norton with nine more designed (I believe) by Brain Silva. When the
greens finally come in (this is year #2) this course will be
incredible. The course has many holes that require play over natural
waste areas (read bogs and shrubs). Fairways are scultured/contoured
rather than straight line cut which is visually more pleasing. Bring
some extra golf balls. This is also a private club but tee times for
    afternoon rounds are obtainable.

o Easton CC is fairly wide open with water often coming into play. It
is a private club with public course conditions. Take it for what it
offers - there are worse courses out there.

Does anyone know if South Shore CC still exists? Did that get plowed
    under recently?

1029.6Thanks for the inputs!ATEIS::MILLERThu Jul 26 1990 15:427

Thanks very much for all the input. We have calls into several of
your suggestions for play next week. Initial effort will be at
North Hills which answered the phone first and had a warm up tee
time available for tomorrow afternoon. Hope the rain stops for a
    	while!

1029.7TRY SCITUATE COUNTRY CLUB !!!FSOA::JMARIANOMon Jul 08 1991 16:5125

Try Scituate Country Club. 91 Old Driftway, Scituate, Ma.

I, along with my two Brothers-in-law bought the course in
March. Its only a 9-hole course today but we are looking to
expand with the town's help. Also, currently irrigating greens
and tees so fairways need help with the lack of water this year.

However, it is a very tough course with small greens.

Call the pro-shop and mention you would like the Digital
discount. That will entitle you to pay the member guest green
fee. (18.00 instead of 22.00 for 18 holes).

We are also open on Monday to the public.
