1024.1 | This one's for the yeller's | CIMNET::CAFE | | Mon Jul 23 1990 14:26 | 11 |
| Seems my game has picked up 5-7 strokes after consecutive weeks
of good golf.I seem to be way off on the approach shots latley.
this creates an additional stroke to now chip the ball which
also can go wrong.Somehow I think if just keep playing it will
come back in it's own time.

1024.2 | 4 over through 7 , 8over through 8 !! | RAYBOK::COOPER | MAD HACKER | Mon Jul 23 1990 14:39 | 14 |
| I played in a tourney yesterday and my new short game was working
well !! I was 8 over on the front side and 4 over through #16. I
tee the ball on 17, hit it off the hosel 50 yards dead left into a
bush, take an unplayable, 5-wood to the middle of the fairway, decide
to layup with a 9 iron due to a pond in front of the green but I top
the ball and it slices off over a mound !!! I find it tight against
the backside of a huge tree in the right rough !!! Ok, no problem, I
miss-hit the pitch away from the tree and it goes about 20 feet. I'm
now about 125 from the green so out with the 9 iron again and this time
I hit fat and it goes about 30 yards !!! Getting pretty steamed but I
hit a pretty nice wedge to about 8 feet and two putt !! A real nice
9 on my card. The woes of a hacker !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1024.3 | ...And unenlightened as well! | FRICK::NANCYZ | | Mon Jul 23 1990 14:46 | 7 |
| As a woman who plays golf right along side her husband and loves it, I
can't believe I'm reading a statement in this day and age that says ..."if
their women would let them play more....".
Maybe if your attitudes toward women changed, your golf game would
improve as well! You didn't really think you could get away with a
statement like that now did you??

1024.4 | Let me play ?? | RAYBOK::COOPER | MAD HACKER | Mon Jul 23 1990 15:08 | 6 |
| My girlfriend doesn't "let me play" ! We both have time to
do things that we enjoy doing and don't mind being apart for
several hours to do those things, whatever they may be. We also
do many things together.

RELAX!
That was not a put-down on women. It is just my experience with
my girlfriend and others that many women frown upon their male
companions' time on the golf course. I am sure you're a very nice
person and am happy you enjoy this sport. But, maybe you should
change you woman-liberated views, to realize that not all men are
against women on the golf course, etc.!
Mad Hacker-
If you could send me some input on having my girlfriend's hostility
lifted. Lucky for you, yours is so understanding. There are many
things I do without her, but golf to her and my friends' girlfriends,
is TABOO!

| Hey Hackers!
If your looking for a place to play cheep, try Heritage C.C.
in Charlton. From 7-10 AM you get 18-hole greens fees, a cart,
lunch and a beer for $18. It's a nice public course, especially
if you usually play a place like Green Hill.
Another nice course is Wachusett C.C., a liitle expensive, but
probably the nicest public course I've played. CAUTION - the owner
can be a real !@#$, so watch yourselves.

| Nancyz -
I felt the same way when I read the statement.
Chris, your not the only one that comes out with comments like that.
I read it in this notes file and hear it on the golf course all the
time. I'm not talking about men not wanting women on the golf course
but about men trying to come up with different ways to get the wife/
girlfriend to let them go out and play. I really feel sorry for you
and the others who have to beg to go out. My husband and I just spent
a wonderful weekend up at Stratton, Vermont playing golf (celebrating
out 3rd wedding anniversery). I love the sport as much as him. I'm
the one who suggested a golf weekend for our anniversery (last year
we celebrated by playing at Waterville Valley/Jack-O-Latern - we met
skiing at Waterville Valley).
I know I would hate to have to beg to go out skiing or golfing or
whatever. I'm just very glad that I married someone that shares
my interests. It makes life so much easier! B-)

1024.9 | Since we are talking about spouses and golf anyway | PEAKS::WELLS | | Tue Jul 24 1990 13:56 | 29 |
| I have to admit, there are a lot of MCP's in this notes file. Being male
myself I can probably say that without someone accusing me of being bias.
If your wife won't let you play golf it's probably not because it is golf
you are playing. If she is your spouse or girlfriend, she most likely wants
to be considered at least as important as your game. If you are spending
more time away than with her, it doesn't matter what the reason is, she
will resist.
In my case, with 2 kids under three, we have little time together as it is.
Let's face it, time on the golf course is rare no matter how you slice it.
I signed up for a shortage on free time by myself when I decided to have
2 kids (at least for the early stages). Little did I know at the time I
would pick up a time consuming sport like golf at the time. But I wouldn't
trade time with my kids and wife for anything in the world (they're great).
I picked up golf just this season and was hooked almost immediately. In
self-defense, my wife picked up the game too. We play 9 holes once a week
if we're lucky. Not surprisingly, she likes the game too. It is a pleasent
relaxing time together.
The only problem is that since we are both beginners, our play is kind of
slow. We try to pick less crowded times to play so we don't hold people up
too much. Any other suggestions out there?
When we are old and grey and the only thing that's important to us is eachother,
we will still have golf.

1024.10 | more women should play... | MB300E::MICHAUD | | Tue Jul 24 1990 13:58 | 20 |
|
My wife just started golfing...first time out ever was on the 4th of July...
she's been hooked ever since. She's a natural at the game...posted a 58 on
her 3rd time out and a 54 on the next day...no lessons or anything...just a
few basic instructions on grip, stance and swing (I still can't get over how
easy it's coming to her...200 yd drives no less). Get this...she goes out
with a friend yesterday and shoots a 63...not so good right?...turns out she
shot a 16 on the 5th (couldn't get out of a trap)! I said, honey, next time
give it 2 or 3 tries, then pick the ball up and toss it onto the green...sheeese
She's taken the golf bait...hook, line and sinker! Out 3 times in the past
3 days. It's great, I go out with the boys in the morning and get another
round in with her in the afternoon.
Moral of the story: If the woman (or man) in your life can't relate to
your golf addiction, get them out there with you and you may end up playing
twice as much.
jon (who's ego has taken quite a blow and will have to spend a fortune on
lessons and greens fees just to keep up with his novice wife)

1024.11 | Lucky 'Ol Me! | CHEFS::NEWPORTP | | Wed Jul 25 1990 08:34 | 27 |
| Mine's also now an addict!!
My wife started playing just over a year ago and now just wants
to play more and more. I love it.
A little story...
We went to Ireland to play golf in June and played Waterville,
Tralee, Killarney and Ballybunion. Great time, etc. Anyway on coming
home and visiting the in-laws, My wife is asked "So are you going
to take a holiday in the sun later in the year?" Imagine the surprise
when I hear my Sun-worshiper come out with "Well to be honest I'd
like to go and play golf again". You could have knocked me down
with a sand wedge!!!
So anyone who's having problems with their men or women understanding
keep working at it....good luck.
Looking forward to Myrtle Beach in '91.
Phil.

| After avoiding it for a season and a half, my wife seems ready to
rejoin the legions of harried hackers, which makes me very happy. It
means she and I will again be able to share the joys and frustrations
of the good game. The thing is, she's got a really great swing...it's a
crime against nature for someone with a swing so good *not* to play
golf! But the season before last, she got a little down on herself,
after making good progress - hit a little slump and got to the point
where she chose to avoid playing, which led to some difficulty getting
back into it. I kept telling her I wouldn't encourage her to play if I
didn't think she had the talent, and after taking a lesson from the pro
in Maine a couple of weeks ago, she's ready to put on the spikes this
Saturday and let 'er rip! I'm only hoping she hits her share of solid
shots, so she won't put the clubs back in the closet...she's my
favorite partner, on and off the course. And when she connects, she can
really hit it!

A true hacker SELDOM breaks 100...When they do, something strange,
yet wonderful is happening. Sort of like birth.
Once a hacker consistantly breaks 100, they are on their way to losing
their "Hacker's Card." Sort of our version of the Tour Card.
Once someone starts to break 90, they are no longer a true Hacker.
Mad Hacker, you and I are about to lose our cards..

| Well, teach me to improve my game !! Ultimate Bagger ?
Defendant ?? After 4 years of hacking my way around the
links, my game is finally coming together so all you
guys can just bite my behind !!!!! Gee Jack, I shot 116
at the Fox just 3 months ago, had a 102 at Summitepointe
last week. I have posted all the low (and high) scores
i have been shooting of late but as long as the index
lags behind, you had better believe I'm going to take
full advantage of it !!! I haven't given up my Hackers
card yet, but if this keeps up I guess I'll have to !
Remember, another curse of the Hacker is inconsistency !!

I gotta play at the Fox this weekend, and the way I've been hitting it
on the range this week, 116 sounds pretty good.
