1022.0. ""YOU'RE THE MAN!!!"" by COMET::PINAR () Thu Jul 19 1990 20:45

Well, I really glad the British Open is on this weekend and I
can be spared the ridiculous and obnoxious 'YOUR THE MAN'!!!
screams after one of the leaders hits a drive...

I don't know about how others feel about this "new rage" to
yell this after a shot. To me it just makes that person sound
like a drunken baseball fan yelling at Jose Canseco with the
bases loaded from the upper deck, only thing is - we can hear
them LOUD AND CLEAR with the tee mikes. And what really tops
it off is when say Jack duck hooks one...

If that happened to me I'd probably tell the jerk to maybe watch
where the h*ll the ball is going before he tells me "I'm the man!"

Oh well, just a new pet peeve of mine 8')

                                             Bill

I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOUR OBVIOUS FRUSTRATIONS ON IGNORANT GOLF
    COMMENTS.

OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS GOLFING CROWDS HAVE GOT INTO THIS RIDICULOUS
    HABIT.

MY PET HATES ARE COMMENTS AT 400 + YARD HOLE TEE SHOTS. :-

    1. "BE THE RIGHT CLUB "

    2. "GET IN THE HOLE"

HOW THE PROS MAINTAIN THEIR COOL AMAZES ME.

COMMENTS LIKE THESE ARE ALMOST SARCASTIC.

DO GOLFING SPECTATORS ON THE US TOUR FEEL A NEED TO BE HEARD ?

IT WAS NOT ALWAYS LIKE THIS.

BRING BACK THE OLD DAYS OF APPRECIATIVE CROWDS.

    REGARDS

1022.2Larry Bird's responseMAMIE::CYRFri Jul 20 1990 08:5410
If anyone had a chance to watch the "Greg Norman Challenge" last
weekend, they heard the perfect reply to this stupid "you're the man"
    comment.

I forget which hole it was, but after Larry Bird hit a shot someone
yelled the phrase, and Larry, being the tactful person he is, responded
    with "SHUT UP".

All four players were miked, so it was very obvious to hear the reply.
There was even applause to Larry's comment.
1022.3JOHN - 5:10-10:1029381383DNEAST::STEVENS_JIMFri Jul 20 1990 11:2019
    I saw that..It was great.

Whilst we're on this aggravating verbage, I really hate those
folks who walk around, in front of people, in general trying to
be seen on TV, with JOHN-5:13, or some over religous phrase.

I'm not criticizing their right to free speech, I am criticizing
the way they blantantly jump in front of cameras, crowd people out
so they can stand right behind a player on camera, and just generally
figure "I am making a religous statement. I can do what ever God wants
    me to."

Fiesty today. I just criticized people in the plant wearing shorts and
    tank tops.

    Fore.

I cant agree more. What's interesting is how the cameramen will close
in on the players to take the signage out of view. They will give you a
close-up of Curtis' nostril trying to cut out John 1:11.

None of that going on at the Open.

I believe "GET IN THE HOLE" originally derived from basketball (I heard
    it in early 70s).

Perhaps (re .1) its not a need to be heard but a heed to be nerds

1022.8Some are jerks, some are anti-jerksWSINT::MARKEYWookin' Pa NubFri Jul 20 1990 15:4113
As amazed I am at how much the spectators can be jerks, I'm always
amazed at how many pro golfers are really great people.

I was standing at the 1st hole at Pleasant Valley last week, and Brian
Tennyson was waiting to tee off. I was up in the front, next to "the
rope", and he just walked over and says "Hi. How's it going?". I was
flabbergasted. I'm not the boisterous spectator type, and this just
floored me. I rooted for him the rest of the tournament ... (which did
him no good, but what the hell?)

1022.9YOUR THE WOMAN !!!RAYBOK::COOPERMAD HACKERFri Jul 20 1990 20:026
It reached a peak for me while watching the Women's Open last
weekend after a Pat Bradley drive ! From the gallery I heard,
"YOUR THE WOMAN !!" I think she was 3 over at the time and
    hitting the ball poorly.

"You're the women!" - Oh man...that pretty much takes the cake..!
I'm sure it's really only the big mouth types that are yelling this
crap out. And, I'm also fairly sure that they are not even
particularly rooting for that player, rather, they are just trying
to draw some attention to themselves.

    Picture this scenerio=

"Honey, I'm going to be at the International golf tournament this
Saturday, you will have to watch for me. Will you also record it
on the VCR for me so I can watch when I get home."

(now, where at home later that evening...)

"Honey come here...! Listen to this. (Greg Norman rips a tee shot)

    "YOU'RE THE MAN!!!!"

"Did you hear that honey,..that "You're the man!" ??? Well, try to
keep your clothes on, but...that was ME yelling that!!! Aren't you
    impressed!"

(wife) - Oh, Darling, '*YOU'RE* THE MAN'!!! I'm sooo turned on!"

    ha ha ha......!!!

    I can just see it........

Wish I would have seen Larry Bird tell that guy to shut up. Missed
that one. Was giving the remote quite the work out that day...all 3
netorks had golf on. Wish the wife would have been home, would have
    drove her absolutely nuts!!! 8')

    We've got it here too!!!

When Faldo played his approach to the 18th on Sunday,I heard the
"Get in the hole" from the gallery.

Suggestion: anyone caught shouting stupid comments like that should
be put in the hole...HEAD FIRST!!

I don't know... I think some of you guys are over-reacting. As long as
nobody interfers during the shot, what the heck.... let um get excited
and say what they want... I mean.. to each their own... NO ?

I mean... what are you supposed to say ...

Sayings like 'hit a house'... which is said when your putt is obviously
going way by the hole, with NO CHANCE OF STOPPING, is as silly as 'In
    the hole' ....

1022.13SQGUK::NOCKHello Mum!Tue Jul 24 1990 15:3314
It does get a bit nauseating though doesn't it.

Imagine the scene at other sports -

"It's a goal!!!" every time someone kicks the ball
    "Touchdown!!!" at every scrimmage

I mean, if all they want to do is shout something stupid, the quality
of the play doesn't seem to matter. Why bother forking out the money to
go to the Open? Why not just go down the local municipal, and see how
long it is before they get 5 iron shoved.... ;-)

The worst thing is the more important the tournament the more likely
you are going to find these idiots. Where are they during the K-mart
Classic? The only exception is the Masters where the crowd is limited
& long time spectators who appreciate the game.

1022.15HOW BOUT', hmmm, maybe...NICE SHOT!COMET::PINARWed Jul 25 1990 01:2419

      I don't think it's "overreacting." I don't think anyone would really
have a problem if it was said on occassion when the situation warranted
an "IN THE HOLE" or "YOU'RE THE MAN"...but what I see more and more of
is that these morons yell it before they can even possibly get a
glimpse of the direction of the ball.
I also heard the "IN THE HOLE" on Faldo's last iron shot into 18. I
didn't really find that bothersome at all...Now if a certain few were
yelling it throughout the whole round, it gets annoying...
Call me old fashion (at 27), but just give me the ole' applause and
cheers for the good shots and a subtle gallery moan and groan for the
snap hook! Let's give em' the "You're the man's"! while he's walking
to the next tee box and we're in the kitchen fixin' a sandwhich!

     /Bill

I must agree with those who find this annoying (just as "in the hole!"
is on any shot longer than 50 yards). But if you think "You're the man"
is bad, then you weren't watching a televised LPGA event two weekends
ago, when some guy in the gallery (sounded like the same guy, in fact)
yelled "You're the woman!" as Betsy King hit her tee shot. Fair's fair,
I suppose. My guess is it's somebody who's got his VCR going, recording
the match, and wants to be able to tell his friends "That's me" when
he plays the tape back for them.

There at it again. Another year, another "Your the Man" and "Go in the
    Hole"

I was watching the Seniors yesterday on ESPN and heard "In the Hole"
everytime Dale Douglas hit his approach shot. On 17 a par three I heard
"In the Hole" and he MISSED THE GREEN! What are these folks watching?

Maybe Deane Beman will impose some rules on spectating. Q-School for
    the gallery?
