1002.0. "Fairway woods..in the WOODS!" by JUPITR::OTENTI () Thu Jul 05 1990 15:53

     I have a question that someone is bound to be able to answer for me..
    seems that whenever I have to use my 3 or 5 wood off of the fairway I
    slice the shot something wicked!..The 5 slices much worse than the 3
    but still they both go!..

    1) Am I standing in the correct place?
         i stand with ball just behind my front foot.

    i can use my driver off the tee without much problem but using
    the other woods..i slice them off the tee also..

    irons..are fine..

    anyone have any idea why i'm killing my par 5 game with these
    sliced shots?

    thanks
    al

1002.1Move the Ball...ASABET::J_REIDThu Jul 05 1990 16:487

          I would try moving the ball a little more back in you stance. I
    had the same problem for a while, but it has cleared up after doing it.

1002.2Ball Position !!RAYBOK::COOPERMAD HACKERThu Jul 05 1990 17:426
    Re. -1
       I agree with the ball position hint. I have great success with
    my 5-wood and I play the ball almost in the middle of my stance.
    I play the 3-wood just a little further up.

1002.3Relax and pretend you have a 7-iron in your hand...LEDS::OBRIENRThu Jul 05 1990 18:550
1002.4Relax!SIOG::OGRADYFri Jul 06 1990 07:5811
    Yeah, relax!!
    I think ball position is important but from my own troubles on the
    fairway i think that there is a big tendency to try and burst the
    fairway woods. After all, you are usually a long way from your target
    and you obviously want to get as close as possible.

    So swing like you're cosying in a smooth 7-iron and i think you'll
    be amazed with the result. The fairway woods can be very valuable
    at times.

1002.5hit it ssuare!!!!!!CIMNET::CAFEFri Jul 06 1990 09:4211
    Your right hand may not be turning over enough,
    Place ball just inside left foot and do not reach for the ball.
    Take a practice swing and stop abruptly just before striking the
    ball, your club face could be opening up on you;if so,turn your
    right hand over a little,try the practice swing again and see
    if the address holds  square..
    then swing 85% and let it fly

                                                          RICK

1002.6Experiment with a ProAKOV11::FEENEYnon golfers live half a lifeFri Jul 06 1990 10:3913
    Somthing is keying you to tense up or to swing differently. Try at a
    range to experiment to see if you can isolate what you do and or feel
    different when placing the wood on the fairway versus a tee. Best still
    have a pro watch you swing a fairway wood versus an iron. Also pay
    particular attention to the divot. I find If I'm not extremely careful
    in executing my swing technique properly I will tend to hit my fairway
    wood outside in (divot is to the left) and my shot will go left, right
    or straight depending on the happenstance of where the face is at the
    time of impact. Irons with a little attention to technique will have
    a divot heading for the pin although the club face is not correct all
    too often.

1002.7Are Drive and 3,5 all same model?SIOUXI::BREENFri Jul 06 1990 17:3610
    My problem has been the opposite - hit fairway woods 3 and 5 well but
    slice the driver off the tee. My 3 and 5 are Spalding Execs and I have
    a Prima driver.

    I ended up swinging differently and addressing the ball differently
    depending on whether I was hitting driver or fairway woods.

    If driver is different model than 3,5 then that may be root of the
    problem.

1002.8What happened to the driver?GUESS::BLACKMANFri Jul 06 1990 18:528
	Re .7: I swing Spalding Exec's for my 3 and 5 metalwoods, and a Taylor
Made Tour Preferred for my driver. I can hit both good and bad shots with any
of the clubs, and my swing is such that I fade almost as often as I draw.

	Except for one weird day, I never could hit the Exec driver. First it
quacked (dove left), and then it cracked (internally, minor, but some parts of
the casting started to rattle around in the head cavity). Is any of this like
familiar?
1002.9Rattling Drivers !!RAYBOK::COOPERMAD HACKERFri Jul 06 1990 19:348
    re. -1
       Funny you should mention the rattling head ! I used to use a Prima
    driver but I hit it real hard one day and it started rattling when I
    shook it. I thought they were foam filled so was really surprised when
    this happened. It didn't seem to effect the performance of the club
    but I kept waiting for the face to cave in or something !!!!

1002.10Hook + Draw Fade + SliceNEWVAX::FS71RS. Va. District CS EngineersTue Aug 07 1990 13:1213
    With a driver I line up the ball with my Left heel, with the 5 wood I
    line the ball up with the middle of my stance, so when I use my 3 wood
    I line the ball up in the middle of those 2 positions. Also what is
    your lie. If the lie is above your feet and you address the ball as if
    the lie was at the same height as your feet you will slice. Go to a
    driving range take out your driver and hit the ball with it positioned
    in the middle of your stance. Nice slice huh? as you move the ball up
    closer to your front heel the slice will diminish until it goes
    straight. If you keep moving the ball past your front heel it will
    start to hook. so ball position is very important as to whether you
    want to play a draw a fade or a straight shot with any club in the bag.
