| It's not really clear (to me) how the Skins participants are picked,
but my cynical self suspects TV ratings are probably a key factor, and
that colorful players will be chosen over less-colorful, regardless of
who's won which tournaments...this is, after all, a made-for-TV event.
I'd say Greg Norman is almost a cinch to be there, no matter how he
fares in tournaments between now and then.
The term "skin" probably comes from the vernacular of hunting, and
refers to "skinning" one's victims (in this case, the other three
players). Just a guess.

| Anybody watch this year's skins game? Azinger sure got testy with the
crowd. I think he was irritated that he didn't get any skins.
Darn shame about Palmer missing that eagle chip for a skin. It would
have been nice to see him pick up a chunk of change. Freddy was online
with his putts. Uncle Payne just came through again.

ya... Couples pulled off a few looooong putts to take potential
$$ and skins out og Palmer's pocket. Arnnie had a few chances,
but missed the putts when he needed them. The Zinger never really
had a clear cut chance for a skin... that I saw... but I didn't see
it all. Paine played great, and Fred played equally good at times,
but did loose a couple of shots.. where he ended up picking up.
I missed Daly... would have been much more interesting with him out
there... especially since this was a short course.. They were shooting
for the green on more than one PAR 4.... from the tee! I think Daly
would have lucked into some fine long shots... and taken some skins.

995.6 | Time to cancel it... | CHRLIE::HUSTON | | Tue Nov 30 1993 08:10 | 17 |

Basically I think it is time to cancel the skins game. This years
was BORING, they need personalities out there. Stewart was the
only one with potential for fun talk. Azinger and Freddie, though
excellent golfers, are to quiet for a thing like the skins
game. As for adding Arnie in for Daly. Nice try, but he was outclassed,
I thought he was gonna hurt himself he was swinging so hard off the
tee. I do feel bad for him being shutout, but them's the breaks.
They need players with character to play up to the camera and give
each other a fun/hard time to make this worth watching. Daly may have
added some fun to it, but I still don't think he has the personality
to pull it off. It takes the likes of people like Chi Chi, Trevino
etc to get the crowd going.

| Bob, I agree. I grew up watching Arnie - I loved the guy - but having a
64 year old guy in this thing makes no sense. He played well, but
there's no percentage. Plus, I hated the golf course - only watched a
few holes.

I agree with the last couple and have a solution to make it a lot
more fun to watch. Make them play with their own money. Not much
joking around but a heck of a lot more enjoyable (for us, anyway!)

995.9 | Would have been nice for Arnie to get at least a skin. | NACAD::NISKALA | When will it all end? | Tue Nov 30 1993 10:51 | 6 |
| I think Daly would have fared miserably on Big Horn. He hits long
but how often does he hit the fairway or relatively close to it? This
was target golf as they stated and I think most of the targets long
John would have been hitting would have been cacti!
The Seniors Skins will be more enjoyable with Chi Chi and Trevino
to spice things up in spite of Nicklaus and Floyd...

Makes no sense? Maybe not to us, but to IMG who put the event
on and also just happens to manage Arnie...
Their own money - even alot less - would be great! I'm sure
there are 4 guys out there would sign up.

Thought I remembered seeing Arnie among the cast, with Trevino,
Nicklaus, and Floyd....

995.12 | needs fun players | TPTEST::MOOK | Where are you between two thoughts? | Tue Nov 30 1993 12:37 | 15 |
| I agree that it has gotten boring.
In the beginning years it seemed like a big deal when one of them had a putt or
made one for 6 figures but now with all the money out there on tour, its lost
its charm. Plus these guys are gabillionares anyway, they don't need the money.
I think charities should be getting all of it instead of %20.
The only thing that will save this event is if they invite 'fun' personalities.
Get rid of the senior event also and have 2 players from that tour play with
2 players from the regular tour. Ideal foursome:
Chi Chi, Trevino, Fuzzy, Jacobson.

Well, Arnie must be a lot of fun to play with, and he is fun to root
for, but he was definitely outclassed by the younger golfers. The
problem is that the perfect skins player must not only be a "fun"
golfer, he must be a "big" name (sorry Peter Jacobson), play with a lot
of passion/emotion, and be a risk taker to really make it interesting.
My vote for the ideal skins group would include: Norman, Seve, Fuzzy,
and probably Woosman.
