992.0. "81st Massachusetts Open Results" by WOODRO::WENTZELL (The Wheel is turning...) Thu Jun 28 1990 14:01
Fran Quinn, Jr. won the 81st Massachusetts Open yesterday by 1 stroke
finishing with a 6-under 210. In doing so he becomes only the 6th player in
history to win both the Open and the Mass. Amateur, which he took earlier. He
is a 25 year old grad of Northwestern from Northboro, MA (just a few houses
down the street from me as a matter of fact - so what do I win?? ;^). Fran and
his family have been friends for a long time (his dad, Fran Sr., who won the
Open in 1966, was my little league baseball coach) and I'm real excited for
him, I think he finally is on top of his game. He has been really developing
his game as of late, spending time with Paul Kostis in Plam Beach and playing
on the South African tour, and will make his second try for the PGA soon.
Watch for his name.
Anyway, here's how the tourney finished...
FROM THE BOSTON GLOBE, 6/28/90:
There had been a three-way tie as [Jeff] Lewis finished out with a par and
Quinn and Geoff Sisk walked up the 18th fairway tied at minus 5. Sisk, who had
nearly holed out a 3-iron on the par-3 17th and climbed into the deadlock with
a birdie, went for the pin on the 18th and ended up in the trap, setting up
a crushing bogey.
Quinn, who joined Jesse Guilford, Francis Ouimet, Charley Volpone,
Jim Hallet, and Kevin Johnson as the only players to pull off the double, won
with the 6-under 210 he predicted he would do it [sic]. Lewis (72-211) was
alone in second, and Sisk (73) finished joint third with Sky Meadow's Mike San
Filippo (73) at 212. The second-round leader, Willowbend's Ted O'Rourke, skied
to an 80 and wound up at 2-over 218.

Um...if I'm not mistaken, the 1990 Mass Amateur hasn't been played yet.

| I think Fran Q won the Mass Amateur a few years ago, which is what the
story was alluding to. Boy, am I getting old! I can remember playing
Stow when Fran Q, Sr. was the pro there (and a fairly young guy, at the
time).
