989.0. "Equipment Prices in the Off Season???" by PEAKS::WELLS () Wed Jun 27 1990 12:05

Hi,
I'm new to golf and likewise to this notes file. I've gotten lots
of great info reading this file in the last week or so, especially on equipment
and technique. I wish there was a notes file to inform about golf events
happening here in Colorado Springs.

I played about 2 times last year and decided that maybe this sport could
be fun. I've played about 4 or 5 times this year by now and have decided that
it's a whole lot of fun and I want to get better at it. I got an old $15
junk set of clubs from a garage sale at the beginning of the season. It's
got really the bare minimum, if that, of what I need (I borrow a 9 iron from
the friend I play with). I really need to get some equipment to finish out
the season and hopefully another season before I really spend the bucks and
get a nice set.

My question is, should I wait with buying equipment until the off
season? Will the prices be substantially lower then or will the difference be
insignificant? How about for used equipment? Should I get a high quality
used set or a lower quality new set? Remember this is a set to learn on with
plans to upgrade in a couple of seasons. I have the distinct impression that
at this point in my game the quality of my clubs will make much less of a
difference than the quality of the instruction I receive. Do I need a full
set or will a half set be enough for the first couple of seasons?

When is the "off season" by the way?

Suggestions are appreciated,
Rick Wells

    Rick,

With the popularity of the game now I believe that it might be
difficult to get a "price break" on equipment. I don't really pay much
attention to sales of golf equipment so I don't really know, but that
would be my guess. You might start looking in late August through
September as that is the most likely time that retailers would be
    trying to off load inventory.

    	Getting a kangaroo set for starters (3, 5, 7, 9 irons and a couple
of woods) is usually a good idea. I generally recommend that to my
customers when they first start out. While this is not a hard and fast
rule, it usually saves money that can be put into other aspects of the
game such a lessons. I do not recommend garage sale clubs because you
are likely to waste money on a set of clubs that is difficult for a new
player to hit. You might check out a local clubmaker to get a starter
set. I handle a starter set from Golfsmith that is excellent and at a
reasonable price or you can go to a discount house (e.g. Nevada Bob's
[perish the thought]) for a set giving reasonable price/quality.
The MOST important part though is to have fun.
