My wife got me a copy of the New England Golf Guide for Father's Day,
and it's quite a piece of work. It purports to list data for over
450 public courses in the six New England states. Among other
things, it gives lengths, par, costs (weekday/weekend), a thumbnail
sketch of the course ("hilly, tight," etc), and includes (when avail-
able) USGA rating against par, and slope. It also tells which courses
have tee times available, driving ranges, and so forth.
Interesting to me was the slope ratings (unhappily, many of the courses
I'm likely to play didn't have them). You can really tell the monsters!
The two tied for highest, at 137, were Crumpin-Fox, and The Balsams in
Dixville Notch, NH. Better bring plenty of golf balls for those two.
The book goes for $12.95 (paperback), and includes discount coupons to
a number of courses (4 play for the price of 3, during certain days and

| The book listed the slope for Crumpin-Fox from the BLUE tees. From the
BACK (back) tees it's 141, and is 7000 yards. When they recalculate the
slope with the new 9 and bentgrass fairways, I think it'll go up to
143-144.

Is it true that the highest slope rating on the scale is 155?
