| Before I bought my TAs about a year ago, I demoed Pings, Wilson Staff,
and Hogan Edge (I think?). Since I am an intermediate player (I play
about bogey golf right now), I felt that they gave me the best overall
feel and performance, especially on off-center hits. I picked them
over the Pings because I felt (1) the Pings swung a little light, and
(2) the Pings were not responsive enough (they didn't have enough
feel). I picked the TAs over the Staff and the Edge because I didn't
think I could hit the sweetspot enough to do these clubs justice.
I don't have a TA putter.

| I bought the 845's last year for most of the same reasons as re:1.
I was playing a very old set of Staffs and couldnot hit the sweet
spot as consistently as I would have liked. I find these clubs
very responsive and I did not notice a change in distance that may
come with a different sweet spot but I am a big hitter anyway.
I love these clubs. I also swung the EQL's that felt real good
also but the same length thing looks good on paper but I haven't
seen it practiced so I shyed away. For what it is worth the 845'S are
featured along with a few other clubs in the most recent PLAYBOY.

That is one straight line that is hard to pass up, but I think I
better let it slide.

954.5 | Soon to be no more Armour clones... | MSEE::KELLEY | Golf, golf, and more golf | Fri Sep 14 1990 12:03 | 20 |

I am a believer... I decided to try a set of the Tommy Armour clones
just to see how they felt (I love trying new clubs/styles to try to
help my head game any ways). I think they have a great feel. The first
round I tried them (just nine holes) the wife and headed over to the
course late on Sunday afternoon, I just took the newly made irons and
no woods. I couldn't beleive the results, I shot a 37 (one over). I
hit them just about the same distance as the set that I was using so there
much problem knowing what club to use.
BTW, if anybody is thinking about getting a set of the Armour clones, to
save some money and not have to pay for the name, do it soon or you will
be out of luck. Tommy Armour is cracking down, once current supplies of
clones are sold there will be no more, they can not manufacture any
more of the Tommy Armour 845 clones...
Enjoy

954.7 | ZAAP putters | CHEFS::HEELAN | Andaluz por deseo | Fri Jan 11 1991 13:09 | 10 |
| Anybody using a ZAAP putter ? I tried one out in the pro shop with
(for me :-}) remarkable results.
Are they worth $90 or so, or are they just another nice-looking, nice
feeling putter ?
Cheers

954.8 | ZAAPed - and lovin' it | ODIXIE::GEORGE | | Fri Jan 11 1991 14:33 | 13 |
| I just got one - used it 6 rounds. I *HATED* it for the first 5
rounds. But I kept practicing at night on the carpet. (Putting, that
is!) Finally - after changing my grip and ball placement - got it
figured out. 10-footers are now gimmes...
I won mine in a tournament, so yes, it's worth what I paid for it. My
thought is that if you switch putters alot, it may be too much money.
But if you're like me - it's only the 2nd putter I've ever had - then
give it try. Confidence is 97% of putting.
Good Luck,
Steve

| re: .7
I bought my ZAAP about a year ago and happy with it. Although like .8,
I wasn't too thrilled about the result for the first 4-5 rounds. The
reason I bought it was I'm very happy with my 845's and my 8802 was
starting to give me problems so I decided to give ZAAP a try.
To me, it's worth the price.

954.13 | 845s' - stiff only? | MARX::FLEMING | http://wright.ogo.dec.com/jcf.html | Thu Feb 10 1994 15:13 | 7 |
| I recently have been trying to get a Tommy Armour 845 1-iron.
I ordered one with a regular shaft from Nevada Bobs' in Westboro, Mass.
and they recently called and said they could only get the stiff shaft.
Do they make the 845's with a regular shaft? If not, I think I
would rather get something else with a more whippy feel to it.
Any recomendations?

954.15 | Have your favorite clubmaker make a custom clone | PTOVAX::BREZLER | | Fri Feb 11 1994 10:25 | 7 |
| There are a few excellent Tommy Armour clones on the market. You can
have your favorite clubmaker put whatever shaft on it you might prefer.
Pro-fit in Alfaretta, GA, is the group I buy mine from although they
want to sell a complete set of heads. There is another outfit in N.J.
who I just ordered 2 5-iron heads from but haven't received it yet. I'm
expecting it to arrive today or tomorrow. I won't be able to comment on
the quality for some time. The ones from Pro-fit are excellent.

954.16 | stiff vs reg shaft | TEEDUP::SEARS | | Fri Feb 11 1994 14:04 | 6 |
| Every one Iron I've looked at had a stiff shaft on it. I think it's
because of the length of the shaft and maintaining control. I might
ask a few more people about this before having one built with a reg
shaft.

| I'd be happy to hear more opinions about this. I've been
reading that for beginners such as myself it's better to
stay away from stiff shafts. Is it true that a one iron
should be an exception?

A stiff shaft for a 1-iron is good idea in that
you want to be able to hit the ball straighter. A regular shaft will
accentuate a hook or fade swing outcome.
One thing to remember about 1-irons. Because of the low loft, you will need
to be able to generate good clubhead speed with a reasonably upright
swing plane to get the ball up very well.

| re: Jim
For an upright swing plane:
1) Stand more upright and closer to the ball
2) Move the hands in closer to the body
3) Move feet closer together

One of my goals in life is to hit the ball straighter. :-|
But I keep reading in these golf magazines about how stiff
shafts are really only for good players and high handicappers
should use regular shafts because they're more forgiving.
By this I assumed that they help you hit the ball straighter.
Not true?

954.23 | | CPDW::LACAIRE | | Tue Feb 15 1994 09:52 | 5 |
| Beginners should not be messing with a 1-iron. It's too difficult a
club to hit. Try a 5 wood or one of those Callaway 7-woods. You can get
those with a regular shaft (which you probably want as a beginner
unless you are very strong and/or can generate a fast clubhead speed). You
will be able to get those airborne easily and use them from the rough.
