Regardless if you are lefty or not (I am), noters here love to help
(our advice may not do you too much good, but nevertheless we'll give
it and it's free!), but you need to give more details about what you
think is wrong with your game.
In any case, I will advance that most of the advices will send you to
a pro for lessons, so may already start considering them.

953.2 | Right-Handed vs Left Handed | ODIXIE::WESTCL | Gator Golfer | Tue May 29 1990 13:33 | 14 |
| Two things:
You can watch right-handed video tapes/broadcasts, etc. by placing a
mirror in front of the TV to see what it looks like right-handed.
Second, if you are left handed by nature then, by all means, try
playing right-handed. Bob Charles, the worlds greatest left-handed
player is a right-handed person. Many of the best touring right-handed
players are left-handed people. Personally, I'm left handed in every
thing I do except golf. I play right-handed, and have a fairly low
handicap. Try it.
Good luck.

953.4 | HERE'S THE PROBLEM!!! | ESKIMO::JIMENEZ | | Wed May 30 1990 08:09 | 19 |
| TAVO,
THE TWO MAIN THINGS THAT ARE WRONG WITH MY GAME IS:
1) I CAN'T SEEM TO STOP SLICING THE BALL WITH MY WOODS
& 2) WHEN I GET SO CLOSE TO THE GREEN THAT I CAN'T HIT
A FULL WEDGE, I ALWAYS SEEM TO HIT IT TOO HARD OR
TOO SOFT. THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS A 1/2 OR 3/4
WEDGE IN MY GAME. DO YOU SLOW YOUR SWING DOWN, OR
DO YOU CHOKE FURTHER DOWN ON THE CLUB?
I WENT OUT FRIDAY TO HILLCREST AND HAD A HARD TIME WITH MY
SLICE. WHAT SEEMED TO HELP A LITTLE WAS TO CLOSE MY STANCE AND
SWING A LITTLE MORE OUTSIDE TO IN. I'M NOT SURE IF THIS IS THE
RIGHT THING TO DO.
THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR ANY ADVICE ON THIS......

| a young up and comming pro once asked Ben Hogan how he could
become as good a golfer as Hogan was....Hogans answer was...
"do you have a shag bag? The young pro answered yes. Hogan replied
"use it.."
Now none of us will ever become anything more than "hackers" but if
your really serious about improving then there are two things that will
almost always insure that you improve your golf game to the level that
you are capable of reaching....
1) take some lessons from a good professional
2) practice, practice, practice....

hi Paul,
A shag bag is a device that carry's a bunch of golf balls, and has
a neat/easy way of picking them up. The bag has a tube coming out
of it that allows easy passage of golf balls into the bag. The
end of the tube has a "picker upper" that you simply place over
the ball and push down. Eliminating the back problems you may get
bending over to pick up the golf ball.
In the U.S. the term "shag" means to fetch. Like a dog will shag
a ball.

953.8 | shag bag == 'woman of the night'???? | SQGUK::NOCK | Hello Mum! | Wed May 30 1990 11:58 | 5 |
| 'Shag' has quite a different meaning in the UK! If it was a dog, then
another term for it might be 'falling over you leg', if you get my
drift. Slang for erm, well, you know, nudge, nudge, say no more....

I firmly believe (being a lefty) you should play the good game from
what ever side feels natural. If natural is left-handed then your
decsion is made.
I too had a tremendous slice. My cure is stated in a previous note.
1) I took lessons from a PGA professional
2) Praticed practided practiced.
Most of my slicing was due to a poor address. This is a problem the
post-office can't fix but YOU can.
Take some lessons and enjoy-

The key to hitting less than a full wedge is reducing your full swing
to a 3/4, 1/2, etc swing. The method I use is based on the "clock"
hands. The ball and club are at 6 O'clock, a half backswing brings the
club back to 9 O'clock, a little more is 10 O'clock. When I look at a
40 yard picth shot, I determine how far to bring back the club on the
clock and execute the shot. Other key points: same swing tempo; follow
through to atleast the oposite side of the clock - if backswing is
stops at 9 O'clock, follow through should be to atleast 3 O'clock.
Other points that may be helpful on the shorter pitch and chip shots:
- shorten your grip on the club
- open your stance 10 to 20 degrees
- make sure your hands stay AHEAD of the ball at impact

Outside to inside promotes a slice. You want to be swinging inside to
outside. Also, make sure you are "releasing" your wrist so the
clubface comes back to where it started. I have this problem
sometimes, I lock my wrist somewhere in the backswing or downswing and
the clubface cannot come square to the ball at impact.
Hope this helps.

Until you feel comfortable with less than a full wedge shot you
can also work on positioning your ball on the course so that you
leave yourself a full shot. For example if you can't reach that
par 5 in two, nothing says you have to hit your ball to within 50yds.
of the green. Hit less club on your second shot leaving yourself
a full wedge. KO described how to hit partial wedges. I found them
difficult until this year. They do require feel & practice. You
will have to master them for the times you miss the green and there's
a trap between you & the green, etc.

To all who have replied to my message so far I say thanks.
Concerning the issue of left or right handed, I pretty much do
EVERYTHING left handed and that's what I feel most comfortable
with so I'll stick with that . Concerning practice, well I could
do more of that, and I will be - this Friday, so I'm going to try
some of your suggestions....

Just a note of interest. The "Shag" is the State Dance of the State of
South Carolina. It's done to beach music. I guess it's kinda like in
a dance in Europe, too. Right!?! :-)

| Aren't any of you natural lefties out there that play rightie going to
support my cause? I'm telling you, if you're left handed, you should
try the game from the right side! And, vice versa. Oddly enough, I
can pick up a left handed club and swing it and feel very comfortable
about it. But, talk about a slice!!

| re:.15 and .0
Try right handed. Both my brother and I learned to play baseball
left-handed, from our left-handed Father. I am still an expert at
hitting fungos, infield and outfield with my left-handed stance.
I've coached American Legion Baseball for over 25 years, so I've hit
more than a few balls (all left-handed). My brother learned to play
golf first and did it left-handed. He forced me to play right-handed.
My brother played every sport other than basketball better than I did.
He played college football, baseball and basketball. I played college
basketball only. I never lost a round to him in golf (after a
reasonable learning period). His widow tells me that it killed him
he couldn't beat me at golf, since he beat me at everything else(except
basketball). Play right-handed, the stakes are high!
Seriously, the availability of instruction, equipment, experience, etc.
is readily obtainable for the right-hander, but always backwards for
the guy on the wrong side of the ball. Besides, I get gun shy when I
see someone down the fairway lining up to hit back at me!
