| Sky Meadow is just across and up the street. Great course. Bring your
wallet.

948.2 | Here are a few... | XANADU::CAMPBELL | A mind is a terrible thing | Thu May 17 1990 16:08 | 17 |
| There are a few within a 15-20 minute drive. There is one just
up the street from the Sheraton called Sky Meadow. Beautiful
course, but it cost. I think it's $50 for 18.
Then there is Green Meadows CC in Hudson. This is a 36 hole course
and is usually busy. Not sure of the green fees, bu I believe
they are around $20.
There is also Passaconaway CC in Litchfield. Nice course, $20
for 18.
There is also Amherst CC, but that's more like a 30 minute drive
and they are around $20 for 18.
Hope this help some.

I haven't played Sky Meadow since they opened the last 8 holes, but based upon
the other 10 I would definitely say that it is the place to play.

| Passaconaway is no longer $20 for 18. This year they are $25.
I won't be playing there again. Not worth the $25. I'd rather
pay an extra $25 and play Sky Meadow.

948.5 | Sky Meadow is nice... | GRANPA::RFAGLEY | | Tue May 29 1990 19:31 | 10 |
| I had the pleasure of playing Sky I would have enjoyed it had I not
been completely inept the entire day. 104!!! It's not that tough. My
only complaint is the great number of blind pins. The course isn't
long if you can hit the ball out of your shadow.
It's worth playing. I'd do it again!

I found that the difference between a good and bad score at
Sky Meadow was keeping the ball in the short grass. The rough
on the original 10 holes was severe. I haven't got a chance to
play the full 18, but am looking forward to it.

| I wish I had cut out the original quote, but the Boston Sunday Globe
had a few *very* complementary lines about Sky Meadows. The gist
is that the course is worth travelleing out of your way for. And
is good enough to host the New England Amateur in the near future.
I'd expect it to get a little more crowded after that!

| SKY MEADOW IS JUST GREAT! PLAYED THERE THREE TIMES THIS YEAR ALREADY.
I LIVE A MILE FROM THE PLACE. THE NAME OF THE GAME THERE IS KEEP IT IN
THE FAIRWAY. PLAY CONSERVATIVE AND YOU'LL SCORE GREAT. SHOT A 75 LAST
THURSDAY. THE PEOPLE OUT THERE ARE REALLY HELPFUL. JUST KEEP THE CART
ON THE PATHS....
HAVE FUN, RIGHT DOWN THE MIDDLE..

What are they getting for a round there now? I played there 3 times
last year, but the price is getting hard to justify playing there much.

948.11 | some more courses in 1/2 hour radius | SIOUXI::BREEN | | Thu May 31 1990 15:04 | 18 |
| A real quick addition for the record to courses around Nashua
Ponomah Green - across from Amherst CC - 9 hole exec with range
Buckmeadow - on 101 1/4 mile before 122 (where right takes you to
Amherst CC
Whipporwill(sic) - across downtown bridge over to Hudson on 102 - sign
on right - have weekend special ($8) after 5pm - 9 holes
Tyngsboro - take 3 south to 13 east over bridge; right and on left -
not by any means to be confused with Vesper (drool) a
little furthur down road (private). 9holes.
------
The above would all be less than 1/2 hour from Sheraton Tara. there is
also a little (Indian name???) course hidden in Westford semi private
9holes.
Have I missed any?
by the way is Sky Meadow still on Lung ASSoc plan?

| Can someone update this note. I'm heading to the Sheraton Aug 9 thru
13th and would like to play. Flying into Manchester.
Looks like Sky is the choice of many. Willing to pay the bucks if it's
worth it. Also can you list a few Private courses. Maybe my Pro can
call and make arrangements.
Have car, will travel.
As an option, will get into town early and would like to join a few
other noters for a friendly game. Jack, how far is the Fox?

| Public courses:
Sky Meadow is in great shape, fun course, $36 after 2:00 with cart (!)
It's just up the road.
Overlook CC is fun, haven't played this year so don't know what shape
it's in. 5 miles or so via back roads, $25 or so to play (?)
Passaconaway CC is about 10 miles away, $25, but in my mind well
worth the effort. It's in fine shape, and the blue tees will be
a fun experience. Links style (sorta), fairly open.
I'd avoid Green Meadow like the plague.
Shattuck Inn is about an hour away, $30 or so, but is spectacular.
Just 25 minutes away in Mass is Shaker Hills. $40 or so, $25 after
4:00 but they toss you @ 8:00. Really something, but the greens
are just too hard for reasonable scoring (at least for me)
Private:
Nashua CC. Very close, very nice.
Manchester CC Just 20 minutes up Rt 3, I like this a lot.

948.17 | Some more | AKOCOA::BREEN | Bill Breen Ako2-3 244-7984 | Wed Jul 15 1992 17:42 | 16 |
| Souhegan is a new course up the road from MKO - nice range. The
"despised" Green Meadow does have a grass range and all you can play
after 3pm for $11 - If you show Tues. at 3:30 play along with DEC BXC
league.
Your Pro has contacts. Vesper is 15 minutes south on 3a (113 exit east
off 3south and over the bridge and take (first?) right.
I have heard very good things about Winchester south to 128 and
continue south - probalby 35 minutes.
The well traveled Jack V. has said kind words about the last two but
they are not the easiest to get onto. Reminds me I have an invite to
play Winchester I'll have to make the call one of these days if I can
ever learn to hit a wood again

| GreenMeadow has variable quality across its 36 holes, with the south course
being a much better quality course in my opinion. But none of it is worth
writing home about (well, there are a few holes). The real problem with it is
the crowds. The driving range is a good range, with over 300 yards of driving
distance (haven't knocked any off just yet...)
Overlook is in tremendous shape... er, I mean it's terrible, stay away from
it, it's a cesspit, you wouldn't like it.

I tend to disagree with the previous reply on Overlook. I think it is
a beautiful course in very good shape. I have played there twice in the
last month. It is a tougher and more challenging course from the blues.
It is an easy course from the whites.

948.20 | Some More Hints | MRKTNG::VARLEY | | Mon Jul 27 1992 09:59 | 32 |
| Ken, just back from vacation/moving into our new house, so I just read
your note. The Fox is about 1 hr. 10 min. from Nashua.
Comments:
Shattuck Inn - Goofy golf - lots of local knowledge with hazards
EVERYWHERE, and absolutely no amenities (beer, sandwiches, locker room
- they use portable toilets), but spectacular scenery. Slope is 148 or
149 from the "tips," which are about 6700+ yards. Probably worth
seeing. I recently shot 87 from the tips with 4 lost balls - and 2 of
'em were good shots...
Winchester - if your pro can help you, don't miss Winchester - it's
Donald Ross at his very best.
Vesper - Beautiful course with great par 3's, and in fabulous shape. 10
holes on an island in the Merrimack river. One of 5 courses in the
world with "Vesper Bent" greens.
Manchester - Ross course I've never played. Heard it's a real good
layout with indifferent conditioning. This may have changed recently...
Nashua - Real nice layout in good shape. one of the very best in NH,
which might make it a top 20 in Mass....
Salem - In Peabody, Mass. I'd try Salem first, unless you can get on
Brookline.
Myopia Hunt - Wenham, Ma. I might like Myopia even better than
Brookline. Great old course that has hosted 4 U.S. Opens early in the
1900s.

You missed the irony of his remark. He's telling people it's a lousy
course so other people won't go there, and he won't have a problem
getting a tee time.
