| Gary,
At 8 , I would keep him away from competion and
just let him play with you and get to enjoy it and
lern the basics.
At 12 I started,on my son who is now 17 and playing the
#2 slot on the Arlington High Golf team. But this is
his first taste of competitive golf and NOW WANTS to
play MGA Junior Level competition.(at the expense of Baseball)

| Gary,
Move into any of these programs carefully. Make sure that
your son is really interested before you make the move.
Competetion at his age is a touchy area. If your son has demonstrated
the interest and has the appropriate skill level for his group, then
participation in a junior program can be considered. Heck, kids play
Little League at 9 and think about all those youth soccer leagues !
The kids are playing competitively at an early age anyway, so why is
golf any different ?
As a parent and having coached Little League baseball for 15 years, I
have found that a child's interest is best ruined by pushy parents
and coaches whose only interest is winning (not to mention coaches that
have no understanding of the fundamentals of the particular game they
are involved in).
While I have not yet reached the point of junior golf with my 2 kids
and have not looked into it very deeply, I like the idea more than if
they wanted to get into baseball.
Again, approach this carefully. Every child is different, especially
at this age and good luck.
