910.0. "You will hear it when your'e ready" by CSCOAC::CONWAY_J (Happiness = wanting what you have) Thu Apr 05 1990 09:29

I fixed a problem at the range last nite that I have been having on and
off for years. I was hitting balls with friend and as usual, I was
hitting my irons real well but when I picked up a wood, everything went
to hell. I was spraying them all over the place, one left, one right,
then one straight, and not getting anything in the way of distance. I
complained to my buddy, and he agreed to watch me for a while. Well He
watched me hit about 3 balls with my driver, then he asked me to hit my
7 iron, and then the driver again. Then he said in his most contemtuous
voice, "You are swaying and moving your head when you swing the driver,
concentrate on turning your shoulders around your head, make your
head the axis of your turn". Well, I wiped the eggs off my face and
followed his advice. You guessed it, between one swing and the next I
became Arnold Palmer.....ok, ok, Nancy lopez, but seriously, EVERYTHING
improved. I hit the rest of the bucket straight. I Was getting some
serious distance (250 yards +), I even hit two balls out of the
range!!!!! This was one of those moments when the light goes on in
your brain, and you say "AHA!!" By concentrating on turning around, my
head, I HAD to swing slowley and with good rythym. I HAD to get the
weight back left as the first move of my down swing! And I HAD to keep
my shoulders behind the ball thru impact! If I didn't my head would
move off the ball, and I could feel that and stop. You know I am sure
that 8 zillion people have told me to "keep a steady head" since I
first picked up a golf club. But last night was the first time I heard
it, that it meant anything to me. Its a strange game.

Another way to find out about this, without the egg, is to set up
a camcorder and hit all clubs talking about what club you used,
how far the ball went and whether it went left or right.

Then go home and review it..You'll be able to pick see what you did
and hear the results. Most camcorders allow you to view the tape
through the sight.... If you want, record a few shots, then watch
the tape for instant gratification (huh?).

You will be surprised at what you look like on tape...I know I was.
