He's due.
I have not considered any of the folks on the European Tour because I
haven't seen them playing and couldn't make a judgement. Mark C.'s
putting problems this year combined with the greens at Augusta
eliminate him. Greg Norman is a close second to Payne. Greg's been
doing well, yet that one bad round per tournament still seems to
plague him.
Can't wait !!!!!

said something inane. Hopefully Norman will chip in to beat
him 4 or 5 more times this year just to fry his lizard !!
And if showing your emotions on the course is being a whiner
then I guess I better move to the head of a very long line.

| Tavo,
From what I've read, Seve hasn't played that much this year. His
first time out for six weeks was in the Desert Classic in Dubai
where he 'only' finished third. That was the second European event.
The following week he was about 20th in the Mediterranean Open in
Marbella and then duly won the next event, the Majorca Open. I'm
not sure he played last weekend in the Volvo Open in Italy.
Probably more important though is that he says he's happy with his
game and claims to be swinging the club a lot better than at
anytime in the last 6 months.
Sounds like your favourite might be a danger.

In this weeks tourney in the US, the Nestle Invitational where most

Your're right Gene, he was 77 or 78 and did likewise the swcond day

Let's hope they get their game back for April 5th, because if the
Nestle is a sample of what is going to happen then, the only
non-Americans in the top 5 (10?) were Norman and Aim from South
Africa. I didn't see in The Globe today a full listing so I don't
know where Woosnam and Olazabal finished, but they weren't listed in

But you never know with the Masters. As far as spectatoring goes, it's

Has the long game and casual air. Can "steer" a 2 iron and

| I see Greg Norman has the Masters field exactly where he wants them -
love this guy's early strategy. Stranger in Paradise - Greg Norman in a
Major on thursday.:-) Seriously though, I wish the talking heads
covering the event wouldn't dwell on Greg's round like it was the
biggest disaster story since the world-series earthquake. Its unfair to
Greg and to the viewers. It was just a round of golf, not the end of
civilization as we know it. Greg, I am sure would agree with me. Its a
bad round on a thursday, no big thing, just part of what makes this guy
so interesting and charismatic.
Did ya'all catch Jumbo's 2 iron on 15? A thing of beauty.
Aside from my beef about how they dealt with Norman's round, how did
ya'all like the TV coverage? I caught the 9 pm to 11pm rerun on USA and
I thought it was very slow. Too much time wasted on watching guys make
club selections, clean balls, and walk, walk, walk. f

It would be quite a story if he won. Now, if the announcers only

Congrats to Walta and Phil on their forecasts. In Walta's case Norman
was replaced by Floyd, but to predict another playoff with Faldo
involved is excellent. What does the crystal ball say about the
US Open, Walta ?
It was another amazing Sunday. Who would have thought that Faldo
would win after his bunker shot at 12 and Floyd putting for birdie
on 11. He is truly World No 1 now.
I was rooting for Floyd in the playoff but Faldo has nerves of steel
and i was very impressed by his putts on 15,16,18 and 10.

BTW: Congrats to Irishman Ronan Rafferty on finishing 11th equal

| A great finish. Nick Faldo was great under pressure and showed
a lot of guts in his defense of the Masters chanmpionship. his
par at the 12th yesterday was great. And his par at 10 in sudden
death, coming out of that bunker, was another great save. I felt
a little sorry for Floyd, but in a playoff, there can be only one
winner.
The age factor is definately made up for in the experience when
playing at Augusta. If you look at the top 15 finishers, you find
a great deal of experience. Faldo, Floyd, Nicklaus, Wadkins, Watson
etc., all know the course and greens very well.
Again, cnorats to Nick Faldo for winning this tournament, now
2 years in a row, and who knows, maybe 3!!!

Ya, a great big congrats to Faldo...! As he said after the tourney
he feels that he is now really part of the history books...
I also felt bad for Floyd who was so happy until the final few
holes, but he admitted that his game/swing did not feel that good
yesterday and it showed, he was struggling out there... Did you
see the dejection on Floyd's face (not when he hit the shot in
the water, but when he shook Faldo's hand)?
Great tourney for Nicklaus, Wadkins, Watson, and the others that
were able to finish under par...
Real tough tourney for some of your top picks here like Norman,
Calcavecchia and The Zinger...!
Great tourney - great finish

Words to describe that man ...Nick Faldo!!
The man has such a game these days, not only does he strick the
ball so beautifully with so little effort, but he really holds it
all together when needed. He's not bad for someone who's been brought
up on cow-pastures is he?? 8^)
What a save on 12.
What a long iron second on 13.
What an up and down on 15.
What a tee-shot on 16.
What a bunker shot on 10 again.
It goes on and on....
I feel a little sorry for Floyd after the way he played. But it
got away from him at 17 with a relatively poor approach shot. But
he still had a really good chance to birdie 10 and I was surprised
he missed seeing as everything else he did came off. Then to dunk
his second in the water at 11 was a sad way for him to finish. Was
he being too greedy??
Great showing also from Nicklaus and Gary Player.
But.. Nick played brilliantly and Mondays aren't so bad after all!!!
In fact this one is magic!!! Yabadabadoooo!!!

Have to disagree with you here Walta. Couples is perhaps one
of the easiest going of the new breed of studs on the tour. I
have seen him sh__k, blow last holes of the Ryder Cup, get the

hi Rick,
I can see how I wasn't clear... I didn't mean he looses his temper.
He just appears to be overly syched one minute, then overly depressed
the next. Like he gets real "down" on himself, expecting all his
putts to drop... or too "up" when he does well. I can't remember
where I read it, but it was said golfers should try to keep their
emotions on an even keel. Watching Fred after he misses a 4 footer,
looks as if he just quits on himself... After eagling the 15th
yesterday he bogied the next two. Watching his elation after the
eagle I thought to myself "settle down Fred, keep it going".
Seems like he expects perfection from his game... his swing is
nothing short of perfect!
JMHO,
Walta
Ps. BB's hooking up again Rick? By the way are you running the
Challenge Cup again? You really came through last year!

| Ray Floyd has always been my favorite, so I feel lousy today. Not
as lousy as Tempo Raymondo must feel, but lousy just the same. I
think he was exemplary out there; gallant, classy, sportsmanlike.
Unlike Stadler, who has a perpetual sneering, nasty look on his
face, Floyd epitomizes the best in golf. He's just one notch under
Nicklaus in my book of all-time greats.
This was the most exciting Masters I've ever seen. I think Floyd
had it all the way, against an incredibly good golfer in Faldo,
except for two strategic errors.
1. His decision to use a driver on the 18th. Nicklaus and many others
used a 3-wood. He was so pumped up that he put the drive in the
Lyle Bunker, and scrambled for a miracle par to tie. But with the
way he'd been putting, lay up, mid-iron to the green, possible
one-putt, he could have won it outright on 18.
2. Obviously, the 7-iron on 11 in the playoff. In hindsight, he
was right on the line for the pin, and a 6-iron would have made
it. Easy to say, but with that pressure......
My heart just bleeds for Floyd today. He lost to a brilliant player,
a master technician, and clearly a man with heart -- just look at
that Faldo sand save on the first playoff hole. But I still feel
somehow that a musician -- Floyd -- lost to a synthesizer -- Faldo.
Great golf, but still the saddest thing I've ever seen in sport.

Found the comment strange about Floyd being a musician and Nick
being a synthesiser. I'm SURE you don't.... but hope you don't mean
that Nick's game isn't as natural as Ray Floyd's. To me there's
only two other men who make it look as easy as Nick does... Fred
Couples and Seve Ballesteros.
You shouldn't forget that it took Nick two years to take his swing
apart and rebuild it with David Leadbetter's help. It takes a brave
man to do that when you've been playing on tour for a number of
years already. It's only in the past few years that we can all see
what a good decision that was!! Personally I never get tired of
watching how smooth he swings... how can you get tired of near
perfection??
What a day yesterday was!! I've never felt a buzz like we had in
the office yesterday. Everyone was happy!! Now got the live action
and the recorded highlights on tape. My vault is getting pretty
full these days...8^)
Sounds like I pipped Walta by a nose in the tipping. My place Greg
Norman wasn't too hot though was it??
Roll on the US Open.

| Yes, I didn't quite know what the musician/synthesiser stuff meant
either. One thing Nick always had, even before the big changes was
incredible rhythm and tempo.
Bad luck for Ray - I think, ironically, he suffered over the last 9 for
being in front with a cushion. The smart thing (which he seemed to be
doing) was to keep rattling in the pars and not do anything silly. I
think when Nick started to catch him the pressure must have been
enormous - and contributed to the 5 on 17 and the scramble up 18.
I was impressed by Rafferty's first Masters, as with all the Europeans
(apart form Sandy 'where's my crash helmet' Lyle). Interesting to see
the main challenge to the Europeans ;-) was from the old-timers Floyd
and Nicklaus ;-)

I have just been glancing through the morning papers and noticed
that your man Floyd is rather "unhappy" at loosing the Masters.
Understandably so, but his comments about Faldo are in bad taste
and don't say a lot for him.
"I'm not in the mood to talk about him"
"I suppose he's a fine player"
"Slow players (Nicklaus and Faldo) are never easy to play behind"
(they only lost half a hole on the group ahead of them!)
Maybe he's finding it hard to accept that he blew it. He made the
mistakes. He played safe thinking that no-one would catch him but
once he was put under pressure he made the miss, no-one else. Faldo
played some great golf to get back into it after double bogey on
1. He attacked the course because he had to. He proved that he had
the ability and confidence to win under severe pressure. I think
Floyd and others should accept that and give credit where due.
Well played Faldo, bad luck Floyd.

I think Floyd's comments are entirely fitting a man who lost something
very precious that was within his grasp. He realizes that it probably
was his last opportunity.
The funny thing about golfers is that they are expected to talk to
the press even when they don't feel like it. To bad this wasn't
baseball, Floyd could hide out in the trainer's room, refusing to
talk with reports.
I don't believe that Floyd's comments on Faldo's pace of play were
sour grapes or making an excuse. It does have an effect to play behind
slow players. Faldo is not Mr. Speedy. At The Country Club he & Mr.
Strange took over 5 hours to play 18 holes, as a twosome, without
anyone else on the course, with plenty of people to help find wayward
shots!
This was a sad Masters because Floyd lost it, Faldo gets much credit
for persevering, shooting a great round, and not collapsing when
he dumped his ball in the trap on 10.
Regarding coverage bias; I belive that CBS followed Nicklaus too long
hoping that the was going to generate another miracle. Because of this
and too many interviews with players live action (including much of
Faldo's great round) was lost to the viewer.

I don't think its very appropriate to see the Faldo/Floyd shootout
in the nationalistic way that some noters are putting it. I think
of it like the great Nicklaus/Palmer and Nicklaus/Watson battles,
of the past, that is, just great sport!
Both are 100% committed professionals engaged in the most pressure
packed situation imaginable. That they both played magnificantly
is a great credit to them both ( this despite Floyds pulled iron
shots ).
Floyd's comments are not unusual for someone who has been through
what he had been. He must have been emotionally drained.
I agree that these after round interviews are a bit dodgy.

Maybe it was just me, but I thought, for the most part that the
broadcast of the Masters (Sunday) was pretty boring. When I tuned
in, Floyd had a 3-4 shot lead and nobody was really making a run
at him. It was not until the last few holes that it looked like
there would be a playoff, then it got interesting. The playoff
was also very good, although a bit anti-climactic (sp?) when
Floyd "washed his ball off", up to that point it was all you
could hope for.
Aside from this, I feel Floyd was fairly lucky to maintain the lead.
Even Tom Weiskopf mentioned that he was not playing all that good.
He hit something like 6 out of the first 13 or so greens. Not
exacltly up to "par". To his credit though, he did scramble all
day long and stayed right in there. A tip of the hat also goes to
Nick Faldo, he had the guts to hang tough and keep on charging.
The par on 12 was definetly a confidence boost for him, that sand
shot could have just as easily made it to the water, or at least
off the green.
I also feel bad for Jack, never could get moving, he'd birdie one, I
would start thinking he was about to charge, then he'd bogey one.
All in all though, the first 1/2 - 3/4 of the broadcast were pretty
boring.

you brought up a good point about Floyd's play. I, too,
remember Tom's comment and tend to agree. I will have review the tape
to see how Ray did over the last nine holes.
I was disappointed that Chris Patton finished with a 78. Hope'd he
would do better.
One of the surprizes that I noticed this year was the view from either
the 10th or the 11th tee looking down the fairway. It seemed narrow
and helped give me a greater appreciation of Augusta. It gets more
beautiful every year.
