883.0. "Golf In the Santa Clara area" by CSCOAC::CONWAY_J (Without consensus there is no Law.) Fri Mar 09 1990 08:03

I am currently scheduled to spend a large part of my summer in a
Digital University program. This will have me in Santa Clara, Cal
for all of May, Some of June/July and some of August. So I need some
advice guys, should I take my clubs? Or should I give up golf for the
duration of the school? What's the golf situation in Santal Clara area?
Public Courses , approximate prices, conditions, crowds etc. I would
really appreciate some help here, guys

    Thanks in Advance

BRING YOUR CLUBS!!!! I'm not living in that area any more, but you are
so close to the Monterey Peninsula and Peeble Beach, Spyglass, Spanish
Bay, etc., etc. and I do know some of the Sacramento Courses, which is
two hours the other way(a little farther). I'd try Rancho Murietta
first, last time I played it was $30(probably higher now), but there
are two 18 hole layouts and the Seniors now have a regular stop there.
You could play Ancil Hoffman in Carmichael(Sacto. Suburb) which was
highly rated by Golf Digest and is the one of the best public courses
that I have played - congested, but a single can get on reasonably.
While in Sacramento there is the Haggin Oaks City Course, which is 36,
but divided into an 18 and two 9's, where the Annual State Fair
Tournament is played and the National Public Links has been held here.
Crowded, but a single can easily get on the nines and play each, if not
the 18(play the 18 - shorter, but more interesting) Both Ancil and
Haggin are about $15 (last time for me was $11) for 18. There are many
courses in the SF-Oakland Bay Area, great courses in Napa Valley, bring
your cheese and bread. I've played some private courses such as Round
Hill and Palo Alto Hills, which are great - but you'll need to solicit
an invitation - don't know if they have recipricol play or not with
    your club.

Finally, if you can get to Lake Tahoe, four-five hour drive, you can
play in a scenic area that I feel is the prettiest on earth. The
entire world would have looked like that, but God ran out of money.
Play the Edgewood Country Club at Stateline, NV, expensive ($100, I
think), call for reservations(you can't bribe the starter, or I did not
offer enough), but it was in the Golf Digest top 100. There's another
course in Nevada, but my mind is drawing a blank, which is close in
beauty and challenge. Wait till you get all of a drive at the 6,500 ft
elevation and see what you can do...

Hope that helps. If you want more, I'll go look in my guide and get
you telephones, prices and additional courses.

Bring your clubs. Not familiar with Santa Clara's golf activities, but
Scottsvalley has a nice public golf course and is just east of Santa
    Cruz.

    Keep your left arm straight.

    BRING YOUR CLUBS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There are many courses in the Santa Clara area to play on and the
days will be very long while you are here. Also there will be
several tournaments with the Digital Golf League during that time
frame that you might be able to play in. As Big Mac mentioned, the
Monterey peninsula is only an hour away with several world class
courses also. The Sacramento area has a lot of courses but it will
be much hotter out there than around Santa Clara or Monterey. I
have a copy of the NCGA Bluebook which lists most of the courses
in Northern California so give me a buzz if I can be of assistance.

Isn't Pasatiempo near Santa Cruz? It's a good public course on the
	GD top public course list.

Pasatiempo is located just outside Santa Cruz along with
3 or 4 other really nice courses. There are many, many wonderful
golfing opportunities in the area. You could probably play two
different courses each weekend and a couple during the week
after school and not even put much of a dent in the possibilities.
One caution though, this is a huge state and we think nothing of
taking 2-3 hour drives to get to other courses. There are many
opportunities within the metropolitan area but some of the more
outstanding courses are at least an hour away.
Which facility is the training going to be held in ??
One training center is right across the street from the Santa
Clara Golf and Tennis Club (public).

I played Santa Clara about a month ago, it is approx. 1 mile east
of WRO. Just follow Great America Parkway east. Just past the park
turn right, Doubletree Hotel will be on your left after turning.
About 1/4 mile on the left is the course. I played late in the
afternoon, $5 to play nine, but $8 to rent the clubs. Enjoy
