| | On the par 3's I used to hit off the grass with an iron with good
and bad results. Now I use a tee pushed into the ground so the ball
just sits up off the grass. Gives me better contact I guess because
    the results have been better.

| | I think it is a matter of personal preference how high you like
to tee the ball for a shot but on short irons I like to have the
ball only about a quarter inch above the grass. Some people play
the shot off the turf just like a fairway shot but I agree with
the pros and figure why not take every advantage you can get !!!
I rarely hit a ball fat or thin if I tee it up. Experiment with
different heights and see what works for you !!!

| 872.4 | vary your shot with tee hight... | MAMIE::GORDON |  | Fri Feb 23 1990 13:52 | 11 |
| | I agree with .3...

and by the way...you can vary your shot by how high low you tee
    it...

for a short iron if you tee it about 1/4" you get normal traj. for
the club..teeing higher will give higher traj. teeing lower will
    give a lower traj.

so I agree with .3 experiment and see which works best for you...

| | While a Marshal on the 8th hole at the DEC Seniors Tournament at
Nashawtic C.C. Doug Sanders did the following; Par 3 over water playing
    180 yrd.

Stood with his back to the hole and dropped his heel in the turf to kick up
some earth. He set his ball on top of the mound and with plenty of ball
exposed in the rear dropped it on the green.

I ment to ask someone at the time if that was covered in the Rules
Book. What ever you feel comfortable with !

| 872.7 | Tee it high and let it fly | DICKNS::F_MCGOWAN | Zoot who? | Sat Feb 24 1990 11:34 | 13 |
| | Some of the "old-timers" still prefer hitting off turf with irons
off the tee, a la Doug Sanders, but most clubs prefer that you use a
tee (easier on the tee box). Hitting off turf also allows you to
pinch the ball, which isn't so easy when it's a millimeter or two
off the ground. Since I can't put any backspin on my irons anyway,
this doesn't mean much to me.

Using a tee also allows you to use Chi Chi's line whenever you get
a bad result: "Well, no wonder...the ball was sitting on a piece
    of wood!"

with more in its way...boy, I *love* it here in New England!)

| | Trevino also tees off a mound of turf on par 3's. He hacks his
iron into the turf creating the mound and set's the ball on it.

Myself, I tee my irons the same as my woods off the tee, about
1/4 inch above the turf. I generally graze the turf on my swing
and I have a heck of a time hitting off those rubber tees at driving
ranges that put the ball about 1 inch up!

I don't like to use a tee when I have to tee off with an Iron. I
prefer to just put the ball in a high spot on the grass. The league
I played in over the last 5 years at Amherst CC I always used a tee,
mainly because the tees are in such lousy shape I either can't
find any grass to put my ball or the only grass I find I may damage
it so I leave it alone. So when I do put it on a tee I put it very
low. That way I get the same feel as if hitting off the ground.

| | The pro's almost always tee from about the same spot that their
    previous opponents teed from.
They also tee at the back of a recent divot! That allows them to see
how the previous player "cut thru" the shot(hope they never use mine as
    a template!).

They also always try to "tee on the side of trouble" which means that
they go to the side of the tee where there is water, woods,OB.

My rule of thumb is to tee the ball just as high as you think
an ideal lie would be in the fairway. After all that is the swing
you've got grooved. On the driver I do tee the ball high/low
	on the wind.

| | For me, it depends on how I want to hit the shot, and how far.
An example is, if the shot is to a green where I want the ball to
stop quickly, I'll use a tee, but teed very low, to get nore height
on the shot. Also, if I'm hitting an 8 iron and feel that it is
a little to much, but don't feel comfortable trying to force a 9
iron, then I'll hit the 8, but off a tee, so the ball will go a
little higher, but also a little shorter, without having to hold
back on my swing and only swing at say 70%. But basically, it depends
on the situation. Obviously, if i'm trying to hit a low 175 yard
shot, I won't use a tee, and will move the ball back in my stance
    a little.
