868.0. "L.A. where do I play? HELP!" by MAIL::MCNIEL () Mon Feb 19 1990 13:33

    I am going to be in L.A. the first week in March, and will be hubbed at
    the Long Beach Marriot.

    * Are there any solid public or private (easy to get on) courses in the
      area?

    I played Imperial...it was OK. But, I heard that a NEW course called
    "The Tustin Ranch" is public and just opened up.

    * Are there any others?

    Any help would be appreciated,

My parents live in Fountain Valley (near Irvine) and if you're down that
way you might want to try the Costa Mesa Golf Club (Country Club???, I
don't remember). It's public, relatively cheap (if I remember right appx.
$15 per 18 holes), has 3 nine hole courses that are quite nice but not
particularly long and a driving range. The thing that I couldn't get over
when I was last playing there at Christmas 2 years ago was the excellent
shape that the fairways and greens were in. I was regularly draining 10
to 20 foot putts because the ball wasn't bouncing all over as it rolled
like it does on the dry, chewed-up greens here in Colorado.

Another course that I played was Mile Square Golf Course. I believe it's
in (or very near Costa Mesa) in Mile Square park. Not quite as nice as
Costa Mesa G.C., and relatively flat but not bad. I believe I paid $12
to play 18.
