840.0. "Suggestions for a Getaway Golf Weekend" by BOOKIE::BARBER () Thu Jan 04 1990 13:45

    Every year we get 20 gals (five foursomes) together for our annual
    golf weekend. We usually head toward the Cape, but this year, we
    would like to try someplace different. I am open to suggestions,
    but would like to keep it no longer than 2 hours in distance for
    the drive.

    Someone suggested Lake Mouray (Fairlee, VT), does anyone know anyting
    about this place? What kind of course, greens fees, accomodations,
    etc.?

    If anyone knows of other places that would be accomodating to these
    20 scratch golfers, please let me know. Keep in mind, we want the
    housing to be right on the course.

    Thanks
    M. Barber

840.3Vermont is a great place to goNSG018::STOPERAFri Jan 05 1990 07:5422
    My family holds a tourny every year, we always go to Vermont, we had
    60+ golfers last year, anyway some of the places we've been:

    Killington - good price and nice course

    Snow - home of the golf school - again fair price and nice course

    Stowe - good price and nice course

    Never been to but they do have packages:

    Haystacks - near Snow (about 2 hours from Nashua)

    Quichee - I think it's on the high side again about 2 hours from
    Nashua, but I think it's a great course(s)

    Statton (sp?)- Every time we check it out, it too pricey, but it's a great
    course.

    Re. -1

    I forgot some things:

    Stay in a condo not a motel - much nicer, all the Vermont places have
    millions of condo's around sitting idle during the summer months

    Bargin hard with who ever you talk with, these places want and need
    your $$

    Don't bother to call now, call in March, most places are now geared up
    for the skiers and don't have any info on golf packages yet

840.6Lake Morey golf.TEAOFF::TUFTSWed Jan 10 1990 11:4124
    I played Lake Morey in September on a special deal for the Fall. It was
    $75 for two nights lodging, 2 breakfasts, and 2 dinners and 2 rounds of
    golf. Cart fees were extra. I thought it was a great deal!

    The course was nice, sufficiently challenging for me, but I'm not sure
    it would be for 20 women "scratch" golfers. Where did you ever find
    such a group?

    Lake Morey is in Fairlee, VT. right on the edge of a beautiful large
    lake with clear water. They have great facilites, tennis courts, indoor
    and outdoor pools, free use of boats and canoes, shuffleboard, etc.
    Mid to late September is great for golf and foliage up there. Call and
    ask them to send the info.

    One negative---many senior citizen couples take advantage of these
    great rates and play golf. (Most seemed to have recently taken up the
    game and it can be very slow. But then, scratch golfers should ask to
    be the first five foursomes out that day because no one will come close
    to catching them.

    Enjoy!

    Have you been to Jack O'Lantern in North Woodstock, NH? See note 547
    for more info on packages. I can also get you a copy of the 1990

840.9Wentworth in JacksonDUGGAN::DIAZOctavio @GSBWed Jan 10 1990 13:1420
    I have gone skiing every year to the North Conway area and have
    stayed at the Wentworth Resort Inn in Jackson. They have a golf
    course which is used for X-country skiing in the winter. I have
    asked about it and they told me is a nice course, but then it was the
    Inn people who said so. If someone has played that course I myself
    would like to hear some comments about it.

    In any case I really enjoy staying there, it's a very nice New
    Englandish Inn with superb food at very reasonable prices. I payed
    about $50 per night during Christmas, no meals, because I wanted to
    try several local restaurants which are also very good, but they have
    all-included packages. And Jackson is a very quaint village, apart
    from the traffic of North Conway.

    And then you have all the factory outlets in Conway. I always end up
    spending more there than in skiing, and I was spending over $100 a
    day skiing for my family of four, but you can find very good items at
    a very good price.

840.10Wentworth is worth it!!CSTEAM::GRIFFINWed Jan 10 1990 13:3017
    Re:.9 (Tavo)

    Great little course. I've played 3-4 tournaments there a year over
    the last 10 years. It's a par 69, somewhat on the short side (I
    forget the actual yardage), but tight enough to really make it a
    challenge. It's one of those courses that makes you think. There's
    a couple of very tough holes (#4, a par three, 180 yards uphill
    and narrow!!) and a few giveaways (drivable par 4's). It really
    rewards the good shot and penalizes for the bad. The real problem
    I have with the course is that you can't go straight at the pin
    on most of your shots. You HAVE to play a lot of bump and run.

    Greens fees last year ran about $16-20. Cart extra. The course moves
    pretty well and it's usuall a 3-3 1/2 hour round. My opinion, it's
    well worth it to play if you get the chance.
