833.0. "Tourney results 1990..." by MSEE::KELLEY (Golfoholic - club maker) Tue Dec 19 1989 11:15

Well, the Golf Digest Sweepstakes III is in the January
issue. I thought I would enter it here and anybody that
wants to place your picks can extract this note edit it
and then post it as a reply to this note. BTW, to enter
the Golf Digest Sweeps you need an official entry form,
they are inside the January issue...

*** Note that the Deposit Guaranty Golf Classic is the same
day aas the Masters and only draws those players that do not
    	play in the MAsters...***

Hope this will help a little bit to get us through this
    	great golf weather... ;-)

    	Good luck and enjoy...
    	Gene

833.6example of how to extract and reenter the file...MSEE::KELLEYGolfoholic - club makerFri Dec 29 1989 12:3420

It was brought to my attention that some people are not
familiar with how to extract a note, so here is an example
    	of what to do...

EXTRACT SWEEPS.NOTE 833.0 (this command will take note 833.0
and put it into a file called sweeps.note in your account)

    	exit from notes

use your favorite editor and edit the file SWEEPS.NOTE to
put your picks in for each tournament.

get back into the golf notes file and select note 833

now do the following command REPLY SWEEPS.NOTE (this will
enter a reply to note 833, the text of which is the file
    	sweeps.note that you edited)

Tuned in ESPN a little before 6 yesterday afternoon to catch the
results of round 1 of the Tucson Open, and discovered that Pat McGowan
had shot a 62, and was leading the tournament by 3 strokes at 10
under par. Nice to know that *someone* from the clan has some talent
at this game! Must be a *very* distant cousin....I played Randolph
a couple of years back, and was 10 over after 4 holes.

The winner of the Tucson Open was Robert Gamez...! His first
tour event..! The first player since Crenshaw (1973) to win
his first tour event... I am sure it helped Gamez a LOT to
    	play on his local course...

Re. -1: Yup, a really nice win for the kid; as long as cousin Pat
couldn't be the winner (did he leave town after the first round?),
I was rooting for Gamez all the way. Too bad he couldn't have birdied
(or at least not double-bogeyed) the last hole, but what the heck:
    he won!

As to the home course: It reminded me a little of the tournament
wo last year by Greg (?) Twiggs, on his home course. He hasn't done
anything noteworthy since. Gamez looks as though he may be a force
to contend with in years to come, though (still a little early to
be calling him the "new Trevino").

Is it true that Robert Gamez, who has just won the Tucson Open,
is the first player to win his very first paycheck tournament since
Ben Crenshaw in 1973. I think it was the Southern Open that Crenshaw
    won.
    If so, what an achievement!

Another interesting thing about the tournament was that David Frost
    had an incredible 60 sandwiched between a 1st rnd 70 and a 3rd rnd
71 (don't know how he finished).

Strange has been playing in a lot of the tourneys out of the States,
I know he played a couple in Australia. Don't know where he is this

Curtis played in a Skins game in Australia with Greg, Nick F
and Jumbo Ozaki. He didn't have too good a time of it though
winning just one skin. Jumbo cleaned up and, I think, had a
run of nothing but twos and three over a spell of nine holes.

Curtis also competed in the Australian Masters at Huntingdale,
Melbourne a couple of weeks ago. He shot 12 under and tied for
twelfth place. He did shoot a equal best last round of the day
of 67, but apparently apart from that his game was patchy.

The Doral Ryder was won by Greg Norman on the first playoff hole.
He chipped in an eagle beating Paul Azinger, Mark Cacalvechia, and
    Tim Simpson (SP) .

If you didn't catch any of the action, you really missed an awesome
final round of competition. Norman shot an incredible 62 (-10) breaking
the course record 63. He ended up (-12 for 19 !) Paul Azinger really
should have won it on the 18th, but failed to get an easy pitch shot
close enough to one putt for the win. Paul played a tough shot out of
the rough over water, to a water sloping elevated green, leaving the
ball just off the green... seemed as if it was all over. Paul Azinger
being one of the best at the chip and run shot, faultered... and ran
the ball 8-10' past the cup. Then missed the putt to cause the over
    time round.
It was exciting seeing some of the games big hitters and clutch
players going at it in a Match play format!! Too bad it had to end
on the first hole! I taped the round... I think I'll save this one.

It sure was a great tourney, what a final round...! I think it
was amazing what each of the players did on 18 to cause the
play-off... As Walt mentioned, the Zinger couldn't get up and
down from just of the edge of the green, Norman made a 30ish
footer to save par, and Calcavecchia along with Azinger couldn't
save par, and Simpson made a bird on 18 to get into the play-off.

I was expecting a final round where Azinger and Couples would be
fighting it out in the final group (I would have loved to see
either of them win it, Zinger and Freddie are my top two favorite
players on the tour, not just for their play, but for their

I think his ability to consistently outdrive his opponents is the
most damaging of his talents. Saturday's round especially, Massengale
was coming out of his shoes to keep up with Lee, and it cost him...
he started loosing his tee shots right. The longer the course the
higher the fini$h for Trevino. Very often Lee was hitting a PW-7
while the others were hitting 8-5's... even on a bad day, Trevino
is very tough using those clubs. Did you see him saturday? Par 5
, tee shot 275+, 3 wood 230+ to 20' of the pin, lipped the eagle
putt... tapped in the gimme birdie. It'll be interesting when Jack

Doral was an exciting tournament. I was very surprized that Zinger
and Calcavecchia hit such wayward tee shots on 17 and 18. During an
interview, Mark admitted that his hook on 17 affected his thinking when
he went to 18, where he hit a slice into the trees. Guess it shows that
the PGA pros are not quite the robots that some make them out to be.
Emotion does play a role even at that level. Actually, I was kind of
glad that Norman won. Finally, one of his characteristic Sunday charges
    paid off.
Players for the 1990's ? Yes, put Paul and Mark at the top of the
list. They are young and their games seem to be coming together. Yet, I
wonder if they will be as dominant as we hope. I think that many would
like to see one or two players lead the tour for a few years. Not
measured by dollars won, but rather by victories. Nothing against
parity mind you. Just a nearly weekly shoot-out by handfull of players
    would be exciting.

I read the same thing in the paper. Too bad, because it really
sounds like sour grapes. Possibly because Calcavecchia hit a beautiful
tee shot into the fairway, and a nice 4 iron to 25 feet away. Norman
drew his tee shot into the rough and ran his iron over the green.
But alas, it was the 3rd shot that counted. And most, the announcers
included, thought that if Norman thought he had a decent chance
to nake that chip, that he would have had the pin out. Anyway,
it was a great shot by Norman, and a great tournament. Anytime
you can get 4 guys to play sudden death, you know it was an exciting
finish. And as previously said, Norman has lost enough tournaments
to shots that were great, that could also be condidered, miraculous.
His shot was much less miraculous than the ones by Tway and Mize
    that beat him.

Can you imagine the press Norman would have gotten if his chip shot
had hit the pin and bounced out? His reputation (deserved or not)
as a bonehead would have been forever fixed in history, especially
after all the comments from Venturi and Floyd prior to the shot.
I know I breathed a deep sigh of relief (after first shouting in
jubilation) when the ball dropped cleanly into the cup.

    I didn't see the Calcavecchia statement...wonder if he'll issue
a "clarification" ("Gee, what I *really* meant was..."). I don't
think there was any doubt that Norman was going for that shot all

Seve Ballesteros yesterday won the Renault Majorca Open at Son Vida.
He won at the first extra hole in a play-off with Sweden's Magnus

Seve started the final day five shots adrift at a 15 under par third
round total of 201. Persson had been playing some of his best golf
    with rounds of 65, 65 and 66 against a par of 72.

Ballesteros almost called it a day after two rounds as he was suffering
from flu...Bet he's glad he carried on now 8^)

In the final round Persson was still five up at the turn. On the
10th, he hooked out of bounds and took six. Ballesteros got a birdie
and closed to within two. Persson was still one up on the 18th.
Ballesteros drove 60 yds past Persson who couldn't get home in two.
Seve's approach went into the gallery, but a chip reminiscent of
the one he made at Lytham two years ago left it dead and gave him
the birdie he needed to tie.

    In the play-off (the 18th hole) Persson took a 4-wood. He'd played
1-iron from the tee all week!!! His ball went SPLASH!! Seve won
    it with a par 5.

It was interesting that GOLF magazine has an article on Gamez in the
current issue (April). It pertained to whether or not his winning his
first tour event would be a jinks or not. It was a jinks for people
like Crenshaw, Verplank, and one other person mentioned in the article.
Crenshaw and Verplank both offered the same advise to Gamez, that was
to not change HIS game/swing... Well, I guess he has allready taken
care of the pissible jinks... First year on the tour and wins his first
event and then a second within two months..!!!

I thought I had heard that he hit a 5 iron for the eagle. I know that when he

Norman had the exact same shot and Gamez joked that for Norman it was only a

I didn't watch it yesterday, but on Saturday, Nicklaus did
something similar to what Gamez did to Norman last week. With an
eagle he leapfrogged from being one behind to one ahead. In his
case it was a chip that went in after being behind the green on
        two on a par 5.

The commentator mentioned that Jack had that kind of advantage
over the most of the field in the senior two, of being able to
get on two in most par 5 holes.

Back to the Indepent Insurance tournament for a second.

What did you think about the 2 stroke penalty to Hal Sutton for
"Grounding his club in a hazard ?"

In case you missed it, Hal hit is shot from a muddy hazard. Afterwards
he reached behind him, and washed his club in the water, being that it
was covered with mud. Hal wound up with a double bogey, 6 on the hole.

A few holes later, Hal was in the hunt. Ten under and heading for more.
An official told him he was assessed a two stroke penalty for grounding
his club in a hazard. That knocked hom back to -8. He was visibly
upset and proceeded to bogey the next hole making him -7.

THEN, or so I'm told, the officials recinded their decision, gave Hal
back the two strokes and said "never mind." Talk about nerve rattling.
Hal was never in it again. I believe he was on the 15 or 16 when this
all happened, so he could never get it back..

Did someone hear the official judgement on this whole thing ?

I know I'd be rattled and very, very upset if this has happened to me.

    What do others think ?

        Jim,

I can't believe this happened. After hitting a shot, Hal dipped his
club in the water to wash it off and because of this he was called for
grounding his club in a hazard ? I don't think that this was a proper
    interpetation of the rules.

It seems that the officals jerked him around and rattled him. Too bad.
The officals should have been sure before telling him. This is sad.
Here's a guy that has been struggling and too have all this happen.

I didn't know about this, but if I was Hal Sutton, I would be
quite upset!!! I know I've seen more than one Pro, after hitting
a poor sand shot, take another swing and hit sand, and never be
penalized, which to me, is worse than what Hal did. You should
not be penalized after a shot, unless you are deliberately damaging
the course, or portraying very poor sportsmanship. That official
should be sent back to school to learn the rules before he/she is
allowed to rule again during a PGA tour event.

    I've been a fan of Norman's since his U.S. Open towel-waving incident
with Fuzzy Zoeller. What a class guy. While I don't feel sorry for
him, I am getting tired of all these last minute heroics occuring
    against him :-)!

Sure is ironic, 'cause I was telling my wife as Frost was walking into
the greenside trap on 18 to play his final shot, "he'll be lukcy to get
it close...all he wants to do is make par and get into the playoff."
Did I call that one wrong!! My hat is off to Frost for his second shot
from the fairway bunker...he must carry his _____ in a wheelbarrow.

Also, as greenside bunker shots go, it didn't look that difficult as
far as the pros are concerned. Frost did say he thought he would make
the shot. Which leads me to...

Of all the shots that have single-handedly beat Greg Norman, what are
    the odds of making them?

Bob Tway - greeside bunker in the PGA championship. Uphill lie, huge
lip in front of him, and no green to work with. POOF, its' in the
    hole. Odds? 2 in 10?

Larry Mize - long downhill chip on 11 to win the Masters in 1987. He
had a good lie and plenty of green to work with, but it was a touch
shot all the way. 4 in 10?

Robert Gamez - 175-yard 7-iron that he holes out to beat Norman. 1 in
    20?

David Frost - greenside bunker, plenty of green. 5 in 10?

    Just wondering...

The odds you listed are so much better than they should be.
On Tways shot, the odds og holing out, were probably more like 25
to 1 against. Mizes shot was even worse, probably 100 to 1 and
Frosts shot yesterday had the best chance of going in at about 15
to 1 against. Even Miller said as Frost was about to hit, that
he should have no problem getting the ball to within 4 feet of the
hole, but to put it in, well....
Norman, as usual, was not bitter in defeat. When asked about
the shot and how he felt, he just said, something like, I didn't win
the tornament, I congratulate him for making a great shot. He's
classy even in defeat. What great shots he made on 15, 16 and 18.
He obviously chose the wrong club on the 17th tee, but hindsight
is 20/20. He played a great round and almost pulled it out.

The towel waving incident was during the US Open (forget which year),
anyway Fuzzy Zoeller won in a playoff against Norman. The incident
started the Sunday of the fourth round.

Norman was in the group ahead of Fuzzy, Norman was one shot back on the
18th, he had made a charge all day to keep up with Fuzzy, and was
making incredible shots. Well on the 18th Norman pushed his approach
shot WAY right and pithced to about 40 feet. Announcers said it was
an impossible put. Fuzzy was in the fairway watching. Norman made the
put, Fuzzy thought it was for a bird and the lead, Fuzzy waved a
white towel from the fairway as a sign of surrender. They ended up
in an 18 hole playoff the next day.

Well Fuzzy pretty muched kicked his but and won by about 4-5 shots,
as they got onto the 18th green Norman grabbed a white towell, waved it

Miller sett the scene well. Saying that it was an easy trap shot to
get close, missing right or left comes back to the hole. The the
statistic about Frost's position in sand save this year & being #1
	in the 80's.

Now what you've all been waiting for. My sure fire strategy for
	Greg Norman to win tournaments:

Shoot well enough Thursday thru Saturday to assure a position in the
last group of the day. That way someone in the group after him won't
hole out another miracle shot to win in spite of his great round.

I think Venturi said that "Norman should get the Saturday paper
delivered to his hotel room Thursday morning so that he can go out
there and shoot his record setting scores earlier in the week. It
certainnly would put the pressure on the rest of the field!

The thing that really made me lose my respect of Frosts' sand
save yesterday was when he said he knew that he was going to drop
it in as he was walking up the fairway to the trap, even yet sounding
    cocky about it.

I'm sure if he chipped it 5 feet past the cup and two putted
for a bogey he wouldn't have the attitude that Norman had about
the outcome. My hat is off to Norman, I think and hope that at least
some people will agree with me that Norman doesn't have to prove
anything else to anybody. Granted he did chip in himself at Doral
this year and for once recaptured what was taken from him so many
times but that was only a 10 ft chip to a flat green, QUITE a bit
less lucky than what was needed to beat him. I think that its becomeing
obvious that what you really need is luck to beat the shark. I'm
sure that Norman will be quite prevelent throughout the 90's and
perhaps even into the next century. As a matter of fact, i'm sure
    you can count on it.

You may be missing an important point with successful athletes - they
must be convinced that they will achieve, whatever their goal. When you
can get an athlete to think like Frost, the percentage of success
soars. I would not respect Frost less, but more for convincing himself
that he would hole the shot and then doing it! I believe that what you
heard was a little of the inner workings of all of the successful pros
    - now, if you want to discuss if he should be candid or hide the
process, it is quite a different matter.

IMO, Norman tries too hard to emulate the slow, methodical style of
(formerly Fat) Jack. When he wakes up Sunday, 5 or 10 strokes behind
the leader, he abandons that style and switches to the loose,
aggressive, exciting, style of play that he WAS famous for.

Wake up Greg; you're NOT Jack Nicklaus. PLAY YOUR OWN GAME!

Given Frost's skill with the sand wedge I don't think that is was

I agree with .128, Norman is good enough to go out and bury the field
most of the time if he just plays his own game....if he was to do this
he'd win going away...he hasn't learned what Nicklaus said was one
of "my greatest advantages" When Nicklaus got in the hunt and kept
pressure on the field the whole field knew he'd usually win and they'd
all start playing for second....Norman could accomplish this same thing
if he'd go out in the first round/second round/third round like it was
his last round and by the time sunday rolled around he could go out and
shoot boggie golf and still win cause he'd be so far ahead. It will be
interesting to watch through the 90's to see him mature more as a
    golfer
and when he finally reaches this point you'll see the next true
superstar....he has the game/the guts and just needs more seasoning,
and he will get it then look out....possibly the one to match
    Jones "Grand Slam"???

I couldn't agree more, the point that I was trying to make was
that during a post interview frost came across to me as really cocky
in reguards to making the shot. What would he of said if he didn't
make the shot and 2 putted. Maybe something like " I had this feeling
that I was going to drop it in, but I guess luck just wasn't on my
    side", I really doubt it!

I did like the way that he went for the green in two, most people
would have laid up considering where his shot was and been happy with
a play-off berth but instead be decided to go for it and with luck on
his side pulled it off. After all thats what makes the game exciting

Re - 119: I had exactly the opposite view of the Frost bunker shot,
and said to my wife "He's going to hole it." When she asked why,
I said "Because it will beat Norman, which is what always seems
to happen in situations like this." In truth, I really couldn't
believe it when it rolled in, and blurted out something very close
to what Johnny Miller said ("Gimme a break!" or something like that).
In one sense, as a Norman fan, I'm grateful these "miracle" shots
are being made in non-major tournaments...maybe that will reduce
the odds against it happening to him in the US OPEN/OPEN/PGA.
How many more times can this happen to one guy?

I think Frost played his 2nd shot the way he did, because he
knows how good a bunker player he is, and probably felt the worst
he could do, would be to hit it in the green side bunker, which
he did. He probably felt like he had a better chance of geeting
up and down from there, than he did from 100 yards out in the fairway.
Remember, if he was to play it safe, as you stated, and play his
2nd shot to the fairway, he still would have had to get down in
2 for a par, to force a playoff.
I too, was a little surprised by his comment right after making
the shot on 18. When he said I knew I was going to make it, I thought
it was a little to cocky. I'm not saying he shouldn't have felt
that way, just that he could have said it better, like "I knew I
could get it close, but it went in!". As Norman said, once again
he lost to a great shot. And great shots in pressure situations
are to be rewarded, not criticised. My hats off to both these players
for another exciting finish on Sunday.

Yup, I read in the paper last night that Frost says his strategy is
to AIM for the bunkers on many occasions. Keeps him from getting in
more trouble and, with his skill and success from the sand, is his
shot of preference over a pitch from the fairway. I think we all
echoed Johnny Miller's words when it went in, "You gotta be kidding me!"
It really has happened too many times to Norman to be believed if we
hadn't seen it with our own eyes.

I can identify with that. I'm a decent bunker player, when I've had
a chance to practice. If there are two hazards like a pond to carry
on one side and tight bunkering on the other, I'll aim towards the
     bunker, not the pond.

There was an open mike near him to pick up the sound of the club

Norman is the one that really should have the right to say it.

Touche. I should have said a ravine & a bunker, or something "more"
playable out of. Though I do know people who would rather loose a ball
and take a stroke penalty than having to play out of a trap.

Good pond players. Well several players have tried to get the ball
up & down from Rae's Creek with varying levels of success. Other than
that all that comes quickly to mind is "Have you heard the joke about

Also at the English Open this week, Sam Torrance fell foul of the
'waiting for the putt to drop' rule. His eagle putt hovered on the edge
of the hole for 25 seconds (according to the PGA spokesman who went to
watch TV to find out) before dropping. Sam called it a 2 but was
    promptly 'corrected' by officials.

He claimed that although he was waiting for it to drop, in his opinion
it hadn't come to rest and thus legally he could not hit it.

He didn't seem to upset by the decision, howeverm and it gave the TV

Ian Woosnam is the Suntory World Matchplay Champion for 1990.

Yesterday he defeated Mark McNulty of Zimbabwe 4 & 2 over 36 holes in
the final at Wentworth. Woosnam wins 100,000, McNulty picks up 60000.

The morning 18 was pretty close until the last three holes all of which
Woosnam won to go in 3 up. The score stayed that way for the first six
holes of the final 18 at which point McNulty had a run of three wins.
Back came Woosnam at the next, a short par three which McNulty
eventually conceded after missing th green by a mile. Woosnam also won
the 12th and 15th holes. He then put his approach to within a few feet
at the 16th and McNulty missed his chance of a birdie.

As this event is not on the European Tour list, ironically McNulty
still leads the Order of Merit from Woosnam, about 8k separating them.

The third and fourth place play-off was between Greg Norman and Chip
Beck. After their 18 holes and two extra, they decided to call it a
    day.

    Results of note were:-

    Thursday matches:-

    Ronan Rafferty beat Seve Ballesteros 8 & 6. (shot about a 62).

    Friday's matches:-

Chip Beck beat Nick Faldo 2 & 1

Mark McNulty beat Hale Irwin 6 & 4

Greg Norman beat Wayne Grady at 38th.

Ian Woosnam beat Ronan Rafferty 5 & 4?

    Semi-final:-

    Woosnam beat Beck

    McNulty beat Norman

Overall a great tournament. Good to see Norman over here again, even
though he wasn't at his best. Woosnam proved a worthy winner playing
some fantastic golf, particularly in the final.

    Yes, a good tournament.

Interesting comment by one of the TV crew about Norman, that he seems
so serious these days. Seve went through a similar phase, when he
cheered up a bit, he won the British Opens at St Andrews and Lytham.
The Lytham win in particular was characterised by Seve actually smiling
    while on the course.

Also, Woosnam commented how mentally draining the matchplay tournament
is - 36 holes each day instead of 18.

It's always an interesting tournament to watch, although probably best
on TV. At best there's only ever 4 matches on the course, so the crowds
    are quite dense.

    Paul,

I went to Wentworth on the Pro-Am day (Wednesday). It was by far the
best idea if you wanted to see any golf (I saw the weekend crowds on
the TV!). We walked round with Seve in the morning and there were less
than 20 of us following his group. He was closely followed by McNulty
and then Woosnam, so we got to see some great players in the morning.
It got even better in the afternoon as we were able to pick up on
Norman and Faldo and watch them play 10 or so holes.

Even on the pro-am day Seve looked pretty serious, although his caddy
Vicente obviously told him a good spanish joke half way round. Norman
on the other hand seemed okay and was talking to his playing partners
quite a lot. I didn't think he looked too serious until the 16th when
he probably knew he was beaten. But he seemed to take defeat really
well, at least that's how it came over on TV.

36 holes in a day is a fair walk. Woosnam should think of poor McNulty,
he did it for four days! Still they don't have bags to carry or
trolleys to pull like you and I.

BTW does Bruce Critchley get on your nerves as much as he does mine??
    Talk about critical!!

I kept on reading in the Boston Globe the results of this tornament, but

It seems that since the Football season started the golf TV season is

If it's okay by you guys, I'm happy to put in the tournament results
for the season. As the European tour has only just started I'll start
from the week ending Feb 24th when the first European event was
    completed.

I'll check up on the USPGA results to date and enter them in one go.

I'll also show the latest money lists after the events and where the US
and European teams are as far as Ryder Cup selection is concerned.

Although I'll know the results a few days beforehand I'll wait until
I've got all the details from my Golf Weekly mag before entering in this
    note.

Ted Schulz won the LA Open by one shot from Jeff Sluman. Only four
shots covered the first eleven places. It was Schulz's second career
    win and earnt him $180,000.

Apparently, earlier in his career Schulz was a ranger at Bermuda Dunes
CC in Palm Springs where he used to drive the tractor to pick up balls.
He went through five qualifying schools and has spent time on the Asian
    Tour.

His victory was achieved with seven straight pars on the final seven
holes. He scored in the 60's each day... a great achievement for the
Riviera course. Sluman missed a five foot putt on the last to tie.

                   France - Feb28-Mar3
    -----------------------------------------------------------------

The second event of the Euro Tour was won by Ian Woosnam of Wales.
He was successful in defending the title he also won last year.
Woosnam completed the 72 holes in 5 under on 279. He snatched victory
from England's Mike McLean who unfortunately finished bogey, bogey,
    double-bogey for 280.

With three to play Woosnam was four behind and then had a birdie at 17.
He ended with a last round 67 compared to McLean's 71. McLean had
actually led the tournament from the first day after an opening 66.

However, Woosnam said afterwards that despite never giving up, this was
his least satisfying of all victories as a result of McLean's poor
finish. However, coming second has proved that Mike McLean has now
recaptured his game again after two or three years in the doldrums
after showing great promise a few years ago. He won the Portugese Open
at the end of last season and may be a contender for the Ryder Cup in
    September.

Jose Maria Olazabal was joint third with fellow countryman Miguel
    Martin on 282.

    Scores:-

    J Van Der Velde 285 10046
    Daniel Silva 285 10046

Woosnam now heads for the US to play in a few tournaments before
Augusta. One other interesting point is that Olazabal was fined 250
for staging a sit-down strike after he was plugged in a bunker and
complained that there was too much sand in them.

The Order Of Merit after the Mediterranean Open is as follows:

    Phil,

Is Ballesteros playing at all this year? The Boston Globe only
publishes a short list of players in European events, so it's
difficult to find out if he is playing at all. If he is, I don't
remember seeing his name, menaning he is not finishing in the top
    10-15 players.

    Tavo,

Seve is competing this year, although you're right...you wouldn't
think so! However, he played in a skins game at the start of the year
in the Canary Islands and actually came out tops ahead of Lyle,
    Woosnam and Olazbal.

His first event on the European Tour was last weekend at the Open
De Baleares in Majorca. He was last after three rounds after just
making the cut. I think he finished joint 33rd, but I'll check and
give a full report next Monday. I think he's going to play in a few
USPGA tournaments prior to the Masters.

He seems to have changed his posture and is now standing closer to the
ball giving him a more upright swing path. Still he hasn't got long to
get it right before the Masters.

USPGA Tour: Doral Ryder Open, Miami, Florida. Feb 28-Mar 4
    ----------------------------------------------------------

Rocco Mediate won the Doral Ryder Open in a play-off against Curtis
Strange. It went to just one extra hole where Mediate sank a 5 foot
birdie putt. Strange had already missed his 10 foot birdie chance.

The event was not completed until Monday morning as a result of poor
weather on Sunday. Mediate birdied the final two holes at The Blue
Monster course to tie with Strange at 12 under par.

Mediate went to the top of the money list and also qualified for the
World Championship of Golf to be held in Jamaica in December.

Major talking points over the weekend included a 63 from Jack Nicklaus
on Friday and the turnaround in the playing conditions at the weekend
when winds reached over 50 mph. This followed calm conditions which
returned again on Monday. Mediate's win was also the first for a player
on the USPGA Tour using a long handle putter.

European Tour: Open De Baleares, Palma, Majorca Mar 7-10
    --------------------------------------------------------

Gavin Levenson of South Africa won the Balearic Open in Majorca by
a single shot from England's Stephen Richardson with Jose Maria
Olazabal a further shot away in third place.

It was Levenson's first win on the European Tour for twelve years
and was achieved with three birdies in the last seven holes. That
gave him a 6 under 282. After a very mediocre start on the first
two days, he had rounds of 67 and 69 to come from the pack.
Levenson was only 119th on the tour last year, just high enough to
    retain his card.

Richardson has continued his great start to the season, after having
won the opening event. The 24 year old now heads the money list and
( as predicted...8^) ) is on course to make the Ryder Cup team. It was
only mistakes at two par 3's on the back nine that cost him victory
    again.

For those Seve fans, he just made the halfway cut with the exact
qualifying score of 148. However, this was followed by a 78 in round
three to put him last. He scored 68 on Sunday to haul him up the board,
but there's no consistency there at the moment.

USPGA Tour: Honda Classic, Coral Springs, Florida. Mar 7-10
    -----------------------------------------------------------

Steve Pate achieved his first win in three years in the Honda Classic.
In the end he had a three shot margin over his nearest rivals, Canadian
    Dan Halldorson and Paul Azinger.

The event is passed up by a lot of tour players with Greg Norman being
quoted as saying "this is a joke" as he fought to control the ball in
40mph winds. He has said he will not return next year. Steve Pate said
that if he had played badly he wouldn't return either.

Pate shot a closing 75 to give him a 9 under score of 279. Whilst many
of his rivals ran up double and triple bogeys with regularity, Pate had
    just one double all week.

The main talking point afterwards was Pate's ordeal on the final hole.
After driving way right to avoid OOB, he was forced to play from thick
rough. His second shot flew the green and buried itself in a bank. The
ball couldn't be found despite help from all quarters. Eventually with
just 15 seconds of his allocated time remaining it was found and he was
given a free drop. He two putted and got a bogey 5.

European Tour: Catalan Open, Tarragona, Spain. Mar 14-17
    --------------------------------------------------------

After several high finishes in the first few tournaments of the season,
Jose Maria Olazabal decimated the rest of the field in the Catalan Open
to win by six shots. He finished at 17 under par on 271 with Ireland's
David Feherty being second on 277 and England's Mike McLean recording
another high finish in third. Find of the season, Stephen Richardson
    was fourth.

Olazabal set up victory with rounds of 66,68 and 64 over the par 72
course. On Sunday, strong winds caused scores to increase but Olazabal
still was only one over for his round. The win, his tenth in Europe,
earnt him 50000 and took him ahead of Greg Norman in the Sony
    Rankings.

Whilst victory was secure at the finish Olazabal had scares in the
final round when he dropped four shots on the front nine. Feherty
closed and had great confidence after a 61 on Saturday. However,
Olazabal was more solid in the home straight.

Seve Ballesteros again missed the cut after rounds of 70 and 77. His
game currently includes snapped hooks and ballooned slices. He also
missed a 6 inch one handed tap-in putt!!

USPGA Tour: Nestle International, Bay Hill, Orlando. Mar 14-17
    --------------------------------------------------------------

In a rain reduced event limited to 54 holes, Andrew Magee won the
Nestle International at Bay Hill. Magee finished three rounds on
203, 13 under par. This left him two shots clear of Tom Sieckmann,
with Mark Calcavecchia and Steve Pate finishing a further shot
    adrift in third place.

The third round was itself spread over two days and was not completed
until Sunday morning. Whilst some players had started their fourth
round these were declared void when the tournament committee decided
that the leaders would not even be able to start until Monday.

Magee shot a third round 66 which proved decisive and gave him a cheque
    for $180,000.

Europeans who played in the tournament all faired well with Woosnam,
Langer and Faldo all making the top ten, six shots behind Magee. Lyle,
however, failed to make the cut after two 74's. Faldo had only two
bogeys in three days, fewer than any other player.

It was good to hear that the tournament host, Arnold Palmer made the
cut and ended three rounds within ten shots of Magee. Great going for
    a 61 year old!

Steve Richardson recorded his second tour victory in the space of five
weeks with a three shot win in Portugal. Richardson has had finishes of
1st, 29th, 2nd, 4th and now 1st in the events so far. Not surprisingly
he heads the Volvo Order of Merit by over 40000.

Veteran Brian Barnes who partnered Richardson told reporters that
Richardson is the best thing in European golf since Olazabal.
Richardson, whose dad finished 13th in the Open in 1970, now wants to
beat that. At just 24, he has failed to qualify five times already.

Victory was achieved in difficult conditions with near gale-force winds
blowing in off the Atlantic. Second was Argentina's Vicente Fernandez
with Ireland's Jim Heggarty third. Richardson is now a long way towards
qualifying for automatic selection for the Ryder Cup team in September.
He has posted over-par rounds only twice in the twenty he has completed
so far this year and has got 83 birdies and two eagles to his credit.

It's really nice to see a local lad come good. Last year he was struggling
for sponsership and a local business man in the Lee-on_solent area I
believe came up with some money for him.

Bet he doesn't have trouble now finding a sponser!

Ian Woosnam recorded his first victory in the USA just a few weeks
before the Masters. It was Woosnam's second victory in three outings
this year, having won the Mediterranean Open earlier in the month.
He was also joint seventh in the Nestle International.

The victory moved Woosnam up to third in the Sony World Rankings behind
Faldo and Olazabal. He feels he deserves to be higher and the fact that
he is yet to win a major is counting against him.

His win came in a sudden death play-off against Jim Hallet after both
had tied on 13 under par 275. He started Sunday's round three shots
behind Hallet, but quickly cut the gap with a 25 foot birdie on the
first. With further birdies on 3 and 4 the gap was gone. He then had
more birdies on 8, 11 and 12 to take him 14 under, a lead of four
    shots.

Once both the early round charges of Nicklaus and Watson had faltered,
it was left to Tom Sieckmann and Jim Hallet to take up the chase.
Sieckmann had birdies on 13, 16 and 17 put him within one of Woosnam.
He then drove into the water and double-bogeyed the 18th. Woosnam also
bogeyed the 18th but still shot 67. Hallet needed a birdie to tie and
    got it on the 18th.

In sudden-death, the first hole was parred. It was decided at the next,
the par-3 17th. Hallet bunkered and didn't get up and down, whilst
Woosnam hit the heart of the green and safely two putted. Hallet now
misses out on an invitation to the Masters.

Whilst Woosnam was just about pre-tournament favourite, there were no
other winners from this season's US Tour competing.

Sweden's Anders Forsbrand snatched victory in the Volvo Open with a
brilliant last round 65. That left him one shot ahead of England's
Barry Lane with Mark Roe and Sam Torrance two shots further back.

The tournament was quite a family affair since for two rounds Anders
brother, Vilhelm was leading. Vilhelm was, however, involved in a
"cheating" row on Saturday and eventually he slipped away with a final
    round 77.

Anders Forsbrand has spent many hours working with coach David
Leadbetter who has remodelled Nick Faldo's game so successfully. It's
be a dramatic turnaround as he missed 15 of the first 18 cuts last
season. He may now gain entry to the Ryder Cup team in September and
would be the first Swede to do so.

Forsbrand's final round included 8 birdies and left him at 14 under
par. He says he keeps Nick Faldo's instructional video with him so as
to check the basics often and has also hired Faldo's old caddie Andy
Prodger who knows the Leadbetter method well.

Order of Merit leader Steve Richardson missed the cut after rounds of
73 and 74. He says he needs a rest and I guess he can afford to have
    one!!

Australian Steve Elkington won the Players Championship at the TPC at
Sawgrass, Florida. He had a one shot win over Fuzzy Zoeller after
making a sensational birdie on the 72nd hole.

Elkington, does not readily come to mind when reeling off great
Australian golfers, but his second win on the USPGA Tour should rectify
that. His swing has infact been voted third best on the tour by his
fellow-professionals. He plays now totally on the US Tour and has
qualified for a 10 year exemption.

He shot a 33 over the back nine on Sunday in gusty winds and under
enormous pressure. The birdie on the last typified his performance.
His final round 68 saw him make up four shots on overnight leader Paul
Azinger. Azinger had a last round 74 and it was left to Fuzzy Zoeller
to take up the challenge , which he did superbly. He could have won had
he taken a few of the many birdie chances he had in the final few
holes. The crowd were certainly pitching for a Fuzzy win!

The tournament included all the top Europeans with Langer finishing
highest joint 6th. Both Lyle and Olazabal missed the halfway cut. In
some eyes the tournament is seen as the fifth major.

Whilst a small number of Europe's top players were battling it out at
Augusta, most of the journeymen of the European Tour braved the cold to
    compete in the Jersey Open.

The tournament was won by Sam Torrance. Torrance does not receive an
invite to the Masters, so had to 'make do' with the first prize of
33330. However, he does feel that all members of Ryder Cup sides
should get invitations to all majors.

Torrance won with a 9 under par score of 279 which was one shot better
than England's Mark Davis. The wind played a major factor over the four
days. Torrance flew the green with a wedge on the 165 yd 1st and
needed only a wedge to reach the green in two at the 522yd 2nd.

Torrance led after three rounds and despite a last round of one over 73
he still secured his first win of the season.

The Masters, Augusta National, Georgia. Apr 11-14.
    -------------------------------------------------

Wales' Ian Woosnam pulled off a fantastic victory in the 55th US
Masters at Augusta National. It was his first major championship win
and came just two weeks after his first victory on US soil.

As always the Masters lived up to its reputation of being a tournament
that goes right to the wire and this year it was decided on the final
    green.

Woosnam holed a six foot putt on the last to leave himself at 11 under
par on 277, one shot ahead of fellow European Jose-Maria Olazabal.
Four Americans tied for third place on 279 - Tom Watson, Steve Pate,
    Ben Crenshaw and Lanny Wadkins.

The Sunday developed into a great battle between Woosnam, Watson and
Olazabal. They all came to the 72nd hole at 11 under. Olazabal, playing
in the group infront of Woosie and Watson found two bunkers on the last
and he slipped to a bogey five. Watson then hit his drive into trees
and then found the greenside bunker. Despite a good attempt at saving
par his putt slipped by and he ended up three putting for a d-b six.
It was only Woosnam who made par. He hit his drive way left over the
bunkers and left himself a tricky 8-iron uphill to the green. He was
just short, but two putts later he was the 1991 Master.

The world's top two players according to the Sony Rankings finished
first and second. Woosnam now heads the US Money List.

The leaders knew during their last round that they could afford few
slips, since Steve Pate had posted a great last round 65 to be leader
in the clubhouse for a long time at 9 under. It nearly proved to be
    good enough.

Defending champion Nick Faldo didn't really get going until the third
round and was never really in a position to challenge for the title.

It was great to see Nicklaus and Watson turning on the style on the
second day. It was unfortunate that Jack fell away at the end with a
    76.

USPGA Tour: Deposit Guaranty Classic, Mississippi. Apr 11-14
    ------------------------------------------------------------

Whilst the Masters was being contested, those who weren't invited
    continued on the regular Tour.

The Deposit Guaranty Classic was won by Larry Silveira, a 25 year old
pro playing his third year on tour. He won in a three way play-off over
Russ Cochran and Mike Nicolette after they all tied 72 holes on 266.
He birdied the first extra hole.

He was five shots back at the start of the final round, but made
numerous birdies to shoot a seven under par 63.

Silveira has quite a reputation for being baby-faced with many people
thinking he only looks about 16 or 17.

European Tour: B & H International, St. Mellion, England. Apr 18-21
    -------------------------------------------------------------------

Bernhard Langer achieved a determined victory to win the Benson &
Hedges International played at the Jack Nicklaus designed course at St.
    Mellion in Cornwall, England.

The golf was played in very low temperatures causing players to wear up
to five layers of clothing. They also had to contend with fierce winds
all which added up to scores being very high. This was the sternest
playing conditions that the European Tour pros have faced in many a
    year.

The victory was Langer's 24th European success. He finished with a last
round 70 to record a 2 under par total of 286. This was two shots
better than Fiji's Vijay Singh with Spain's Jose Rivero a stroke
    further back.

Langer had a brilliant homeward nine of 32 including 4 birdies.

It was a bad weekend for new Masters champion Ian Woosnam who missed
the cut after two rounds of 82. Not surprising following a week of
celebrations. Nick Faldo also had rounds of 80 and 82 to finish in
    joint 47th place.

Rivero was leading coming in to the last day, but a triple bogey 7 at
the 13th put paid to his chances. However, he had a spirited finish
with birdies on 15 and 16 for a last round 77.

Order of Merit leader Steve Richardson had another high finish in joint
5th place and stays well ahead in the table. Only Langer finished below
par all week whilst th halfway cut was set at 12 over!

Davis Love III won the Heritage for the second time in five years with
a two shot victory over Australia's Ian Baker-Finch. Love finshed at 13
under par on 271. At one stage he enjoyed a four stroke lead, but this
was eaten up and he only regained it over the closing holes with a
birdie at 16 and pars on 17 and 18.

Love was known for his driving distance when he first appeared on the
tour, but now, despite still being a long hitter, he has concentrated
more on accuracy and this has paid dividends for him.

Baker_Finch who had rounds of 64-65 on Friday and Saturday had the lead
at one point on Sunday but a three putt on 13 cost him dear. Even
though he got a share of the lead back with a birdie at 15, a bogey at
the par 3 17th and another at the 18th left him two shots adrift.

The tournament had some noted absentees namely Masters Champion Ian

England's Andrew Sherbourne secured his first tournament win in Spain
with a closing 66 for a 16 under par total of 272. Sherbourne came from
three strokes behind with one round to play to edge out Spain's Miguel
Angel Martin by one stroke. However, the field at Madrid was one of the
weakest for many a year. Sherbourne dropped just three shots to par all
    week.

Miguel Martin just misseda 20ft birdie putt at the 18th to force a
play-off. He had to settle for second place, his fourth top-seven
finish of the season to put him fourth in the Order of Merit.

Ireland's David Feherty, a probable Ryder Cup player this year, won the
Cannes Open in France at the weekend. It was his fourth European Tour
    victory.

Feherty got a birdie on the last to win by three shots from Australia's
Craig Parry. He broke 70 in all four rounds a sign of his consistency.
Remarkably, he dislikes the pressure of tournament golf and says if he
didn't need the money he would fling the clubs into the Mediterranean.
Feherty is the man who lead Ireland to victory in last year's Dunhill
    Cup at St. Andrews.

Leader in the Order of Merit Steve Richardson again had a high finish
in fourth place and is now almost guaranteed of a Ryder Cup place.
Feherty himself moved into second place in the table.

Nick Price of South Africa achieved his first US tour win for almost
eight years in winning the Byron Nelson Classic at the TPC course at
    Las Colinas.

He shot a 10 under par total of 270 to win by just one shots from Craig
Stadler with four players tied in third place. Price's ten year
exemption achieved following his win in the World Series in 1983 was
starting to run out, so victory was needed.

Leading after three rounds was Tom Kite after two 66's and a 68.
However with the worsening weather, conditions were difficult on Sunday
and this left the tournament wide open. Kite amde history on the back
nine when he was subject to an instant replay judgement call after
wrongly dropping his ball after hitting into a lake. TV had been used

Argentina's Eduardo Romero achieved a remarkable victory in the Spanish
Open following a marathon play-off with Seve Ballesteros. First he
holed a 20ft putt for a birdie at the 72nd hole to tie Seve on 13 under
par 275. Then in the play-off which lasted almost two hours another
birdie on the 18th green gave Romero victory. The play-off had lasted
    for seven holes.

Ballesteros was fresh from a win in Japan, his first in 14 months. He
started the week with a course record 63, although Romero matched this
on day two. However, even then many thought Ballesteros would get his
47th European Tour win! Seve was using a new metal driver and a new
putter, both of which he got in Japan.

After three rounds Seve was three ahead on 16 under par, but the last
day saw him make 7 bogeys in 16 holes and he finished with a 75, being
caught by Romero with a 72.

Fiji's Vijay Singh came third, his third top-four finish in the last

Corey Pavin achieved his second win of the season in Atlanta beating
Steve Pate in a play-off at the second extra hole. He came up almost
unnoticed as Tom Kite and rising star Mike Springer fought for the lead
over the final 36 holes. Pavin just plodded along with his odd swing.
In fact he never led until he won the tournament with a par at the 74th
    hole.

Pavin climbed to NO.1 on the money list with a career best $634092.

Heavy rains fell before the tournament to leave the course very wet.
Being able to tee it up meant scores would be good and Fred Funk shot a
62 in round one. However a 77 on day two was a different story!

The third round was carried over to Sunday for many and at the end of
it Tom Kite led by one from Springer. But he had too many bogies in the
final 18 holes. Springer too made mistakes that cost him the win.

Kenny Perry achieved his first USPGA Tour win in a play-off over
veteran Hale Irwin at their first extra hole by getting a birdie.
The pair had tied 72 holes on a 15 under par score of 273.

Perry shot a record-breaking second round of 63 on the Nicklaus
designed course. The 63 included a bogey, a hole-in-one and eight
birdies. He followed that with a 69 to maintain his lead going into the
final day. Irwin shot a 65 on Saturday, but he was still 5 shots behind
Perry. Irwin is the only man to have made the cut on all 16 occasions
that the tournament has been held. On Sunday Irwin got 6 birdies in 8
holes and charged to a 66. The only other main challenger, Corey Pavin
was making too many pars and not enough birdies.

In the play-off, Irwin hit several bad shots, while Perry got on in two
    at the par 5 15th.

The event was the first sight the US public have had of Europe's new
star Steve Richardson following an invitation from Jack Nicklaus.
Unfortunately, he missed the cut by one shot with a 75/74. Nicklaus
compared Richardson to a young Lanny Wadkins in his competitve

In what turned out to be a dramatic last day's play, Seve Ballesteros
recorded his first European Tour win since March 1990. He gained
victory by winning a play-off at the first extra hole over Scotland's
Colin Montgomerie with a brilliant birdie 3.

Ballesteros' week was a combination of brilliance and blunders, some of
the latter almost costing him victory when he had looked a certain
winner. He frittered away a a two shot lead with three holes to play,
the relatively simple par 4 16th and the birdeable par 5's at 17 and
    18.

In the play-off, Seve had a lucky bounce off a golfcart following a
hooked tee-shot. The ball landed back in the semi-rough. Then he nailed
a 5 iron 220 yds to within 3 feet. Montgomerie just missed the green
with his second shot, but played a great chip to within a few inches.
Seve, duly slotted his birdie putt home.

To win was even more satisfying for Seve as the field contained all the
top names on the European Tour in what is considered to be only next in
line to the Open as Europe's most prestigious tournament.

Montgomerie scored a good last round 67 to tie Ballesteros at 17 under
par 271. He got birdies at 17 and 18 to go one clear of Ireland's
Eammon Darcy. Top Europeans, Faldo and Woosnam did not feature in the
shake-up. Faldo didn't get going until a third round 65 which he
followed with a 70 after three putting the last to end at 274. Woosnam,
despite a 66 in day 3 could only make level par on the last day to end
    at 278.

Ballesteros had a two shot lead after Saturday's round following rounds
of 67-69-65 over Bernhard Langer. By the 15th Ballesteros had a cushion
of two over Darcy in the clubhouse and three over Montgomerie who was
on the 17th. But he bogeyed the 16th whilst Montgomerie birdied at 17.
Seve then bogeyed the long 17th after hitting an iron off the tee into
the trees, whilst Montgomerie birdied the last to go one infront. On
the 18th Seve's second shot finished short left of the green and his
chip left him a 6ft putt to get his birdie and tie Montgomerie. He got
    it! Brilliant stuff!

Seve now goes second in the Order of Merit behind Steve Richardson who
    finished nine off the lead.

Tom Purtzer scored his first win for three years with a three shot
margin over David Edwards, Scott Hoch and Bob Lohr at the Colonial
Country Club. He made a great Sunday charge with a last round 64 to
leapfrog the 14 other players who were ahead of him at the start of
the day. Only one of the 14 shot under par. It was Purtzer's fourth
    US Tour victory.

His 64 included a remarkable shot at the 13th hole where he got a
birdie by holing a bunker shot...played with a putter. With the ball in
the back and the water directly behind the pin he chose not to risk a
sand wedge. The ball rolled through the sand, over the lip, hit the
    flag and dropped.

European Tour: Dunhill Masters, Woburn, England. May 30-June 2
    --------------------------------------------------------------

Just six days after winning the European PGA Championship at Wentworth,
Seve Ballesteros won again at Woburn to clinch the Dunhill British
    Masters title by three shots.

This week there was not such high drama, but once again the cushion
that Seve had going into the final round was disappearing at the end.
The win takes Seve to the No 1 position in the Volvo Order of Merit
(See below), overtaking Steve Richardson in the process.

In the last five weeks, Seve has been third and first in Japan, Second
in Spain, and first twice in England.

Ballesteros finished at 13 under par 275 despite a last round 75. Five
players tied for second place at 10 under. After three rounds of 66, 66
and 68 he had a seven stroke lead over the rest of the field which
included Mark Calcavecchia. As in the last round of the PGA, Seve had
problems in the final round. After three holes, he was back to 13
under. In the end he came to the par 5 18th needing at worst a seven to
win. He got a par 5.

The battle for second place was exciting with birdies up for grabs on
the closing holes. Nobody could claim outright second and each of Keith
Waters, Sam Torrance, David Gilford, Eammon Darcy and Tony Johnstone
won over 27000. Other stars of Europe such as Langer, Faldo and
Olazabel were absent. US amateur Chris Patton also took part but failed
to make the cut after rounds of 79-72.

Billy Andrade won the Kemper Open in a play-off over Jeff Sluman at the
first extra hole. Both players had recorded 21 under par totals of 263.

Andrade was two shots behind with three to play, but birdies at both 16
and 17 tied the lead. Up ahead, Sluman just missed a birdie putt and
had to settle for par on the 18th. Andrade then put his second shot
into the sand at 18. He got out to 3 feet and holed the putt. The two
friends went to the par 3 17th, where Andrade hit it to 7 ft and Sluman
found water. Sluman could only make double-bogey whilst Andrade holed
    his putt.

Zimbabwean Tony Johnstone retained his Murphy's Cup title in the same
manner as he won it last year.... with a play-off victory over
    Ireland's Eammon Darcy.

He came with a late charge making birdies at 16 and 17 and an eagle 3
at 18 during the regulation play. He then followed this up with another
eagle at the second extra hole, the 18th, to win top prize of 58330.

The Murphy's Cup is played using a modified stableford system of
scoring which awards zero pts for a par, 2 for a birdie, 4 for an
eagle, -1 for a bogey and -2 for d-bogey or worse.

Johnstone, who had come joint-second in the Dunhill Masters the week
before, notched up 40 points. Darcy also finished at 40 points after a
last hole birdie. He is now third in the Ryder Cup standings with over
130,000 to his name. One more good finish will guarantee the 38 year
old a place in the team.

Third place came Australian Peter O'Malley and local boy Stephen Field,

    ---------------------------------------------------------------

Billy Andrade kept up his good form from the previous week to secure
his second successive win with a two shot margin in the Buick Classic.
In the process Andrade beat such illustrious names as Irwin,
Ballesteros, Norman, Azinger, Couples, Stewart, Faldo and Olazabel.
Many of the above were using the Buick as their last opportunity of
competitive golf before the US Open.

Andrade showed no signs of the exhaustion he must have felt following
his win in the Kemper Open. He had to play 36 holes in the US Open
qualifier on the Monday after that first win!

In the end it came down to Andrade's solid play over the final 9 holes.
While all around him were dropping shots, he was the only one to play
the back nine holes below par. Hale Irwin who led after 54 holes fell
away with a 73 against Andrade's 68. Seve Ballesteros was also in with
a good chance of making it three wins in a row, but bad teeshots over
the closing holes cost him dearly.

Second place went to Brad Bryant on 275 with third place being shared
by Hale Irwin and Nolan Henke (who not everyone seems to think can
    play).
