828.0. "Video Tape your round?" by TFH::FERRAGUTO () Wed Dec 13 1989 14:06

I had an "IDEA" this summer on a way to make a few dollars
on the side and would like bounce it off the noters ...

My Idea was to accompany a golfer or party with my camcorder
and video tape each of the shots for 9 or 18 holes. I would
add narration descibing the circumstances for each shot , or
a shot of the score card, or even add music. In the end you
have a record of your round, that can help you check out your
stroke in all of the odd situations that come up and maybe
    help you improve your game...

    I figured if I paid myself $10.00 an hour,$6.00 for a tape
and maybe a couple hours of editing time $76.00 would cover it.

Would somthing like that interest anyone out there ????

Has someone already thought of it???

828.1Video -- Great IdeaBOOKIE::BARBERWed Dec 13 1989 15:0214
I think it is a great idea! In fact, a bunch girls (20) go down
to the Cape every fall to golf, and this year one of the gals brought
a Camcorder with her. We had so much fun watching everyone's swing,
stance, putting, tee-shots. etc....that we said it would be so nice
to be able to have someone tape a round of golf, just so you could
see yourself, and maybe correct somethings that needed it. When
my husband saw the tape, he too agreed that he would like to have
a video of himself, to try and correct some things.

I think many serious golfers would definitely be interested in
it. I'll be watching to see if it gets off the ground.

    Hi Tom,

Videotaping golf is a lot of fun... friends and I taped 9 holes
and enjoyed watching later. The difficult part is being able to follow
the shot, and see the results of your swing. Seems you either zoom-in
on the swing itself, and loose the result... or attempt tracking the
flight then zooming in on the ball landing etc. The best shots were
when the camera angle showed the player viewed from behind the green,
you could semi zoom-in then back away and (Look out if it's a deep
hit!!!) follow the ball hitting the green.

All in all I found the "walk the course" video fun, where taping
at a driving range helped correct problems. At the range we always
stood in the same location, camera angle constant. Later you could
draw on the TV with a dry erase marker set-up posture etc. , then
note the changes... things like that.

If you could capture the action of the round with commentary , and
good camera angles showing swing and results, add a little humor???

You get my twenty bucks. It would be worth the laughs later ;) !!

    	Give it a shot,

Great idea but don't sell yourself cheap. Round it off to a 100.00
smackers. I assume you are going to film a foursome. It would be fun
but it would also take up a entire day including editing.

Good luck Tom ya got to love it have fun

Interesting idea & a great way to do some initial market research. I had
thought of a similar idea for places like TPC - Sawgrass where they could
tape your four some on the last hole or two & merge it into some tape of
a tournament round. (You know WARFIELD is a two shots off the lead, coming
to 17, SPLASH, SPLASH, quadurple bogey, too bad McCumber goes on to win.)

My thoughts on video taping a round. I think there may be price sensitivity.
I think the best idea would be to target outings. If you could quickly edit
the tape for dinner, etc. I think that you could make more $ per hour. You're
talking about making $70-100 bucks for 5-6 hours. I bet you could make 200-300
bucks for slightly longer. (You would be especially productive at shotgun
tournaments).

You would have to work with courses to allow this. They would probably be
concerned with liability. More importantly you would have to persaude them
that you won't slow up play. That has a direct effect on their bottom line.

On our last vacation my wife video taped our group a couple times when we
played near our condo, & on the last hole. I guess we aren't tour caliber yet.
It seems whenever the camera went on the wheels came off. So my recommendation
is fixed price, cash in advance. If they don't like how they play, it's their
problem.

I think that you are underestimating your costs. The camera, so you have one
now, what if it breaks, the time spent drumming up business, etc.

Good luck, with your venture. I know I sound an MBA but really I'm not.

828.5non-player taping is a good ideaDINSCO::BURKEMuirfield MagicTue Dec 19 1989 15:379
I mentioned previously in another note that I have taped a few
rounds this summer while playing at Trull Brook. Playing and taping is not
easy. It is tough to keep your concentration on the game when you are
worrying about taping a round and slow play. So, after the first green we
had to abandon greenside action. Although we didn't have every shot we
were able to get Gary Wilson's career best on tape, a 72 at Trull Brook
with three birdies and an eagle on the back side!!
