826.0. "Phoenix golf in January-February" by FLYSQD::MONTVILLE () Wed Dec 06 1989 08:43

    I thought I'd post this early so we can get a jump on this.

    There are tentative plans to have a major training event in Phoenix
    in the early part of 1990 (January and February) for Digital.

    The group I work with wil have involvement with the hardware
    installation, support and so forth for this event. What I/we would
    like to find out about is-

    1. How are the course conditions at that time of year?

    2. Do the course (please list) rent clubs, etc.

    3. What is the weather at this time of year (dress requirements)?

    I am sure there will be several of us who would like to get a few
    rounds in while were out there for two weeks (or more). Any and
    all information about golf and the conditions would be greatly
    appreciated (since back here in Mass. it's been about 9-13 degrees
    with some snow cover-- so no real winter golf back here).

    Regards,

    It's been 15 years, but went to a "woods meeting" at the Camel Back
    Inn , and the weather was fine.( End of Dec begining of Jan)
    Outside of Phoenix. The clubs I rented were better than my own!

    Several golf courses around. But that was 15 years ago. I loved
    it.                            Ang

826.2Golfing in ArizonaOAXCEL::CALLERYWed Dec 13 1989 13:4216
    Hi Ang

      I played there last February and weather was great 75-85 degrees.
    I golfed at Camelback and McCormick Ranch which both have 2 18 hole
    golf courses. You will definitely need tee time. McCormick Ranch
    has Golf Packages if you stay with them. These two courses are
    in Scottsdale which is more expensive than some of the courses in
    Phoenix. In Phoenix I golfed at Cave Creek which is priced reasonable
    but pretty wide open.

      Golf Magazine has a list of Golf Courses in the Phoenix/Scottsdale
    area which you might want to locate along with telephone numbers.

    Hope this helps

826.3Can't wait....Oh yeh, gotta squeeze in some work time.DNEAST::STEVENS_JIMFri Dec 15 1989 13:0713
    I'll be there...

    Who is the President of the Phoenix Golf League, or is there one ?
    I think we should get together to discuss long range strategy of
    the Digital golf leagues. We can start on the first hole and possibly
    by the 36th hole we will have ironed out principles, goals and
    strategies..

    I believe the DECTECH show is February 12-24...I'll be there for one
    of those two weeks.....Watch out...

826.4NO LEAGUES HERE IN PHOENIXPNO::LATHAMMon Dec 18 1989 14:098
    At the present time there is no golf league, either in Phoenix
    Union Hills (PNO) or Tempe (TFO).
    If I can be of any help to anyone coming out for Dectech drop me a
    line.

826.5Welcome to Phoenix, Golfers!PNO::REICHELMon Dec 18 1989 15:5181
    Hello, folks, welcome to Phoenix! The land of 365 days of golf every
    year!

    - Course conditions will be prime in February!

    - The weather will be perfect during DECtech! You might need a
       sweater or light jacket, depending on how early or late in
       the day you play. But be sure to bring shorts, just in
       case in gets hot. (It can happen!)

    - The days will begin to lengthen out now and in February you
       just might be able to get in 9 after work at a nearby course.
       (Some courses have special twilight rates)

    - Two things to be aware of:
       1. Alot of "snow birds" (visitors) are here to play golf
           and tee times may be hard to get; there may be some waiting
           while on the course.
       2. Rates go up at this time of year.

    We have some courses fairly close by, some championship, some
    executive. It will depend on the time you have and your pocketbook.
    I will make it a point to get a guide of Phoenix golf courses and
    leave it at my desk, so while you are here you can check what is
    available and the costs.

    Please read Note 813

    Hey, what is DECtech about...?

    Can somebody from Phoenix enter a little info on the Arizona area
    for me...? Such as...

    Do most of the courses have their own driving ranges...?

    Are there many ranges that are not associated with courses?

    Is miniature golf big in the area?

    How much does property go for out there, say a parcel of about 20
    acres in an area of good visibility?

    Average cost of housing?

    An average cost of renting a house?

    Thanks for any info...

826.8Try some of the public coursesHKFINN::F_MCGOWANThu Dec 21 1989 18:4722
    I'm not from Phoenix, but spent some time out there a couple of
    winters ago, and got in a few rounds. Before I left the snow and
    cold, I asked someone I knew, who was from the area, about local
    public courses. They recommended Papago as the best in the area,
    not counting resort/private courses. I went there a couple of times
    but had no luck getting onto the course: it must be great, since
    there was such a long wait!

    I did find a good alternative, in Mesa: Dobson Ranch. Not too long
    a wait, reasonable prices, and a very nice course.

    As to driving ranges - they're *everywhere*! Also, keep in mind
    that the local Nevada Bob's has coupon specials every week (or at
    least did when I was there), so you should be able to stock up on
    new golf balls without blowing your budget completely.

    Also got to Tucson, and played a public course there: Randolph -
    36 holes, driving range, and, for a small premium, reserved tee
    times.

    Good place to stay: Royal Suites, at Cactus rd. and Black Canyon.
    Don't miss the visitor cupons package "Discover Arizona": you'll play
    in two and only one pays. Cost 20$ ( at Valley Nat. Bank ) and the
    first round you save 30-40 bucks. If you have enough time go to play at
    "Gold Canyon Course".

    The Phoenix open is on ESPN starting tomorrow.
    ESPN will be carring the coverage through the weekend.
    First time for television coverage.
    A friend just handed me corporate passes, from Xerox.
    Digital had a tent last year, but budget constraints
    have hit and there will not be a corporate presence
    this year.
