823.0. "No Golf Recession" by USEM::VOUTSELAS () Thu Nov 30 1989 16:11
For anyone interested, good article in BARRON'S Nov 13,1989
concerning the financial side of this wild game!
"Fore! Investors Eye Golf Courses"
Some "line item" types of information:
* 22 million now playing, 25% increase in last 2 years
* Foreign investors starting to buy and build
British
Korean
Japanese
in Hawaii,Clif,Texas,Florida
Japanese bought Rivera in LA
for $115 mil.
* Each course now gets 8 or 9 bids, instead of "hunting
down" buyers of a few years past
* Golf is a 20 BILLION dollar business now and growing.
* Need 100 18 hole courses annually to the year 2000
just to keep pace withinflux of new golfers.
* Arizona is in the best position to expand due to
abundance of land.
* Warning on fees going to 30 50 60 a round may deter
further growth.
* The country has 12,600 courses.
* The third boom period for golf course construction now
in in gear.
* Can be built for 3.5 to 4 million "for plain vanilla"
Up to 20-30 million for upscale type.
Designor fees are for top names: 1 to 1.5 million.
* American Golf Carpenter announced a series of one hour
workshops.Guess how many showed? 600!!!
* 40 to 55 age group , which is increasing , is mainly
responsible for the surge.

| Answer to .1
My guess is that it's like a "Goldsmith's" of Austin Texas
where they run a school to teach club repair. The article didn't
metion anything else, so I'm guessing, but I'd say a good guess.
Goldsmith, for $400 will teach you to repair all kinds of clubs.
In Austin , Texas.
