Is there a rule concerning balls lost under piles of leaves, which would otherwise being easily findable? At Stow south last Sunday I lost two balls in leaves. Now, when I hit a lousy shot, it may cost me two strokes; that's the game. But these were decent shots, and under non-Autumn conditions I would certainly find the ball and have a shot. In one case it was right on the tree line (12th hole) in my usual place, but I never found it under six inches of dry leaves. On 17 I hit slightly over the green. I've been there many times. In fact, I had my club in hand to play the next shot, but the ball was somewhere under piles of leaves. Losing those four strokes killed me. Any local rulings for this time of year?

I think what you are talking about is the famous "winter rules" provision of golf. You've seen pros clean and drop on fairways on TV if governed by winter rules. We play: if seen in the fairway ,drop no penalty. If off fairway, but seen , and agreed , play from rough or woods , no penalty. If "gone" and seen and agreed, normal penalty. On greens, remove anything in front of putt line. Can't sweep with putter or feet to remove dew or water. Clean and drop on any plugs. Angelo |
