794.1 | challenge update | HBO::BLAISDELL | The BB'S will reign as champs! | Thu Oct 12 1989 17:50 | 37 |
|
After one short afternoon we have 4 teams signed up already,
with 2 more teams forming as I type. I'll keep registration
open until October 27th. This tournament will be restricted to
10 teams (20 players).
Gene Kelley had an excellent suggestion. Instead of just one
trophy, why not two trophies so each member of the team gets to
keep it and show it off for a year. In that case, part of the
entrance fee will cover the cost of the 2nd trophy. Since the
trophies have to be purchased ahead of time, this is a "rain or
shine" event. I'll provide details on cost and method of payment
later, to all those that have signed up.
This event is open nonDEC players. However, Teams with at least
one DEC player will take precedence over teams that have signed up
that have no DECsters (is that a word?).
Here are the teams so far...
The BB's - Jeff Burke, Yours Truly
The Boston Brooms - Bill Fagerberg, Mike Gryglik
Salt & Pepper - Mike Longchamps, Tony Gomes
Salem Aces - Gene Kelley, Art Mansor
In my best _Lost In Space_ robot voice, WARNING, DANGER, WARNING,
This is a 18-hole scratch event and so far it looks like it will be
highly competitive. There are rumblings that there are teams forming
with some great players! The Ryder Cup was tame compared to what
this will be! The BB's are unwavering in their confidence, though.

The team of Cooper and Brunelle would be well advised not to enter
tournaments in which competent golfers are playing. How convenient
the tourny is in the East and Cooper and Brunelle are in California.
If Cooper and/or Brunelle read this note, they should screw up their
courage and contact me about setting up a little California

->#1<- The BB's - Jeff Burke, Rick Blaisdell (weekday)
2 The Boston Brooms - Bill Fagerberg, Mike Gryglik (weekend)
3 Salt & Pepper - Mike Longchamps, Tony Gomes (weekend)
4 Salem Aces - Gene Kelley, Art Mansor (weekday)
5 The Bombers - Peter Stopera, Bob Mook (weekday)
6 The Slashers - Keith Niskala, Garry Wheeler (weekday)
7 The Lemon-stirs - Walter Lenehen, Bob Keene (weekend)
8 The Chilliddippers - Rich O'Connor, Fran Merlone (weekend)
9 Nonames I - Paul Goguen, Steve Lacaire (weekday)
10 Nonames II - Joe Corrigan, ringer (weekday)
11 Nonames III - Larry Warfield, Mr.Good Drive (weekend)
Even though 11 teams(> preset limit) have already signed up, don't let
that stop you from forming a team and signing up yourselves. Something
will have to give regarding the weekend(5)/weekday(6) selection, and
some teams may not be able to compete. Plus, the 20 player limit isn't
a life or death thing. I'd consider taking 24 players. Thanks for
the terrific response so far. To quote Sally Field if she didn't win
that Oscar, "You hate me, you must really hate me!". ;^)
It looks like the BB's will definitely finish in the top 3!

I think the biggest act of intestinal fortitude is predicting a
win in a scramble in one note & asking for a cure for the yips in
another. Unless of course his partner putts like the old Tom
Watson. ;-) (Now who is psyching who out.)

Though I can't play in the tournament, I do have a suggestion for a
good course for a scramble. The Country Club of NH.
Ranked as a top public course by GD, designed by Donald Ross and some

the MA people, its about 1hr from Nashua.
Have a blast.

| We now have 15 teams signed up! I have to suspend registration
so that I can get a grasp on exactly how many players will be able
to make it. Has to be 20,24, etc. (multiple of 4).
Next week we will start looking for a top notch course and book
a date for during the week (result of majority rule). If playing
during the week is impossible for your team, let me know and I'll
take you off the list.
Thanks to those that have made suggestions regarding courses.
Sky Meadow will go on the list of courses to contact. The Country
Club of NH sounds like it may be too far away for the majority of
players, though. If anyone else should have a good contact or ideas
for great course, let me know, so we can add them to the list.
Marlboro CC is still 1st on the list as previously advertised. Jeff
has played it a couple of times but I've never had the pleasure. Is
that "neutral" enough for you folks that are worried about the BB's ?
And I'm absolutely certain that the BB's will finish in this
tournament!

794.37 | Some Tips for Marlboro CC | WALTA::LENEHAN | | Wed Oct 18 1989 13:35 | 88 |
| Marlboro CC - Greens can be very tough, when they are cut you MUST
be low of the hole. I've seen two foot downhillers
turn into eight foot uphillers.
- The rough can really hurt you. Missing the fairway
from the Blue tees and rolling into the rough can
make for a long day. Best advice- stay in the fairway.
Hole #1 Par 4 Water on right, but big tree on left
blocks approach shot. Need to be right
side of fairway. Uphill slight dog-leg
left to green. Downhill tee-shot.
Hole #2 Par 4 Long par 4... need tee shot to stay in
fairway. Bunkers on right, fairway leans
left. Tough Green. Stay low of hole.
Hole #3 Par 4 Easy hole. Straight-away , fairway leans
right. Start tee-shot out left side of
fairway and let it roll back to
center/right.
Hole #4 Par 4 Down Hill tee shot - Uphill approach. Hit
tee shot to flat spot of uphill.
Hole #5 Par 3 Down Hill tee shot, 230 yards from Blues.
Tough hole.
Hole #6 Par 4 Easy hole... Fairway leans left. Hit tee
shot right side of fairway, let it roll
back to center.
Hole #7 Par 3 Maybe 190 ish from Blues. Semi hidden
green.
Hole #8 Par 5 Reachable in two, Slight bend right. Aim
tee shot at Big tree in center of fairway.
If you go too much right you could forfiet
the chance of getting on in two, by putting
trees in play. Big fairway. Left side OB.
Hole #9 Par 4 Downhill blind tee shot. Water on right...
Uphill approach. Tee shot is tough, must
be left enough to avoid water, but not so
left that you enter woods. It's a slow
bending dog-leg right, so being too left
enters the woods or makes the approach
shot too far.
Hole #10 Par 4 DownHill tee shot , fairway leans left.
Wide open tee shot. Being left side of
fairway helps avoid bunkers when hitting
approach shot. PW/SW to green.
Hole #11 Par 5 Bang away. Creek in center of fairway is
300+ yards from Blue tees.
Hole #12 Par 3 Island Green 180 ish from Blues. Nice hole.
Hole #13 Par 5 Short Par 5 bends left. . Hit tee shot to
left/fairway. Don't go too left, trees will
block 2nd shot . Blind uphill 2nd shot, but
reachable. Run up and see where hole is.
Hole #14 Par 4 Woods on right slowly bend into fairway,
as fairway becomes downhill. Key here is to
start a little left and then use the
downhill to roll to level lie. Creek 40 ish
yards in front of green, crosses fairway.
Hole #15 Par 4 Easy hole. Dog leg left. Hit to fairway.
Hole #16 Par 4 Bang away, stay in fairway. Creek crosses
fairway but carryable with tee shot. Approach
shot is usually short, due to deceptive bunker
that is 30 ish yards short of green.
Believe yardage marker and factor in uphill
for approach shot. Swing away.
Hole #17 Par 4 OB to left. Creek is drivable, with a BIG
bang. Recommend 3w tee shot. Uphill
approach. Tough green. Stay low of hole.
Hole #18 Par 3 190 ish. All uphill. Green is well
bunkered. Get it there.

| Front nine is garbage, except for the 3's. back nine (especially
#12) is GREAT! Lots of placement needed on the tee ball for a good
option to the pin. You can knock it on #10, but it's not worth it,
and #17 may require a 2 iron tee shot to make sure you stay short
of the brook. Bring your "DQ" (flop shot) for the back 9...

794.39 | | TOOK::RASPUZZI | Michael Raspuzzi - LAT/VMS Engineering | Wed Oct 18 1989 17:23 | 28 |
| .37 has a good description of each hole but I disagree with #13.
13 is a par 5, slight dogleg left and is uphill on the second shot. Reachable
with a driver and a 4 iron. I would suggest keeping your tee shot right even
though that semi-flirts with the woods. If you hit it left near the bunker,
then you have an awkward, very uphill stance. The right side of the fairway
is flatter.
It's a very hilly course and holes 1,4,5,9,10,13,14,15 and 17 are holes where
you are trying to place your drives. Especially 4. There is a flat section
in the fairway about 130-150 yards from the green and you want to hit it.
Anywhere else will pretty much give you one heck of an uphill stance.
5 is 250 yard par 3 from the way backs but it is all downhill. Only place
I have ever seen a 1 iron check up.
I like Marlboro. The greens are nice. But again, as .37 says, they can be
real tough if you don't use a little smarts (tough to do from 150 yards away
when you can't see the hole).
Good luck to each team. Don't let Rick psyche you guys out. Although I have
played with him before and he rival Hack Nicklaus :-).
Mike
PS - Since this year was slightly disappointing for me, the clubs have gone
away for the winter and I am now waxing my skis. But there is always the
Myrtle Beach trip in the spring to get me psyched again...

794.40 | Some more commentary on MCC | CURIE::TDAVIS | | Thu Oct 19 1989 13:09 | 113 |
| Some corrections/differences-of-opinion with 37,38...
> Hole #6 Par 4 Easy hole... Fairway leans left. Hit tee
> shot right side of fairway, let it roll
> back to center.
It's not rated the third toughest on this side for no reason. IF you
hit your drive as he suggests, yes it's easy. But the fairway slopes
pretty severely left and if you draw the ball to the left side it will
likely keep rolling left into the woods and, perhaps out of bounds.
> Hole #7 Par 3 Maybe 190 ish from Blues. Semi hidden
> green.
Actually, its about 165 from the tips.
> Hole #8 Par 5 Reachable in two, Slight bend right. Aim
This guy IS a big hitter. Don't know more than 2 or 3 three guys at
the club that can get there regularly in two from the back tees--and
that is when the wind isn't against. Don't know why it plays that
long--it's only 535--but it does.
Hole #9 Par 4 Downhill blind tee shot. Water on right...
Uphill approach. Tee shot is tough, must
be left enough to avoid water, but not so
left that you enter woods. It's a slow
bending dog-leg right, so being too left
enters the woods or makes the approach
shot too far.
If you're playing the front tees--which is probably where you'll be
hitting from during the week--and you can rely on hitting your drive
240+ yards, you can blow it over the water. Back tees? Lay up with an
iron or 5-wood. Beware, the green looks fairly flat, but it slopes
sneakily to the front left. It's the toughest green on the course, in
my opinion. And one of the toughest hole. I beg to differ with Mr
Varley, despite his vast experience in playing the worlds top tracks.
This is the toughest hole on the front--and I'd never call it
"garbage."
> Hole #11 Par 5 Bang away. Creek in center of fairway is
> 300+ yards from Blue tees.
God! He's not only long, he's accurate! Don't "bang" it to the right
side, the creek is only about 260 from there--and gets closer the
further right you miss it. Is this the same guy who reaches 8 in two?
I use a 3-wood or 1-ron; you're not going to get home in two, so why
press?
Hole #12 Par 3 Island Green 180 ish from Blues. Nice hole.
Bob Goalby named it his favorite hole in golf. Even though he'd have
to be hitting his tee shot from Rt20 to make it 180 yards. 160 from
the tips is hard enough--and down-hill at that. Further proof that the
greatest holes aren't necessarily the longest
The remaining holes are as good as any five finishing holes you'll
play--at least among the no-name clubs that don't make it to the
100-greatest list.
Hole #14 Par 4 Woods on right slowly bend into fairway,
as fairway becomes downhill. Key here is to
start a little left and then use the
downhill to roll to level lie. Creek 40 ish
yards in front of green, crosses fairway.
Wind is ALWAYS in your teeth. So it usually plays a lot longer than
400 yards down hill.
Hole #15 Par 4 Easy hole. Dog leg left. Hit to fairway.
Might be easy for him, but it plays tough for me. That's because I
don't drive the ball as well, I suppose. Push it right and you're OB.
The fairway is WIDE, but for some reason this dogleg left drives me
bonkers. By the way, if you're not a head case, and you find your
drive nicely down the middle with less than 150 to the green, don't
get cocky. With the exception on a little plateau in the middle, the
green slopes severely back to front, and on the right hand side, to
the right as well. A TOUGH green to put if you're above or to the side
of the hole.
> Hole #16 Par 4 Bang away, stay in fairway. Creek crosses
> fairway but carryable with tee shot. Approach
> shot is usually short, due to deceptive bunker
> that is 30 ish yards short of green.
> Believe yardage marker and factor in uphill
> for approach shot. Swing away.
Jeezum, he IS long! "Usually" short approach? Don't be surprised if
you have a long iron or wood into the green. It's a 410 yard hole,
uphill part of the way. A good, long drive down the right side of the
fairway, near the perilous mound, will indeed leave you with
a 7 or 8 iron into the green. Good luck. Yes, there are deceptive
Ross-like bunkers well short of the green, but there's also a
catcher's-mitt, pot-bunker-deep bunker immediately in front.
Make sure you carry the green. This hole was rated one of the 18
toughest in New England at one time. Don't know if that's true
anymore.
No problem with the rest of his description.
Have fun. I hope the green are cut down, it makes for a better test.
But knowing our greenskeeper, chances are they'll be a might shaggy
midweek.

794.42 | Another humble opinion | TRADE::OGREN | | Thu Oct 19 1989 13:21 | 101 |
| The greens at MCC are very difficult - it is hard to visualize a straight
putt on any of the greens. And it is very difficult to get up and down.
The yardages are fairly short, but the hills and wind makes the course
play longer. I hope the tees are all the way back for you as that makes a
big difference. You do have to move the ball to reach the landing areas -
you may have shots that seem "unfair" if you do not put your tee ball in
right spot. The reward for a good drive is usually a short iron or wedge.
Overall, a previous reply was right on - stay in the fairway and stay
low of the hole! I've been a member there for 5 years so maybe this will
help. Have fun!
Eric
Front 9
-------
Definitely the weaker of the two sides, though 5, 6, 7, and 8 is a nice
stretch.
#1 If the tee is on top (by the putting green), then a 3 wood to the
right side is just right. Missing the fairway on either side may
leave you blocked out by trees. This green does not hold well so
don't charge any pin in back. Pretty good starting hole.
#2 This hole used to be a par 5. It has the most severe green on the course
with incredible breaks back to front and left to right. It is not uncommon
for down hill putts greater than 10 feet to roll to the fringe!
#3 Can't improve on previous description. What you see is what you get. But
be on the left side if you can.
#4 One of the holes where you must reach the landing area. If you must
miss the fairway miss left as trees block approaches from the right
(you'll see my divots behind the oak ;-). Warning - the green slopes
much more severely back to front than it looks. This green is quick!
#5 Yup. Trap on right is in a nice spot. Bail out right (like the rest of
us do) and you have to flip a wedge up and over.
#6 This is my favorite on the front with trees down left side of dogleg. Drive
up to plateau and have a nice view of the green. Drive to right side of
fairway, do not fly ball to the back of the green.
#7 More like 165-170. Tougher to get it to the hole as you must not go over
the green.
#8 Reachable in two with the tees up; not from way in back. This green
does not reliably hold an approach (so play for some roll). Usually
not worth cutting the corner, unless you really hit it big.
#9 Tough tee shot. If the tees are up a long iron makes sense (leaves you
short of the water). I use a fairway wood from the very back. Use the
crown of the white house as a target (and don't snap it ;-). Like #4
this is a deceptive green - everything breaks to the road.
Back 9
------
Nice layout here! Most holes have a bunker to help aim from the tee.
Positioning is a bit more subtle. Back tee placement makes a big difference
on 10, 13, 15, and 18.
#10 Neat little psychology hole (must birdie or par, but surprising easy
to bogey). Missing fairway right leaves a frightening downhill wedge
out of rough to a small target. Best to be left.
#11 The creek *is* reachable on the right for bigger hitters. Still must
hit drive well to reach flat spot for second shot. Best approach to
the green is from the right side. Avoid the mound, or risk structural
damage!
#12 Great hole at only 160 yards! Downhill to a well protected (almost island)
green.
#13 Fairway trap is reachable with from lower tee (hole plays *much* better
from upper tee). The green has a valley in it. Go for it in two if you
can handle a trouble shot (sand, rough) if you miss. Or hit a long iron
short of the green with a reasonable chance for up and down.
#14 Decision time from the tee! The flat at the base of the hill is reachable
with a big drive - if you avoid the narrowing woods you have a short iron
to the pin. Playing for the top of the hill is safer off the tee, but
leaves a tough mid-iron to the green.
#15 I always thought this was a tough hole. Aim to cut the dogleg as the hole
lengthens out if you go too wide. Tee shot all carry. Toughest green this
side - *must* stay below the hole (big time slope)!
#16 Plays longer than 410 due to hill and prevailing winds. Pound away!
#17 My favorite on the back. Slight dogleg right with OB on left. Fairway
slopes right into trees so best play is a fairway wood down left side
(the senior pros used 1 and 2 irons if that helps). Left side also gives
best angle to green.
#18 Long iron to a difficult green. Good test of short game nerves if match
is on the line here!

Tom , you can sign a team up now and you would be first alternates
in case another team can't make it. Participation was originally
limited to ten teams but due to the active interest in the event,
I expanded the number of teams to 16, and everyone who replied in
here or notified me by mail is now in the tournament. To book a
course, you have to let them know how many groups there will be.
It also keeps the tournament more manageable. Good or bad, those
were my reasons. You can sign up a team or have yourself as an
alternate in case a team loses one player. Let me know, although
you may have to give the rest of us strokes, since you are a member
at Marlboro!! ;^)

Hi Tom,
Thanks for the additional information, I knew my descriptions
would go through some ECO's. I wasn't sure of some of the
distances... But I really do play MCC the way I described and
didn't mean to misguide anyone. I do hit the ball long and
near where I'm aiming. It wasn't a good idea to explain my
hole by hole strategy without previously explaining what my
distances are... my goof ! So if you hit it long off the tee
.37 will be helpfull, otherwise the descriptions make the
holes easier than they should.

It's ashame I can't do them all on the same hole though,
However, even though I have a USGA 14 handicap index this year, my

Sorry, don't have a card with me, but I can give you an estimate,
based on 8 years of Saturdays missclubbing myself.
I'll give the yardages from the tees from which you'll be most likely
playing. Sorry to say, but the blues won't be all the way back--at
least if our greenskeeper, Glen Ackly, doesn't change his routine.
It's been a continuing battle between the membership and Glen: We want
to be able to play the whole course every time we play it; he wants to
"save" the back tees for weekend play. Since most transients choose to play
the whites anyway, I don't know why he bothers...The holes where it
really matters are: 1,4,8,9,13. The 5th, the long par three, the
members play from the middle tees (220), so he leaves them all the way
back for the midweek crowd.
In case you're curious, I've included, in parentheses, my estimated
yardage from the weekend tee position.
Hole Par Yardage
1 4 315 (355)
2 4 400 (445)
3 4 350 (370)
4 4 315 (335)
5 3 240 (220)
6 4 355 (375)
7 3 145 (165)
8 5 475 (525)
9 4 340 (385)
--- -----------
35 2935 (3175)
10 4 300 (320)
11 5 510 (520)
12 3 150 (160)
13 5 465 (485)
14 4 395 (410)
15 4 370 (380)
16 4 405 (415)
17 4 355 (370)
18 3 170 (185)
18 3 175 (185)
-- -----------
36 3145 (3245)
Remember, this is an estimate. It should be fairly close though.

| Clarification on directions to Marlboro CC
I was rereading the note, a few back, that gave directions, I believe the
directions given are not quite accurate. I will post a new set of
directions here. I was over at Marlboro CC yesterday (more on that later).
Off of Mass Pike (rte 90):
Take 495 North
Off of rte 290 or rte 2:
Take 495 South
-take exit(off of 495) for rte 20 East towards Marlboro Center
-basically stay on rte 20 all the way
some landmarks
*rte 20 bears right at a set of lights just before entering downtown
Marlboro
(the previous directions said go thru 3 sets of lights and then take a
right at your next set of lights. That is not correct. You go straight
thru 4 or maybe 5 lights before rte 20 takes a right at a set of
lights(after the downtown area). Rte 20 is clearly marked just stay on 20,
follow the signs.)
*after going around downtown you will see Dairy Queen on your right
*you will come to a set of lights at which rte 20 takes a right turn
(this is clearly marked)
*you will then pass a shopping plaza on your left and will come to a
set of lights at the bottom of the hill (go straight thru, stay on
20)
*just up the road rte 20 will bend to the right and there will be
alot of concrete median strips around. You want to take a left onto
Concord St (I believe). Easier than looking for the street sign,
which is hard to see here, take the left between the Royal Mandarin
restaurant and the Texaco Gas station.
-Just up the road you will see the club house on your left.
Note: This is about a 10 minute ride off of 495.

794.64 | Practice rounds(?) | MSHRMS::GOGUEN | | Wed Oct 25 1989 06:32 | 27 |
| Steve and I went over to Marlboro CC yesterday to play a practice
round. Well we almost did not get on the course. Here is what happened.
As we walked in the pro shop a gentleman asked us if we were playing
golf? Which we answered yes. The next question was are you members. The
answer was no. (at which point I'm thinking *oh-no*). He then preceded
to walk out the door to ask the pro if he is letting non-members on the
course today. The pro's answer was no. The pro walked into the pro shop
and told us that maybe next week they were going to start letting
non-members on during the week. I then told him we were really wanting
to play the course because we were in a tournament next week at the
course and wanted to get a feel for the layout. He asked what
tournament? I replied digital scramble. He then said "Just the 2 of
you." (at which point I'm thinking *oh-yes*) We replied yes, just the 2
of us. He then said that will be $11.00 each.
If anyone else is interested in playing the course, call first and tell
them "that you are playing in a tournament there and were wanting to play a
practice round. Is there a good time for us to play?" If you just show up,
as we did, you may not get on. They had their tournament schedule posted
outside the pro shop and it looked quite busy.
Also, the condition of the course was excellent, in my opion. I just
hope this weather holds thru next week.

| Hi ,
Tom Davis, 73 year old Fred and I made up a threesome and played
18 at MCC yesterday. Unbelievable conditions/weather! We all
had fun, everyone took a turn with some great shotmaking. The
greens were excellent and required positional approach shots
to avoid three putt leaves. After playing yesterday I was left
with the feeling, the team that best avoids three putting will
win. If the first puttee can die it close enough to guarantee
the par, that would be a big advantage. It's so easy to lose
strokes on the greens.
Tom knows the course extremely well from tee to green, his tips

Are there yardage markers on the course? If so, are they just
150s and are they accurate?
Who has the duties of packaging some of this weather and saving
it for next Thursday...? :-)
Thanks

Lone small pine or shrub at 150 yds. Yardages can be deceptive, good

Steve, does this mean the 150s are accurate but look different than 150
or that they are not accurate at all...?
Thanks again

Yes, I guess I should have said *apparent* distances can be deceptive.
Yardage markers are accurate and sometimes difficult to pick out.

Boy,
You guy's are taking out the serious plan of attack.
repl .77 "Gee, I think it's 155.6 yards to the front of the green
Albie... can you run up and pace off the steps to the flag for me"
repl Walt "Walt said you had to hit 280+ on the par 5 and keep right,
gee Albie... I belive I hit 266.85 I think I'm 55.3 to the 150 marker
Oh! Gosh ! better pace it off. Oh, do you think the flag is 62 or 67
steps from the front?"
Enjoy!

794.81 | small range | TOOK::RASPUZZI | Michael Raspuzzi - LAT/VMS Engineering | Sun Oct 29 1989 18:43 | 12 |
| Actually, MCC does have a driving range. However, I can only hit 3
clubs (8, 9 and PW). Their "driving range" is only about 150 yards
long.
The range is up on top of the hill behind the clubhouse. It might be
closed this time of year though.
The 150 yard markers might be "deceptive" because there are many
elevated greens. Don't forget to take the lay of the land into
account.

Amen! Earlier this summer I played in a member/guest there. On
the 18th hole I had a 6 foot putt from above the hole. I bearly
tapped it and ended up 12 feet past. After we finished I sat on
the veranda and watched 5 others try to make the same putt. I
kept it the closest of the lot!
Re: The discussion of 150 markers. In general there is so much
change in elevation on the course that the 150 markers are only
a slight help. You are generally adding/subtracting clubs based
upon the elevation. I think local knowledge is really required to
play the course well.
Enjoy your tournament. My prediction for the winners:
The team that can hit it long & straight off the tee, keeping it in
the short grass out of the dense rough, with the hot putter. ;-)

First of all, I'd like to thank Gene Kelley (for afterall, it was his
idea to begin with), Bill Fagerberg for running the para and for providing
the automobile for our closest to the pin, and to Dave Sullivan for organ-
izing the breakfast.
Now, time for me to eat crow. The BB's were awful. Considering how
well we were getting off the tee all day, we scored as high as it was
inhumanly possible. Other than coming up with a birdie on #2 (the
number 1 handicap hole), we did nothing. And as previously stated, the
four-putt on #7 (how can a two man team 4 putt?????) killed us. Both of us
felt numb for the rest of the round. You all were right, we were wrong.
But we will get you next year!!

I had a great time playing in the tourney...Although my
partner and I had a tough time in our first tournament.
We had the pleasure of playing with the BB's and we had
a good time. I must tell everyone about there birdie on #2.
Rick steps up to putt a 45-50 footer down the slope with a
huge left to right break and puts it right in the middle. My
partner and I were stunned, I was thinking at the time that
they would be lucky to 2 putt from where they were.
Thanks to Rick and Jeff for a great tournament!!!

Thanks to all for a great time. Wish I had brought my game along, but
someone had to work while you were all out practicing.......
We had the honor of playing in the same foursome with the
Lemon-Stirrers and got to see some real golf. Some of the better long
and mid iron play I've seen. They could have played better if they
had better playing partners!
BTW, who did win that beautiful red Testarossa??? I saw Walt put one
about 15 feet from the pin. There wasn't any marker on the green and
three foursomes behind us.
Tough competition, next year I plan to practice some......

I'm sure that was a great putt, but not the putt of the day I'm
afraid. My partner, Rolf Wandel hit a 1 iron on the long par 3
5th hole. It landed about three feet off of the right side. The pin
was about 15 feet off the left side. We estimated the putt to be
about 60 feet with a 15-20 foot break. I believe a few of you
heard the screams. BTW, Rolf did a pretty good imitation of Jack
himself on #16 at Augusta in '76, I believe, coaxing it in starting
from about 20 feet away. Great, great putt!!

| Aha, another team that birdied the 238 yard par 3 5th hole.
My partner Larry Hebert hit his 3 wood, pin high about 5 feet off
the left side of the green. After I chipped from 20 feet to about
1 foot, he bettered me by sinking his chip. Congrats to Rolf on
that putt, I know how LOOOOOOOOOONG it was....
Keith. Do we have another scramble lined up for next week?????

RE: 119,121
Joe, not to take ANYTHING away from Rolf's putt, but....
I did not see either of the putts made, but the one that was made on
the second hole would have to have been a MUCH harder putt, IMHO...!
I saw where Rick's shot was on the green and I would have been very
surprised if they made it in two (but one..!). We had a four footer
from above the hole on the second hole and had a tough time getting
it to stop 2 feet from the hole...

Thanks for all the nice comments about the tourney. Glad you
all had a good time.
Forgot to mention that Wayne Gordon won the sports car with
a great shot on the the 12th hole (island green). He was no
more than 5 feet away. His team ended up with a 3 on that hole
though???? What happened Bassmaster?
Some points about next year.... I could be persuaded to run
the Challenge Cup again next year if my partner is up for it
as well. Those that played in it this year, are automatically
in it next year (if they wish). Maybe we could get more teams
to sign up and go for a shotgun start. It will be held during
the week again and it will probably be at a different course
(for variety). Marlboro was a tremendous course and the folks
there were very hospitable. Top notch all the way! I'd like
to see it scheduled a week or two earlier in the season. New
England weather in November is just too risky. That's it for
now. See you folks again next year I hope!

| Congratulations to the winners--a great round.
I'm glad you guys got good weather and that you seemed to enjoy the
course. Sorry about all those leaves, though. Our greenskeeper has
his faults, but keeping the course clear of leaves isn't one of them.
Because of all the rain, it's been a rough fall for blowing leaves,
I guess.
I showed up in the hope that one of you fanatics would no-show. No
dice. Very disappointing. Fortunately, I did get a game with our
assistant pro and a couple of other members, so all was not lost.
We teed off just ahead of your first foursome. Boy, you had a long
day! With all the time spent sweeping through the leaves looking for
balls, we had an uncharacteristically slow round--about 4.5 hours. But
by the third hole we had a whole hole open between us and your
leaders. By the time we finished they were THREE holes behind!
Any, sorry I missed it. Hope I have better luck next year.
Rick--
Does APPLYING to get into the tournament this year automatically
assure me a spot in next year's event?

I had a request to provide detail of how we did hole by hole.
So here ya go. The toughest holes? Easily #2 and #18, although
I'd like to put a vote in for #7 8^( . The easiest? #8, #10
and #13 all came in under par. Course, I thought #2 was pretty
easy! 8^) See you next year.

I mentioned in the registry topic #863 that I wanted to set up
a Woman's division for the Challenge Cup this year. The tournament
last year was open to all last year, but perhaps some people felt
intimidated by who was playing and felt it wasn't for them. Haven't
worked out the details yet, but there will be at least two more
trophies for the new division. A mininum participation (3-4 teams)
would be required. Again, all the details aren't worked out, I just
wanted to get all the comments about this revelation out of the
registry topic and into this one where it belongs. Comment away!!

| hi rick,
My opinion would be to have a women's flight, and also 2 men's flights,
the first flight (championship flight) would allow anyone who wanted to
play in it, the second flight would allow only team with total team
handicaps of say 30 or over for usga card carrying members and say 26
or over for league handicappiers for example. anyone else have any
suguestions on how to make 2 flights, one problem i could see is that a
5 plays with a 25 in the second flight, i think that's a stronger team
then two 15's.

Mr. O'Connor,
Yes, the BB's had a terrible outing last year. This year I expect
to be able to help my partner much more than last. Rick and I are also
very much looking forward to meeting you and your partner in the Challenge
Cup '90 event.
Let the challenges begin!!
