785.1 | BOTH GOLF AND GD | DUGGAN::DIAZ | MAKE THEM EASY | Mon Oct 09 1989 14:15 | 13 |
| Re: <<< Note 785.0 by ENGINE::PIEL >>>
To avoid deciding, I subscribe to both GOLF and GOLF DIGEST. $12 or
$13 for a year is less than a single round, so it's not a big
decision, and during the off season is always good to have something
to read.
Both magazines have a good group of pro's as editors. I like the
GOLF section on low, straight, power and high handicappers tips.
Until recently GD was the only one with discount chain ads, but I see
now Nevada Bob's is also puting ads in GOLF.

785.2 | Reading about golf is a hobby of mine... | DINSCO::BURKE | Corporate DINS | Mon Oct 09 1989 15:30 | 26 |
| I currently have subscriptions to Golf, Golf Digest and Golf Illustrated. My
favorite is Golf Illustrated for two reasons: I like the Hank Haney
instructional tips and the section where top teaching professionals are
interviewed at length on their teaching philosophies.
I saw a copy of Golf World magazine recently which supposedly covers the
"international" golf scene. I'm probably going to look into getting a
subscription. Does anyone know about this magazine?
Reading about golf has become my winter hobby. Each winter I review all of
my golf magazines just to keep in-touch with the game. I also have a fair
amount of books, instructional videos, vintage championship rounds on tape,
as well as tapes of a few rounds I've played this year. Watching some of
the past championships can be fun -- I have all of the '86-89 Masters, US
Open Championships (missing '88 -- I was there and forgot to set the VCR)
and PGA Championships. I really want to get a copy of the Bobby Jones
Sybervision series badly.
Gee, for all the effort you'd think I'm a single digit handicapper, and I
am far from it. I have been focusing on reading and watching videos.
However, they don't give any feedback on how well you are doing. Next
spring, added to my ritual of reading all the golf information I can find,
I plan on taking some lessons for sure.

| Currently I subscribe to GD, but I buy GOLF in the airports
occasionally. I'm going to try flip-flopping for a while.
I honestly don't have a preference. GOLF's "private lessons"
feature is nice... GD usually has more pages.

785.4 | Golf World Mag. | AKOV11::GWILSON | | Tue Oct 10 1989 14:48 | 24 |
| re: 2
I currently subscribe to Golf World and that is the only golf mag.
I get. Golf World offers good feature articles covering the PGA tour,
LPGA tour, and the Seniors tour. Also full length articles on Amateur
titles are covered after the respective event. Many times I don't get
to watch t.v. tournaments, so this is my way of keeping up with winners
and losers with some highlights from each round.
As far as World events coverage, generally 1/2 a page is it and
that includes the 1st - 10th place finishers with money won.
No lessons are offered (to confuse you) but actual pictures of
golfers swings (8 - 10 frames covering 2 pages) with text high-or-low
lighting hands, feet and weight shifts. These are normally in every
issue.
Basically its quick to read, gives me the PGA tour stats, and I
know something about each tournament to offer to my playing partners
during league play.

| I have subscriptions to GOLF and Golf Illustrated and also get
copies of GD from a friend. Have been reading GD for about 3
years and the other 2 for a year. After a lot of thought I have
decided to renew my Golf Illustrated subscription but drop GOLF.
I really like the Hank Haney articles in GI and the fact that
they cater to the "blue collar golfer" and I feel that GOLF is
just to snobby and full of advertisements to waste my time on
anymore. GD is pretty good but lately have really started to
load up on the multi-page ads that we all love so much. I usually
spend the first 30 minutes with a GD or GOLF just removing all of
the fliers and subscription forms, etc. Since I get GD for free
I will probably keep reading it and just bitch about all the ads
and filler junk.

785.6 | Golf Journal | CSOA1::CARLOTTI | I hate when golf season ends :-( | Sun Oct 15 1989 17:16 | 12 |
| If you're really into golf, you'll love the Golf Journal that's put out
monthly to members of the USGA Associates Program. It's not very thick
(20-30 pages) and contains no instruction, but it's full of wonderful
stories and antedotes as well as articles about all of the USGA sponsored
events. I highly recommend it to lovers of golf.
To join at the associate level costs around $25/year which entitles you to
a bag tag, a copy of the Rules of Golf, a year's subscription to Golf
Journal and probably some other stuff I'm forgetting. Your money
ultimately helps benefit the USGA to preserve the game we all love!

Note 1013.0 Collusion between GOLF & GOLF DIGEST? No replies
DICKNS::F_MCGOWAN "Zoot who?" 14 lines 11-JUL-1990 07:23
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Both GOLF and GOLF DIGEST arrived in the mail the same day, a couple of
days ago, an unusual enough event in itself; but what really struck me
was the theme of their cover stories, which got me wondering if the two
editors are secret golf buddies: GOLF's cover says "You Can' Slice From
Here," with a photo of Greg Norman's position at the top of his back-
swing; while GOLF DIGESTS says "How To Play With Your Slice"!
It almost looks like one editor said "okay, we'll try to teach 'em how
to cure their banana ball, but if they can't, why don't you guys help
'em learn to live with it?"
[Dear Mr. Moderator - Yes, the golf magazine topic is 785, but there's been
no action there since last October...]

785.8 | Get up and down for dough !!! | RAYBOK::COOPER | MAD HACKER | Thu Jul 12 1990 15:54 | 13 |
| I was reading my new GOLF magazine kast night and they had some
intresting statistics concerning the top 10 money winners from
last year versus the middle 10 money winners (61-70 on the list)
besides a average difference of about $630,000 each, the top ten
players were much better at getting up and down than the middle ten.
Their driving distance was almost the same, putts per hole were
almost the same, but there was a major swing in sand saves. The
suggesstion was Drive and putt for show, get up and down for dough !!!
The top ten players were also better by about 3 percent in greens
in regulation.

785.9 | ph # for GD? | AIMHI::LOWNEY | public links junkie | Mon Dec 20 1993 10:31 | 12 |

Would anyone happen to have the phone number for Golf Digest? I've
tried information at the Des Moines Iowa mailing address with no
luck, my guess is they are part of a much larger publishing
company.
thanx
