747.0. "Tips for Brentwood in NH?" by BOLT::FITZPATRICK (Today my jurisdiction ends here.) Fri Sep 01 1989 14:46

    Howdy,

I'm going to be playing at Brentwood, in NH, on Sunday. I'll be
playing with my girlfriend's dad and brother, so I'd like to look good.
Since I've never played the course before, I was hoping someone might
be able to describe the holes to me, and maybe give me a few tips on
how to play them (ie, stay to the right of the 1st tee or whatever).

    Thanks,
    -Tom

747.3the "NEW" BrentwoodMAMIE::PORTERGUILTY OF FELONIOUS MOPERYTue Sep 05 1989 10:1520

Brentwood has always been one of my favorite courses - fun to play
and a good challenge. I went there Sunday with a friend to find
that the course has opened a new nine and the old front is a separate
nine hole course. The 'new' eighteen consists of the old 10,11 and
12 followed by combinations of old and new and finishing with the old
16, 17 and 18. The new greens were very slow, not deep, but wide -
twice we had puts that you had to take through the fringe - really
tremendous contours. I'm still in shock. The course always was
tough, but now I would defy a pro to take this one from the tigers.

If your ego can stand a hit, go play this new monster. Bring an extra
towel to dry the tears. The course measures about 7000 yards from
the back tees, and there isn't a level lie within two miles. Plenty
of sand and water just to make your day. I got covered up in one
bunker, but they dug me out and made me continue.

	Still shivering - Stan

Excuse the dumb question, but where in NH is Brentwood, sounds like a
    good challenging long course.

A little nit, the name is Brettwood, and it is in Keene, and yes I
agree, it is a nice course, even if the new holes are still a little
young (grass on fairways has not fully cover them, greens are in
reasonable shape), but the layout is very challenging. In a couple
of years, it should be in great shape.

BTW, the town is also worth visiting.

I beleive that the course that is being talked about is Bretwood
not Brentwood and it is in Keene, NH - southwest part of the state...

Did I miss something? With the new holes at Bretwood, did they
take other holes out of play? If so, which ones???

The original front 9 is now a separate 9. I liked those holes much
better than the new 9, particularly #2 and #3 (elevated tee and
green). I suppose the new 9 will be much nicer in a couple of years.
The new island hole is beautiful though. Very short.

As people have said, the course has apparently changed quite a bit
recently, so the hints I got didn't really apply. It's a real nice
course though. I managed to hit a 101 (low score for the day, although
my girlfriend's dad managed to win most of the money which was probably
    just as well 8-) ).
It was one of those days where, if I knew the course, I definitely
would have played better, since I got myself into trouble a couple of
times. The fourth hole is a dogleg right with a pond at the "elbow"
and a stream running along the outside. After a duffed drive, I hit my
lay-up shot too far into the stream. The fifth hole is a par 5 dogleg
right uphill. I hit a perfect tee shot that made it around the corner
about 200 yds from the green. It sure looked like I could make the
green in two, and I hit the 5-wood (see node name 8-) ) of my life that
I would have bet was going to make it. I didn't know there was a trap
in front of the green. I caught my sand shot a little too well and
went over the green, giving myself a downhill lie with a valley between
my ball and the green. The pitch didn't quite make the green, and 3
putts later, I had myself a double bogey.
If I had any kind of a short game, it would have been a great day.
I guess that's what practice is for. I did manage to par the tenth
hole though. And if anyone wants some tips on how to play the carom
off the Snack Shack on the approach to the 9th green, just let me know.
After pulling my tee shot left, I hit a non-fade around the big tree,
bounced off the Snack Shack, and was sitting 4-5 feet off the green.
Of course, it took me 3 to get down from there (mostly because I was
    laughing so hard).
All in all, it was a good day. Once they get the fairways in shape
it'll be well worth the drive to play there.

I played the course for the first time a couple weeks back in our
leagues field day. I was hungover and depressed when they made us
put our cooler of beer back in the car :-( ......

The greens were lightning fast and the most of the cups were on
slopes, if you missed, forget it ! 8-O ......

I four putted at least 4 greens and 3 putted most of the others !
Even with that I shot a 90 ! An idea of the kind of day I had...
The 6th hole is about a 350-375 dogleg left with water on left...
I drove the green, was on the fringe about 35 ft. from the pin !
    you guessed it 3 putts ! :-\

The 7th hole is rediculous ! a zig-zag par 5 to a very elavated green

all in all not a bad course .
