719.0. "2nd Annual Fall Noters' Tourney--See 719.19 for details" by CALLME::MR_TOPAZ () Tue Aug 15 1989 11:53

This year's Fall Noters' Tournament will be held on Friday,
September 15th. The site will be named soon, but we've got
to know how many people are interested. We expect to play
in the northern Mass/southern NH area, no more than an hour's
drive from the Maynard, Marlboro, Nashua, and Salem areas.

As with last year, the format for the fall tournament will be a
scramble, so all golfers, high handicap and low, will have a fair
chance of copping the top prizes. The tournament is especially
for contributers and readers of GOLF.NOTE, but it is also open
       to any Digital employee.

Reply to this note or send me mail if you _will_ play. The
tournament entry fee will be approximately $25.

Send mail or reply now! And watch this note for further
       information.

This year's tournament will be held at Amherst CC, Amherst NH, on
Friday, Sept. 15th; tee times begin at 11am. Registration fee is
$24, which includes greens fees. (Power carts are available at
       $10/player.)

As was the case last year, the tournament will be a scramble
format, and lots of prizes will be awarded.

Only 24 places are available in the tournament. To register for
the tournament, you must send a check (checks ONLY, please) for
$24, either to my office mailstop (listed below) or to my home
address (send electronic mail and I'll send it to you). If you are
among the first 24 people to send me a check, you're in. If you
send a check and you cannot be accommodated in the tournament,
your check will be returned to you.

When you send your check, please also send me your handicap
(either from a league or your home club), or, if you don't have an
official handicap, your typical score this season. Last year's
tournament was a lot of fun -- hope to see you this year.

The field of 28 players is set for Friday's tournament.

The early betting line has made the team of Rick Blaisdell, Mike
Raspuzzi, Joel McGrath, and Sandy Taylor the overwhelming
favorites. Blaisdell and Raspuzzi are both said to play far
better than their reported handicaps (12), and dark and vicious
rumors have begun to surface about payoffs to the tournament
       organizers.

Other favorites are Gary Wilson's team -- his team walked off with
top honors last year, and Gary seems to be at the top of his form.
(Except, of course, for his recent match with the aforementioned
Mr Blasidell.) It's also hard to discount the chances of teams
with players coming from afar (is Connecticut's John Ziomek going
to shoot out the lights out?), as well as the family teams such as
the Kelleys (Mr & Mrs) and a strange team that includes two Mr
Topazes (father and son). Stay tuned.

heat and humidity affected him on the back nine.

That must have been a neat trick since 34 + 41 = 75. :-) See you all Friday,
I'll be wearing my knickers. I wish I was playing better this year but my last
round in the 70's was in May (79 the day before my wedding). I wonder if being
married has anything to do with it... (no, that's another note :-)).

To set the record straight, it was a 35 on the front. And Mike,
Jeff Burke is going to get a big kick out of reading that you are
going to wear knickers. He keeps threatening to wear them to psyche
me out on the course. We just went from "overwhelming favorites"

       Mike --

Amherst used to have a practice area (BYOB), but it seemed to be
closed last time I played there. However, there is a driving
range (apparently not associated with Amherst CC) about 1/4-mile
beyond the golf course, on Rt 122.

719.29Tournament reportCALLME::MR_TOPAZMon Sep 18 1989 09:1626
Thanks to all who played in the tournament on Friday, and
congratulations to the winners. The weather forecasters took a
beating: the day started with some clouds, but the sun came out in
early afternoon and it was an ideal golf day.

Best score by far was the group of Ramon Rodriguez, Wayne
Newberry, Mike Gryglik, and Jim Marlow, with a score of 32-34-66.
Second-place went to the foursome of Gary Wilson, Dave O'Brien,
Ray Pothier, and Mimi Struck, who had 3 bridies in a nine-hole
score of 34. Mary Donahue, in the final foursome of the day, hit
a wonderful shot to the 18th for closest to the pin, and Ron
Anderson took the prize for 2nd-closest.

Gene Kelley has pointed out that more than half of the players
haven't written any notes in the conference -- come on, introduce
       yourselves!

       Regards to all,

       --Mr Topaz

P.S.: A final word about no-shows: 3 teams had to play short-
handed because of golfers who had signed up and then didn't show
up. That's too bad -- the teams playing short-handed were playing
with an unfair disadvantage, and the players who stayed home
       missed a good time.

Congratulations to Ramon's team. A 66 was a tremendous score
on Friday. Thank you Mr. Topaz for organizing and running the
tournament. Once again you did a tremendous job and everyone
seemed to have a great time!

The report on the "overwhelming favorites" was not good. We
were one of the teams that only had 3 players. Ah, that's not
too good when you are going up against 4 person teams. We
finished at even par 72, well off the pace. However, I had
a great time. Mike Raspuzzi (resplendantly clad in blue knickers)
and Sandy Taylor (very consistent play) were fun teammates.
       Can't wait for next year!

I agree with Rick in .-1. I had a good time and I wish I could have stayed
a little bit longer after we finished to see some of the later finishes.

When our team birdied the first 2 holes, I thought we would not miss the 4th
player. Then along came the back nine...

Thanks to Mr Topaz for organizing this event. I'm looking forward to next
year (spring and fall).

Don, another well done and thanks.

In keeping with the old adage, it never rains on the golf course,
it really came true in spite of how bad it looked almost up until
the first tee time. We never got a single drop of rain. The sun
came out, and the company was great.
It was a pleasure playing with Mike and Ron. It was a shame we
only had three players also. I am looking forward to next year
    already.

    One more "Thank you" Don.

Our team, made by the Kelleys, Jeff Burke and myself, managed to
finish the first 9 one under, and thought we had a chance, but in the
back nine, in two ocassions, the four of us could put together even a
half shot and had to scramble a lot, so we ended one over for the
    back, even for the round.

But the company and the weather were great. Then six of us finished
the day having a good meal on the way back to Massachusetts.

Looking forward for the next tourney

As with last year my team and I had a great time at the
second annual noters tourney. My team really felt playing from the
blue and white tee markers made the course quite long so I feel the
first team score (-6) was very impressive. My team really fought back
being 1 over after 10 holes to finish -2 for 18 holes.

    Don,

You did a great job arranging the Fall Noters' Classic. I can't wait
for the Spring Classic. Amherst CC is really a nice course to play and
will attempt to play it in the future. I couldn't believe that the
starter was able to tell us that we completed the front nine in 2:06
and the back nine in 2:22! I really enjoyed meeting some new people,
including those who don't actively participate in the Notesfile.

I would like to congratulate my teammates, Jim Marlow, Wayne Newberry,
and our captain, Ramon Rodriguez, for their contributions to the superb
TEAM effort that allowed us to finish first. Someone always came
through with the big drive, second shot, pitch, chip, putt, etc. that
set up the team's scoring opportunities. It was great, guys!
