668.0. "FRENCH OPEN" by CHEFS::NEWPORTP () Mon Jul 03 1989 14:35

I thought the regular noters would find it interesting to
keep up to date on progress of the European Tour. So below
I have provided a few details of the French Open played at
    Chantilly over the weekend.

Again it was Nick Faldo's tournament. He was several shots
back at the halfway point on level par at 140. However a
third round of 64 put him just two shots behind Ronan
Rafferty. In the final round Rafferty slipped back with two
double-bogeys back to back on 10 and 11. Faldo bunkered his
approach at the last but got up and down in two from under
the lip for another birdie and a round of 69.

    Final scores as follows:

    N. Faldo (GB) 273 70,70,64,69

    B. Langer (WG) 274 70,67,71,66
    H. Baiocchi (SA) 274 69,67,68,70
    M. Roe (GB) 274 69,68,67,70

    P. Parkin (GB) 275
    I. Woosnam (GB) 275
    M. Harwood (AUS) 275
    M. James (GB) 275
                        .
                        .
                        .
    S. Ballesteros 277
    R. Rafferty 277

Incidentally, this is Nick's fourth straight win on the European
Tour, following wins in the PGA Championship, The British Masters
and the Volvo Masters in 1988.

Looks like Rafferty is now certain of a Ryder Cup place as is Mark
James. Mark Roe is also going well and could come into the
    reckoning.

    Phil.
