| It's been a while since I lived there, but the Avon/Simsbury area
had a slew of great public courses. Simsbury Farms had 2 courses,
also east of the river had its share of courses. Down closer to
Middletown was a Robert Trent Jones course.
If someone can reply I would be interested in knowing if a course
called Bel Compo located in Avon is still open. They were adding
a second nine when I moved in '78. Excellent shape for a muni and
a great layout.

| I have quite a few friends in the Hartford and Farmington area,
and have played around there quite a bit. Here goes.....
**** Bel Compo -- Avon, Route 4 exit 39 (38?) off 84. Follow Rte. 4
to Rte 10 towards Avon, the course is down about 5 miles or so.
Played there Saturday. Nice course with a good variety of holes,
Pretty good layout, lots of water, and I always bring my suntan
lotion because my ball's constantly in the beach there (sandtraps).
$20 for 18.
**** Stanley CC. New Britain. Exit 40.
3 9's. My order of preference is the White course, the Blue course
then the Red's (the Red course is very hilly, lots of uphill approach
shots.)
**** Rockledge CC. West Hartford. Exit 41 or 40.
My favorite of the 3. Usually a little easier to play here than
the above two. Very wide open so you can really let 'em fly here.
Shot my best round, an 84, there last year.
I believe it was $18 for 18 holes
**** Tunxis Plantation CC. I believe this is in Farmington, not
sure.
3 9's here also. Very nice course, I would highly suggest it.
One of the 9's gets very wet on the back 3 holes and is often not
open if you get a lot of rain.
Overall, I'd rate them Tunxis, Rockledge, Bel Compo and Stanley.
I'm a bit dissapointed with Bel Compo and won't play there again
for a while because it took us 6 1/2 hours, that's right, 6 1/2
hours to play 18 holes Saturday. Very frustrating.
They're all in excellant shape, too. For the amount of play Stanely
and Rockledge get, they are in amazingly good shape.
Have fun,
Mark
